Sounds like it'll sit between the A7C and FX3.

Probably the A7C form factor but no EVF?

Not expecting a mechanical shutter. I reckon they will go all electronic like Sigma Fp and FX30.

Would prefer if they give it a similar body and ergonomics to FX3 and FX30, but it being more a ZV range vlogging camera I expect it to be more of a rebadged A7C with the A7S III sensor.

That will be. Still amazing that they will offer the A7sIII sensor..

There is a crazy rumor also

    "A7sIV will be announced in Q3/Q4 2023

6k sensor that offers raw video and oversampled 4k video with no crops

The highest dynamic range ever on any alpha camera"

Well, after having to put up with a family obsession with the show for years, they would likely have to pay me a significant part of the budget difference to force me to sit through a full side by side comparison but, yeah, on a brief look you can see there is more lustre for want of a better word on the movie version.

Still can't see the justification in the extent of the multiplication factor though but I know zero about the nitty gritty of making movies or, indeed, the cost of walkie talkies 🙂

Example: they had to "disappear" the wolfs on many episodes because they didn't have the budget, and they had to make such decisions in most episodes..

The last seasons were so terrible though, even double the budget wouldn't help them deliver anything decent.

What do we learn from this?

the story is king! And a good story can be found really cheap, while digital direwolves are always expensive!

I think Canon have been forced to up their game on the standard models due to the Sony A7 III and A7 IV which has been eating their dinner.

EOS R7 is a kind of 7D, a rare APS-C camera that comes along every so often and does everything quite well. I still think the Fuji X-H2 is outright better in terms of spec but it was unthinkable a few years ago to have oversampled 7K -> 4K 10bit C-LOG 3 on a £1350 Canon body.

They have finally caught up with the 2014 Samsung NX1! (Just joking)

I feel exactly the same! Still holding on my NX cameras of course!

Ergonomically NX1 is still unbeatable (see you get rid of yours..what a pity!)

I will cover an international food exhibition for a client, and I consider taking with me the NX500+45mm+12-24mm+another pancake, even maybe the fisheye for some weird angles..

Usually with Canon, is slightly better than what the specs suggested though..

Street photographers. Many like to be stealthy. I (actually the wife) used to have a pink Fuji. Bought a $10 black rubber case for it, then felt much more comfortable with it, taking close-up candid street photos.

I wouldn't pay $500 extra but I would pay a bit more for black. Some street photographers are wealthier, or willing to spend more e.g. Leica owners.

You remind me the Z5fd I bought a thousand years ago in glorious Raspberry Red !! Technically wasn't pink, but I heard it a few times from my mates 🤣

Bought because it was something like 20% less that the other ones! Couldn't care less..was so small that wasn't even noticable when I was taking pictures.

Funny thing, still got it (and the 6500fd bridge, both in perfect condition) and gave them to my kids to try some old school photography before everything being consumed by A.I!

  5. I haven't used it as extensively as @herein2020has but I agree in most.

Pricewise is almost a no brainer and the best value camera Canon has offered for a long time now..

I personally do not like the wheel around the joystick thingy but on the other hand I LOVE the little dial in right/front/down that switches A/M that can be adjusted with the pinky!

Noise level isn't on par with the best of this generation but I usually do not shoot in caves, still I would like a tiny little improvement on that level even if the camera was less megapixels (but still a bit more than 24..28mgpxls would be ideal and a good compromise for me).

I am not sure about the files also, but I haven't done much editing to know for sure (still using BMP4K as my main camera, or working in projects that they provide the cameras).

I would like to do a project using  only the R7, but I haven't found the opportunity just yet, so my pro experience with it is somehow limited.

The 4K situation is not perfect either..and I am not sure in the scorching hot Greek summer the camera will handle the heat as well as my NX1s do..I had a warking overheating once with minimal use which wasn't what I wanted to see.

All in all, I would like to see an R7C of some shorts for around 2.000€ that would be a much better solution for video orientated hybrid fixing most of these issues and maybe more codec options.

The cheap prime RFs are good, there are NO RF-S options, the cheap zooms are garbage, worst kit lenses for a long time, can't believe they released those out in 2023(!) but my trusted nano EF-S with the PZ thingy and the Meike vND adapter is a good run and gun compromise (I still would like a lens starting from 15mm, because I usually want wider, and Canon is X1.6, so 18mm is not wide enough at all, and even 16-17 is somewhat limited. That is just a personal preference I have..)

The lens situation is nowhere near my NX one, so I keep all 4 NX cameras still, which is..not perfect!

  6. 2 things. BBC still didn't cover the issue and the public made it clear that it won't pass like yesterday's news.

In Greece in the tiny railway network we have (one of the smallest and most expensive in Europe) we had a train collision with 60 dead and many injured (young university students most of them, very bright they seemed) and that is the result of decades of public and social corruption (the man was in charged of the line, was put there a month ago at 59 years of age from the ruling party, he became "eligible" in a few weeks of training! even though they had spend hundreds of millions, still the line didn't have any warning system! And many illegalities between the state train company and the Italian buyer of the line, and the state totally absent for all these years, with no regulation at all).

The press, except only a couple totally indie media and a few communist and anarchist tiny press  outlets, tried to cover up because there were the national elections to be held, near the commemoration of the dead, and Greece is a very conservative and religious country, so they were afraid they are going to loose votes. First they are talking about "unlucky events and the bad moment", like you need the mercy of God to work a train! and trying with character murder to put all the blame to the one person, the one they put there, which the poor person was a farmer originally, but with political connections (rousfeti, they are called, the word came from the Ottoman era and means the political favor..) he became from a farmer, a railway porter and then a station master!

Still, I see the reaction in U.K, some protests in Greece, and the big ones in Israel, and I hope not all is lost..I can only be moderately optimistic at the moment.

For me shooting narrative projects a solid 20-85 cinema lens would be amazing. 20 is just wide enough to cover most wide angle needs on S35 and 85 is long enough to cover most shots on that end.

The Panasonic 20-60mm is a great cheap kit lens, maybe best in business right now (in very cheap kit lenses!).

The XF 16-120mm f4 almost made me go Fuji recently..

I use the 18-135mm EF-S in my R7 that I used to use on C100 cameras for run and gun situations, it is convenient with vND adapter..

    The CN-E 18-80mm is interesting..

My workhorse in NX was the 16-50mm 2-2.8f..

Now that I decided going RF (still debating if that was the right move..) I want something like the NX lens, but 4f would be enough for me for run and gun..I value weight and size more now that I am not 28years old (I am not even 29 anymore!), Because the long end is "cheap", I would LOVE an 15-70, let's say, PZ maybe, 4f. That would be good for shitters too, ehm..I mean KreAtorZ! So they can market it alright for most people..

Canon is X1.6 crop..loosing something even in the conversion..why Canon?!!!

X1.5 is cheaper and more convenient than gaining 1 mm at the wide end of a lens!!!

  8. My first mirrorless was around 2013, the NX300. I wanted to use creatively the collection of all my legacy lenses (M42/FD), the brown faux leather Samsung enchanted me completely!

Had so much fun doing one lens field trips..

The gig economy is the future economy.  As a freelancer my whole life I ironically find it kinda sad, actually.  It's yet another corporate race to the bottom.

Sad but true..after 23 years in the business, we are too tired to compete again for the bottom!

I have these conversations all the time the last couple of years.

The energy and time to "educate" the customer is so tiring right now, and usually they have a photo or video on their phone which is good enough for them and their social media "campaign", or after a couple of meetings and a half a dozen phone calls everything concludes "just do some drone shots"!

    No, thank you..

  10. It amazes me that when people are talking about phone photography usually it goes like this "iphone"..

Aren't other phones worthy of consideration?

Last year a director friend spend more than 2.000€ on iPhone and accessories..guess what..a big disappointment..known issues he didn't know and a lot lesser quality than advertised.

By the way, he bought the Fuji after, and now is completely hooked in Apple, buying everything with an Apple on it, still complaining about most things!

I thought I'd let everyone know that Panasonic did send me a SanDisk 1tb SSD and gave me 400 euros off the 1579 Euro Black Friday price. It's one of the best deals I've ever received for a new camera with those features. I'm super happy with the GH6 and its unique features. It really goes to show that pays to jump on those Panasonic Black Friday deals as some people were not as lucky as me.

Can you elaborate on this?! Do not remember the case.

  12. Firmware updates give better value to a camera and more confidence to a brand.

I much better prefer that move right now (even though I do not own the camera.).

Usually we need a better version of what we have, not a completely new camera.

  13. They have to do an "upgrade" of sorts..they GH5 cameras they have now are really beaten. I noticed the sound thingy that goes to the hot shoe had issues with at least 2 of their cameras, and the skin of the cameras have peeled of, and some of it sticks..

I never heard them do anything in "slowmotion", all the times I have worked there we shot 25 frames and in bigger jobs and/or movies they rent anyway. Also, they do not care about AF.

They believe the natural progression is the  GH6, but I thought the GH5mkII is good enough for whatever they usually do, or, if they want to up their game to move to S5XmkII but the investment for 4 cameras, lenses and accessories are pretty significant and a no go..

Is the image of the GH6 really that better? Quite honestly I do not see that.

Any comment about the ISO performance, of the GH6 vs the GH5?

  14. Sometimes I work for a production company that have 4-5 GH5 cameras and all the accessories and lenses, e.t.c

Recently they asked me for advice to move with the GH6, but I am considering to suggest the GH5mkII instead.

Does it make any sense or I am just being silly?!

  15. I went the P4K+the Olympus way..just put a great eponymous NPF adapter on the Tilta cage and run only internal media.

With a couple of those I can run all day..

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1420284-REG/idx_system_technology_sl_f50_l_series_batteries_high.html

And I got some adapters too of course..

    The 6K is mostly a 6K camera..

There is a huge minus though..to my knowledge, there is no internal software corrections on the various lenses, and that shows a lot on almost ALL of them (especially cheap photographic ones). The 12-100mm f4 Olympus is almost unusable wide (for me, others don't even care/or notice, but the difference is quite apparent and huge, to be honest).

The 6K Pro obviously has the new screen and NDs, and a quite bigger price..

  16. "From a pure lab test perspective, it seems that there is no gain without pain: the new LUMIX S5 II has nice new features including solid autofocus, but unfortunately in the lab, it falls a bit behind the previous generation, the S5 – when pushed to the absolute extreme, to keep things in perspective.

Not only is the rolling shutter worse (1ms more in full frame, 1.8ms more in APS-C), also the latitude result is not as good – it finishes with 7 stops of exposure latitude, mainly because of banding artifacts in the shadows and a more blotchy noise pattern which doesn’t look as pleasing to the eye.

That said, the dynamic range results are very similar to the previous generation LUMIX S5."

I would expect exactly the opposite, slight improvements on those numbers..hm..

  17. I could "defend" the latest RF camera releases all day long, the exclusivity and the general RF situation is quite terrible though...but..what drives the whole scene are the unlimited EF lenses in existence..they play the role of the "cheaper other"..I have at least a dozen EF (and -S) lenses home, without even owning a Canon until recently!

I did a research on some Tamrons that interest me, there is always a mention of lacking in AF speed, and why to adapt to a completely different manufacturer when I see differences between native RF and adapted EF to RF..even loosing another small percentage throws me back a few years in time of AF evolution, and that is the main thing, right? I mean, I have a BM Pocket, it has almost everything, in the old school sense, it is all about the AF in this new playground I believe..

  18. It was always something about this company...I have myriads of stuff, even expensive things I don't need, but NOTHING from Atomos..I didn't like the way they moved in the industry (same with Red, I was never a fun, although I did work with some of their cameras).

I hope we don't see anything similar to Black Magic, because I believed in those guys! I have BM products (expensive ones) still on their boxes!

Companies offering raw through Atomos products was really weird also..why only through them? And what sinister meetings took place and shape things??!! No, I don't give them my money, I was always well treated by SmallHD and BM..

Lol.. like I said I'm not leaving Canon, just not rushing towards any purchase atm.

I'm already on Sony FS7 for most pro work so its really only logical to get the FX30. My speed booster, accessories & lenses will carry over.

That said I completely forgot about the R7C rumour! That could actually be a pretty cool camera if priced like the FX30.

I am joking ofcourse! Whatever works, and whatever brings the dough!

Sony completely dominated the market with the FS7 and now there are a lot of FX cameras replacing the FS ones..we even did a feature film with one of the expensive FX ones last year and the camera performed as expected (FS7 had issues sporadically with overheating and/or media, I am talking ofcourse about very hard core TV productions, always on for 10-12 hours and cameras that have worked like these for years and years..).

The lens situation is really one to consider, I am too very disappointed with the close system Canon tries to impose to us, especially with the non existent RF-S system, and the lackluster and extremely expensive RF one..Even Tamron seems to offer some great glass of recently that I would like to be able to buy.

The response to that is the RF 24-50mm and 4.5-6.3f??

Panasonid did the very interesting 20-60mm with 3.5-5.6f, I can work with that..4-5.6f are my usual apertures (old school filmography!), and 20 is better than 24mm (going wider on a zoom is always a good thing!) and 60mm is better for portraiture that 50mm, slightly but still it costs nothing on the final price of the lens.

The Tamron 20-40mm 2.8f interests me a lot also..you are loosing the high end for portraiture but you are gaining a nice 2.8f..

Anyway, I am fine for now with my EF and the RF selection, but still I am using my NX cameras because of some unique lenses, and some m43 too..it isn't ideal, not been able to go full on on a system, and I think maybe E is the only way to go right now..

Increrible if you think about it..when mirrorless started, the Sony had serious limits on their lenses line up, and right now it is their biggest advantage! Way to go Sony..

They were also very lucky with Canon sleeping for a good part of the previous decade and Samsung's old boss died before seeing his pet project become part of the big 3, as he wished..

Yeah I know, I just sold my R6 last month to a Brazilian who had travelled to Europe just to shop. He explained the whole import situation to me. Not limited to cameras too if I understood him correctly.

Anyways, I'm getting an FX30 for my pro video needs. a bit more expensive than R7 but a lot better video options and codecs. I actually considered the R7 for a second but lack of RF-S glass is a no go for me. Can't invest in a crop sensor with no native glass support. And with third party RF lenses banned it's even less tempting to go that route.

Might still grab an R8 for FF needs (mainly stills) as I'm still invested in Canon system although a used R6 will cost you the same and might still be a better purchase considering you get IBIS & full battery. Yes the camera overheats but only on certain long recording conditions.

Traitor! The lens situation is really bad with RF-S..it wasn't even good with EF-S, I recently wrote how much better was the NX system for lenses and especially me..

There is a rumor about a videocentric R7 though..
