  1. You’ve come a long way in a short time - asking how to direct films on a zero budget to looking at C700s! But, as above, if you need low light filming the original A7S remains your best bet.
  2. Agreed... for some purposes. But if the intention is to view on a phone or iPad type device in a casual and fun environment then, yes, the quality is absolutely there. I had mine on the snow earlier this year - initially I thought it was dreadful and was going to bin it. But my wife thought it was fabulous and watched the fun rather than the banding, dubious stitching (at times) and any number of other limitations (features?). The ability to let your audience reframe is astounding and produces a genuine immersive experience. I think it’s used by Sky Brown (who must be the coolest person in the world) in her BBC sport video.
  3. Insta360 One X if the idea is to make fun and very entertaining holiday films. Put the app on an iPad, load the footage and play with the 360 look around. Immersive, interactive and a great deal of fun to be had. And use the app on the Mac (and presumably PC) to edit into a “film”. It’s the future! Plus her phone.
  4. Insta360 one x. (Well done for marching)
  5. There’s still hope... We need the French to veto an extension. Then it’s simple: no deal or revoke A50. And surely... It all rather changes the meaning of the word “may” doesn’t it. But we digress.
  6. And if you completed Myst you have my absolute and total respect... Some of the “escape room” type games are similar in that they invent impossibly difficult mechanical puzzles whilst retaining that feeling of playing in reality. I suppose Zach achieved this in his short - the impossible talking sock but grounded in a real world scenario.
  7. Wow... been playing with the Rode AI1 (into GarageBand) and it is superb! At least for my modest purposes. Voices sound like voices. Which is a definite advantage for voice-over work. Easy to use. Solid. I’m not suggesting that it is any better than any of the aforementioned alternatives (because I have no way of knowing) but the suggestion of a USB mic got the ball rolling, the AI1 is what I’ve ended up with and by golly I’m happy! It looks slightly ridiculous (ie pretentious) but that’s fun too...
  8. Managed to get a Rode AI-1 kit to play with. After reading the recommendations for a USB mic (which makes a lot of sense) I looked around and liked the look of it especially since I can use the mic with its XLR (plus adapter) on the P4k too if required. Might also get an XLR lav to use with the AI USB. Thanks for comments.
  9. How did you just so happen to stumble across that may one enquire? Buy two and it would rival RED’s Hydrogen for an immersive experience.
  10. Hi, I’ve done a series of work-related videos showing various laboratory procedures. I need to do voice overs to add commentary. Originally I planned to record sound as I filmed but this seems to have been the preferred option (and I agree). I’ve tried a Tascam dr05 (built-in mics & a lav I found lying around) but not happy (albeit a lot of that is probably bad technique on my part). Any ideas for the optimum set up? I was thinking of a Rode NT1A mic (but I’m not sure why) plus something along the lines of a Zoom F4. Keeping the cost in 3 figures. I have a P4k so also vaguely wondered whether the Rode (using the phantom xlr adapted to mini) would enable a good sound track? Or a better mic for the Tascam? It’s just a series of short sentences (so any background noise is a nuisance because the bits between the voice over segments are totally silent - although I could add in some ambient laboratory sounds I suppose). Thanks.
  11. Creative and fun! As said above - how would you critique it? Both from the creative and technical side.
  12. I look like that and all I do is watch my screen. And deceive myself.
  13. In modern Scots idiom “braw” means good or attractive as in “it’s a braw day” or “you’re braw looking”... the latter might need to be used with care however (or you’ll be greeted with a 12bit uncompressed “Glasgow kiss”). Not, I hasten to add, that it’s my own preferred variation of the Queen’s English. Playing with the settings after I upgraded reminded me just how superb the BM user interface and menu system is.
  14. Debating whether I dare post a picture taken with my iPhone of the Hydrogen controlling the P4k on h4vuser... it might incur the wrath of the faithful few.
  15. Once I figured out how to get Bluetooth to connect it works seamlessly. Superb. Now I need to get a cheap zoom/AF lens to play with. Highlight of the forum for a very long time.
  16. After you have delivered the Sock Puppet short to Kye’s desk... I want a three minute short called “My Town” posted here by next weekend. You don’t need a set or actors or a planned story - it’s all happening out there. Be a director and tell us your story about your town. You decide how to edit and cut - fast paced or slow. Day or night? Handheld or tripod? Get music from Eric’s site soundimage.org. Improvise. Create. Direct. Think of this not as some stupid suggestion on an Internet forum (which it obviously is) but as a commission - your first - so try to show off your talent. Who knows if you do it, someone might take notice and the first career building brick might slip into place.
  17. I suppose the easy answer is simply to start directing. You mentioned that within your local community there is no passion for filmmaking. So identify what are the local passions and exploit those by making a film relevant to local interests and concerns. Find a local business with an Instagram account and offer to do a film for them (limit of 60 seconds so it’ll focus the mind). And do it again. Reputation grows slowly - your experience and skill set more rapidly. The people skills will develop too as you relate to those you work with/for. Set up your own Instagram account and shamelessly show off your work. Progress to Vimeo or YouTube but don’t expect huge viewing figures. Be realistic. Remain optimistic. With a hint of idealism thrown into the mix. Possibly the most important thing (others will know a lot more about this than me) is to do something - anything - to get you started... And have fun along the way.
  18. This and the new Sony Xperia 1 show just how dated the RED Hydrogen was always doomed to become... despite having a body designed to outlast the average volcano.
  19. So that’s €10 post Brexit...
  20. Reassuring that Mattias has positive things to say. I’ve backed it.
