I'm going to try this out tomorrow

here you go:
v2.79
added: Custom overlay
- start from ( settings> overlay ). It loads your own custom overlay from the root directory of the sdcard ( sdcard/overlay.png ). Once activated the touchscreen will not work, and histogram will be "frozen" until you deactivate it ( reminder: Ev+Ev/Ok to start the menu for nx500/nx1)
note that the preview of the playback will not work, however press "ok" for the video playback to start, and the recorded video with the overlay on top will show.
you can make any overlay you like, as 720x480 transparent PNG (replace the overlay.png with it)Amazing. Thank you so much.

when using this camera I typically use the grid lines for 2.35:1 aspect ratio crop. Problem is the lines are really thin and dont stand out as much as I'd like. Is it possible make the grid lines actually do the full black bar overlay while recording and keep the overlay on during playback?

So has the hack development ended?

I guess the right question is, if NX glass can be adapted to anything else. Eventually, there will be a demand for adapting NX lenses to other cameras, as the people that own such lenses are more than the people that own such lenses and care for the FF look; but that is another thread/story.
there will never be a demand for NX lenses to be adapted to other systems. there wasn't even enough demand for the camera for Samsung to continue making the NX1. also the NX lenses are made for crop sensor cameras. there is no expanded field of view to achieve.

Can we get some chart tests with this focal reducer? Sharpness across all parts of the frame need to be accounted for. Also what about lens coating? Does this flare in direct light? Can you try it with wider and longer lenses. I know the Metabones lenses have their focal length limits in particular with the Sony e mount adapters.

What profile are you using now in filmconvert?

So has everyone stopped shooting with GammaDR?

There is no real hard limit to the bitrate of HEVC. Yes there is a maximum rate specified for each "level" of the standard, but that has nothing to do with the actual codec. What it really means is that all compatible HEVC decoders need to be able to decode at least 160mbit/s to meet the level 5.1 standard. That way any video that meets those specifications will play on any compliant decoder. It's a completely arbitrary number. No sane HEVC encoder cares about that part of the standard. It will happily spit out bits as fast as its algorithm and clock rate can keep up. The actual limit for a given piece of hardware or software depends on many things, but it almost certainly isn't exactly 160mbit/s. I hope that makes sense.
I get that but is a higher bitrate the only answer for eliminating macroblocking? Pardon my ignorance on this. Could something along the lines of creating a real log profile for the camera be more beneficial to the overall image quality?

not saying anything is wrong with it, I haven't tested it yet. I was saying I hope we can get the hacked bitrate high enough to totally get rid of the macroblocking in the deep shadows
I thought it was said that 160 was the max for HEVC

Hmmm you guys could be right about the downscaling of the sensor and screen you are viewing the footage on can attribute to the oversharpening look.
Any improvement in image quality with the bit rate hacks ? Hoping we can get the h.265 codec bitrate high enough to at least eliminate macroblocking. I can settle for that for sure
what's wrong with the quality of the bitrate hack?
-
could the be an adverse effect to turning off the sharpening. Like why would the not make 0 an absolute 0?
-
could the following be used on the NX1?
From here: http://x265.readthedocs.org/en/default/cli.html
--nr-intra <integer>, --nr-inter <integer>
Noise reduction - an adaptive deadzone applied after DCT (subtracting from DCT coefficients), before quantization. It does no pixel-level filtering, doesn’t cross DCT block boundaries, has no overlap, The higher the strength value parameter, the more aggressively it will reduce noise.
Enabling noise reduction will make outputs diverge between different numbers of frame threads. Outputs will be deterministic but the outputs of -F2 will no longer match the outputs of -F3, etc.
Values: any value in range of 0 to 2000. Default 0 (disabled).

I didn't mean overclocking. I just meant getting 100fps at 160 bitrate instead of scaling back for 120fps. Seems like fair compromise to maintain the highest quality.
-
Since 120fps doesn't play nice with the bitrate hack has anyone tried PAL 100fps? I feel like that should work without issue since the hack brings the 120fps recordings down to 106fps.

Useful (I hope) for both NX1 and NX500 users: http://***URL removed***/forums/post/57583300
Awesome. Keep up the good work.

Is MJPEG encoding still on the table?

Minor update, still doing what Im doing, still digging and documenting what changes Im finding in the firmware, have started to explore with telnet and the camera. Its looking good. Have a few ideas on how it utilizes firmware updates but nothing solid yet. But I like how both stages are progressing. Although i wish I had more to show haha but dumping c isnt going to have a point! I should have a major update in a few days though!

Yeah I was using them and they only perform optimally stopped down (on the nx1 body). I loved the aesthetic but the optics is designed for film. Since then I've got the zeiss milvus lenses and they are ridiculously sharp and contrasty. Think the nx1 is optimized for lenses built for digital sensors. Its a gift and a curse because my nikkors and canon fd's were fine on the gh4 and a7s
Can you post a sample?

Nx1 gives some of the best image in the market. The ergonomics was a big win for me. The sensor IS picky with lenses though, that may cost you some extra $$
How so? You can use Nikon AI glass and get sharp images.
Panasonic seems to be announcing something "BIG" on December 15

So no one is considering it could be a big firmware update?
