  1. I am sure listening!

At last, a real low segment/work horse/real camera. For run and gun and low budget pro work we need real cameras, no photo hybrids or good ideas, very bad executed (Pocket).

I am waiting for the first reviews, and a new Canon C100markIII announcement, what it lacks is the best of both words (dual pixel AF + variable ND), but overall a great proposal.

Panasonic is out of this equation right now, I hope that will change really soon.

BM seems to listen, and are serious. Maybe at one point a completely BMD workflow will be possible!

  2. @zerocool22 You must be joking, right?! Apples to donkeys comparison..

@Tim Sewell Is the 55-250 that good for C100? I have used the 18-135 and I am using a series of L zooms, but they are heavy (even for or especially with, Sachtler L) , they crop a lot, and did I mentioned how big and heavy they are? I would seriously prefer having 3 APS-C ones. What APS-C ultra wide zoom could anyone suggest?

The main problem is the f stop of these cheap lenses though, it is good to use 2.8 or stepped down to 4f with L lenses, but DPAF speed is very important too (but f stops are more important!).

  3. @joema maybe Adobe pushed by the VR and 360 movement, to support H265 than any other reason.

What is the question though? Why FCPX do not support H265 yet? or if people are using H265?

Seriously, there is no reason for FC not to support it, as we have proved, there is a plethora of devices and uses for it,

Pinnacle Studio edits H265 for 49.95$, Power Director 53.99$, Aiseesoft Ultimate 9 for 31.50$, and I am sure there will be others too.

So a 31.5$ editor from a tiny software company can do, and one of the most profitable multi nationals can't. Interesting view of things...

  4. @tugela Ofcourse not, even cheap security CCTV cameras from Aliexpress (40$), DJI in consumer products and 360 cameras use H265. Apple 6 for Facetime, Google Andoid 5 and above, Qualcomm, Media Tek, Intel, Samsung, nVidia, AMD.

*313 million HEVC mobile handshets in 2015, 1.5 billions estimated by 2020.

Add to all this UHD streaming content in the near future and you get the point.

  5. Good try and lovely lady and dog.

If I may, you should have done a few more shooting for cutting the interview (e.g film something from a shelter, a bit more play with the dog), and the interview it could be happen somewhere else, than a car (it didn't help the sound either, and didn't play any significant role in the story, you should ask yourself "why this" and "why that" when you do a documentary, decisions mean something usually). Usually try to be in the same level of what you shot (e.g kids, animals) I know it is a small dog, but maybe you should have gone down to the ground for it!

Of course "criticizing" is easier than creating, so take everything I say with a pinch of salt, but is good to hear from people outside the production.

What disadvantages 1DX has versus a mobile phone?!

  6. I am editing more than color correcting, and Premiere is still much better than Resolve and their lumetri and other tricks are enough for my workflow.

For more serious tasks I outsource the coloring procedures to more experienced colorists or DPs that do that.

I recently tried to work a bit with the Resolve, but after a couple of decades with Premiere and Final Cut, I am a bit slow with other editing suits.

I am sure it will evolve more and maybe soon it could be equal or better to Premiere, after so many years Premiere hasn't even peaked yet, and that is a shame, Resolve can reach them soon-ish.

If you are more comfortable with Resolve, then use that (if what you need is in the free version), the most important thing is to be comfortable with your tools.

  7. This isn't exactly "recently" in our world, it is old news actually, imagine people are already preparing to declare 10bit video recording the absolute minimum even for cheap cameras, because GH5 will be out in a few months, Premiere support of H265 is a reality for a long time now. I personally transcode only when I give footage to FC editors.

As I already said, all the hardware that is coming for the past year and onwards supports H265. Ofcourse Apple doesn't care, they are perfectly fine to sell to normal people, not a few specialized freaks that demand more and more, for less and less!

  8. @mercer

I am Nikon friendly as possible, don't take me wrong! My best photo experiences lately are with Nikon dSLRs, I am just criticizing the lack of innovation so late in the game. They should produce a high end mirrorless, last year, when there were the NX to Nikon rumors, the marvelous tech of Samsung and the color science and photo experience (and lenses) of Nikon sounded like one of the most exciting things in the industry since the actual dSLRs. That never happened, even though I believe it was a win win situation for both of them.

I do not know what article you are referring to, as the link you post has these exact words

"Here is the first set of rumored specifications for the Nikon D7300 DSLR camera:

20MP sensor (same sensor from the D500)

    4K video

    51 points AF

    SnapBridge

I do not have an exact announcement date yet."

These are ALL the words, I googled it, and couldn't find any other information, if you can share a different link, please do.

So, from the 4 things, mentioned in the rumor, noone is really exciting -and here is the NX comment, again - have been done equally, and probably better, by a discontinued camera of 2014. I am brand agnostic, and for that, I can't fail to spot the amazing value NX equipment since have in this market.

Wireless capabilities maybe aren't your cup of tea, but for more and more people some wireless features are expected, it is the 21st century after all, and Nikon pushes it so much since the D500 announcement, that isn't only my imagination, Nikon DOES make it a big deal, even though they have failed to deliver.

I understand your enthusiasm for anything Nikon, but I can't stop feeling sad for moves that do not push the actual value of the company forward.

All I was hoping was a NXF1 mirrorless, Samsung futuristic tech and Nikon's photo wisdom of a century!

  9. H265 is heavily supported from whatever hardware component is been produced since at least last year, be it mobile phone SOC, graphic card, cpu etc

Even my cheap Samsung TVs decode it natively.

It isn't anything questionable about it, it is just the present for most, and the future for all (together with the competitive codec).

It is made by the SAME consortium that did the H264 codec, to replace it, not compete against it, even the primitive H265 codec of NX cameras (2014) are producing some very nice (and small) files, especially with the up-ed hacked bitrate.

It is just the adoption level is slower, and the financial crisis had something to do with it, as companies lost a lot of money this last decade, so didn't have so much money to invest for specialized items (white appliances and home electronics are much more profitable and mass marketed and consumed than video cameras. 10 years ago everyone were made cheap digital video cameras and every family owned and used at least one, now only a few manufacturers, and a lot less famillies!).

New techonologies (especially 4K mobile recording, VR and 360 video) will make the H265 a necessity, the tech market just slowed down quite a bit, but I see them going up again, especially with markets such China and India consume video as much as they can (90% of them still using their mobile phones, but even a small percentage of these countries is a market bigger than South America/Africa/Oceania/Middle east put together!).

  10. It seems we are going to see some announcements this first semester, GH5 is pushing the envelope I believe, especially for video optimized cameras. Good!

On a somehow unrelated fact, I just realized that a local e-shop offers the JVC LS300 for 3000euros (including VAT), I like to see competitive tools been around 3000, I thing a new (much more improved) pocket could be even cheaper and set new costing lows for maximum quality.

  11. Seriously?! So the only new thing someone has to hope is for SnapBridge to work? and then you are telling me about NX cameras, when their wireless capabilities can't even be touched by Nikon almost a decade later...

"20MP sensor (same sensor from the D500)

    4K video

    51 points AF

    SnapBridge"

"Aldo  Lukasz • a day ago

    but for 200 more get a d500? (used,gray,refurbished)"

    Reply

"manattan  Aldo • a day ago

Exactly. Plus you get pro controls, a flip screen, QC mode, etc. Hence why the D500 makes more sense unless you need the built in flash"

and on another note " The Nikon D7200 uses Multi-CAM 3500 II DX 51-Point AF Sensor."

*20MP sensor will be, again, the lowest in APS-C land

*4K video, certainly it will be croped, and everyone and their mothers offer 4K these days, no big news here

*51 points AF, so what?! Do not even comment on that

*Snapbridge, just because it has a name, it doesn't make it different than what it is, and last time I checked on iTunes store it has 1.5 stars, and 2.3 stars on Android apps. How many applications have you downloaded that are 1.5 and 2.3 stars? I, none.

I fail to be excited about this announcement but of course everything new is welcomed, I would be more excited about a bigger than 1" mirrorless, with truly great video offerings.

  12. @Miklos Nemeth Isn't a little bit too much to imply that everyone HAS to use A7rII or A7Sii, or "A6500 has excellent quite usable no hunting video AF"?

Some people could call that "camera fascism" and definitely it doesn't match this poly(multi)-selective forum.

I prefer APS-C/super 35, I believe MOST people are perfectly fine with it for both, photos and videos.

Only if you own a lot of Sony stocks I can understand this behavior, but people do not care about your stocks portfolio and they are mature and independent to make their own decisions (and it seems that are buying more m43 cameras and lenses, look at Olympus/Panasonic/Yi/DJI/Blackmagic/JVC LS300 etc), thanks God (or science) for that.

  13. I didn't mean that ALL the photos would be pulled from video files, I still have my analog equipment, nothing stops me from shoot film or super 8 cartridges (well, for the second, cost is a reason!). When I generalize (in general..) I mean the "masses", which is a more vague term than the people frequent this forum. Already people do that from their 4K footage, and our cameras have in built applications that do that.

I read that Japanese TV wants to broadcast 20K image in the Tokyo Olympics (they broadcasted 8K in specialized booths in the previous ones), I can imagine all the iPhone crowd choosing their best poses out of a few seconds of 20K images, I can see dedicated apps "choosing the best out of ALL your incredible moments" and the rest.

  14. 12-24 is incredible light and small (for a UWZ, it is), but I mentioned the 10mm fish eye NX, which is one of the best kept secrets of NX land, easily one of my favorite lenses, ever.

You would expect something like this. Have you seen this NX fisheye? https://www.camerastuffreview.com/samsung-lensreview/test-samsung-10mm-fisheye it is extremely small and 72 grams. There are some links and videos online as well. It is also has a fantastic minimum focus distance, check this http://erphotoreview.com/wordpress/?p=4930

  15. I am just editing right now a paid job that will pay some bills with those NX cameras. Until Nikon has a better mirrorless, no, "I am not giving it a rest".

All the rest of your philology isn't relevant to anything really, because I have those for some years and I am still doing my job and hobby, while for all the Nikon's 100 years, there isn't one camera that I can do the same. Deny a reality doesn't make it a non-reality, it makes you live in denial.

Lack of video capabilities do not help being competitive in 2017 where billion of minutes are been uploaded every day. In the near future people will be choosing their "photos" from their videos.

  16. @nooneI have some incredible super 8 cameras, the latest super 8 ever made (Minolta), a do-it-all Bauer with Schneider lens, a Canon 814, a Yashica (the simplest, and one of my most favorite ones, shot some nice Kodachrome with this one). I believe I have a Vienette somewhere too, but never used that one.

I recently tested the Bauer and the Minolta and are working, I still have some film. I am thinking of shooting and developing that, but it is kind of expensive to do just for fun, but there are options in Europe.

  17. D500 was way overpriced for what it was (1) a B camera to the big Nikons, or 2) A camera for bird-ers), I do not think that ,except Mercer and 1) and 2), anyone else was interested in this camera and the crop is unbelievable it isn't a slight x1.1 crop, it is a X2.25 crop and no DCI 4K on a 20mgpxls sensor (smallest in APS-C land). Samsung camera does full sensor read out since 2014 on a 28mgpxls sensor and it's (I think) slightly less cropped NX500 costed 600euros kit new back then.

Fuji did the video leap in just one generation, I can't understand why Nikon do not go all in in video, they do not even have any other cameras to protect on video features!

  18. How Steven Spielberg and NX1 came into the same sentence, I do not know!

I give you a clue though, in "ms peregrine's home for peculiar children", there is an NX1, and they comment of how amazing the camera is(!),

also in Luke Cage Tv series in the police department!

P.S I do not think that Steven knows anything about Samsung cameras!

  19. Oscars, a few of them at least, and a lot of money, to the millions, per project, that is success. You can start from Cannes and Sundance though, it is good to have a somehow "indie" or "alternative European" background. But money, lots of them, and Oscars, at least a few of them. Oh, and share instagram jokes with Justin Bieber and Lebron James. And money.

  20. GH4 was groundbreaking back in the day, GH5 will be tomorrow, definitely a workhorse camera with no overheating problems, good ergonomics, amazing battery life (for a mirrorless), great and various workflow options.

I was just waiting for a better APS-C back then (NX1), and I am sure a better S35 (or close to that) will appear soon enough.

Ideally, even though I haven't own a Canon camera since the film days, I would like this time next year to own a C100markIII and a Canon M (just add a number) with good video capabilities as a B camera, carry around photo camera, etc.

I am getting boring, I know - sorry for that, but I can't stress enough how important is for my professional life a C100, but in 2017 I can't invest on a non 4K camera. Last year in the production company I work we invested on a JVC LS300, and even now I am trying to avoid that, in favor of the C100markII! Obviously a C300markII would be better, but it is out of our budget (and market) range.

Sony is nearing though, they aren't out of the question yet, just haven't been impressive so far (I mean, overall - all around - impressive, because the spec sheets are), but their next cameras (FSx, AxS) have to be great, but I am not so sure, I am more confident than Panasonic will deliver, they always deliver, just should have put that variably sensor of the LS300 on the GH5, jack of all trades, master of some!!

P.S don't take me wrong, JVC is a great all around performer but it is closer to old viceo camcorders (and not only in the form factor) than a Canon C camera, which in my opinion, they have completely nailed the design and ergonomics. Also the JVC slow motion is extremely cropped, so no use, we usually go with my NX1, or rent a FS700 cheaply with Zeiss lenses that we own for that.
