Fredrik Lyhne got a reaction from Stanley in Panasonic G85 review - is there any need to get an Olympus E-M1 Mark II for video?
Haha, I the guess the tripod has some value after all  Love the IBIS though!
If you look closely at my video the focus is on the forehead and cheeks while the nose and chin is slightly off. It may not matter but it would have been a better test with a smaller aperture.
It's great to see other people test/footage and compare them to our own. To learn from each others "faults" and discuss these things is very valuable to me. Thanks for sharing!

I think so. I'm not sure about the smudged detail but it could be the brightness I guess? Could also be that focus is slightly off as he moves around a little and you're shooting handheld. His face look more smudgy than his arm I think and isn't his watch a lot crispier than his glasses? I don't know. If you look closely at my video on iso 6400 you can see that it's a little more smudgy on the temples than in the face.
Nice footage though and NR at -5 sure makes a huge difference!

I dont know, I would have to test that again. Could try to do so this weekend.
I bought a Tiffen Ultra Contrast Filter as 37mm Version. Then i took a metall saw and removed the filter housing very carefully, so that I ended up with just the glas. At first I had the impression that it might be too thick, but when I put it inside the speedbooster it doesnt touch the speedbooster glas because it is a bit larger than it. The glas of the rear element of the Sigma lens doesnt protrude as well. Anyways, I put the glas inside the speedbooster and then carefully mounted the sigma lens - no issue at all. The filterglas stays at its place - seems to be a perfect fit.

Tom Antos just did a video on dynamic range between different cameras including those, perhaps a decent watch:

You just need the right adapter, with the Metabeans Speed Roaster your GH5 can do an espresso just fine!
Just make sure your sensor gets really hot!

Is it really so much for us to ask for it to have a coffeemaker built in, though? I mean we've got IBIS now, so caffeine jitters won't be an issue. This is obviously the next logical step here.

I did some tests today with different settings and Andrew's Procolor mode. Forgive me my awesome hangover look - 4K screencaps
This is the OOC Standard Profile with 0/-5/0/-5:

And this is with Procolor applied:

To be honest, I dont really like it. My skin looks as if I had sex with an orange.
This is my own quick grade with Filmconvert:

And since I am using normally Standard with -5/-5/-5/-5, here are the same shots again.
    First OOC:

    Procolor:

    Own grade:

To my eyes, there are no real differences between -5 on all and -5/0/-5/0. Yet, maybe I didnt recover totally.

Photo consumers are moved by things they don't understand/really need all the time, haha. Kinda reminds me a little of this:
I see no real reason for the GH5 to be a larger form factor if it can be fit into a photo-cam shape/size/weight. If Panasonic made a larger cam I would hope that it would be closer to the Varicams in ability. Like a super FS7.

Which version of FCPX are you using? Your disk's speed doesn't affect render times, only editing speed. Rendering is mainly a processor task. Also I saw a massive boost in render times when I updated my FCPX in 10.2.3 version. If you are running an older version try this.

I don't get what you mean Cary, the only thing clipping is the tiny reflection on the top of the marble? Doesn't matter in an ISO test does it?
I only posted this so @jonpais could see the difference in exposure between the GH4 and GX85. In my experience skin tones and highlights look a lot better when underexposing with these cameras and that could be why he thinks the image from GX85/G85 look less "filmic".
    GX85 is nr. 1 and GH4 is nr. 2

Ok, I've got a rumor. First 500 units are free. Please pre-order thru the link to have a chance!
Yes, I agree on spring likely being true. I do not agree on January. There's seriously nothing to support actual availability by then. That's not even a rumor anymore, it's just something that people want to be true. Doesn't mean it is. Anyways. Not a good idea to pre-order anything in the first place.

Looking at https://www.facebook.com/groups/pansonicgh5/ one of the mentioned things is http://www.divephotoguide.com/underwater-photography-scuba-ocean-news/rumor-panasonic-gh5-coming-early-january-2017/ , which obviously is a bogus title.

Sorry, I meant in FF fov and with the 4K crop. Forgot that you use 1080p and the XL version. So it's basically 23-45mm  in 1080p and a little narrower in 4K.
The 20mm is a great lens as well, I'm on my second copy but I don't use it often. It's just that for me the 15mm hits the sweet spot if both the subject and background is equally important, like in travel photography.

No, this is more like a 11,5 - 22,5 f1.1 - or less wide, once you go for 4K or enable electronic stabilization. I think i will get the smallrig cage and another handle that mounts on the cage, so that I can sleep better at night
About 15mm vs. 20mm - i totally agree with you. 15mm is about the same as the iPhones do - and they work pretty well. However, i dont really know why, but i just love the Pana 20mm - so small and yet a linear focus, although the throw is a bit long for my taste. The second version feels way better than the first version.

    Nice recording!
Orangenz, out of curiosity why did you not upload this 4k onto YouTube?
I think your white balance is fine (but perhaps you corrected it in post?), but I find the footage a little under exposed (which is the source of those strong red and orange tints).
If you look at the scope it is mighty crowded in the black and shadows region.
I disagree with Vesku that highlights are clipping.
Lighting is a bit uneven, some of the reflections are a bit harsh.
I don't know how many lights you used but it is sometimes worthwhile to point one towards the ceiling to get a nice diffused base light of the whole scene which allows you to place the main and key lights a bit farther away.
    And great bokeh balls!

    Here you go:

Excuse the bad quality, but my phone is the only other camera I have  I also took your recommendation for the Smallrig Grip - awesome stuff! Yet i am thinking about whether I should add a metalwire or sth like that to the grip and the camera straps, just in case the pressure on the hotshoe is too big... For now it feels pretty rock solid, but I dont know whether I dare to trust this in the long run.
During christmas I will make a small example video. Up until now I am just running around here at home and loving the lowlight as well as the focus ring, feels like Voigtländer!
I think this GX80+ SB XL + Sigma 18-35 combo is kind of unmatched, there isnt another stabilized system out there that gives me the DOF of f2.2 (FF equiv) with such a wide angle zoom. Loving it! Now if the GX80 would have a mic in an 4k60p I probably would ban myself from this forum to not get caught by the GAS again. Have to admit, this camera is really nailing it for me. Paired with the Pana 20mm, I have a very stealthy kit when I need it, with the Sigma I am now ready for my next backpacking trip.

and external mic input if you like putting a fluffy shotty on the top.
    Shot this on GX85, 25mm 1.4, and 42.5 1.7

Fredrik Lyhne reacted to Oliver Daniel in To Buy, Or Not To Buy: The Canon 1DX mk II
Well now you mention it, I have made up my mind - after fully reviewing the purchase - I WON'T be getting the 1DX mk II.
    For these reasons:
    1. The wi-fi module which should be built in, is very expensive for what it is.
    2. The touch screen isn't tilted or articulated. Also with no exposure aids whatsoever, an additional monitor is essential. These are pricey and I imagine it would be awkward trying to use DPAF and an external monitor at the same time.
    3. Memory Cards + File Sizes. Turnover is important. Sometimes shoots are so thick and fast, you need more memory cards in case you don't have time to dump the footage and format the cards. These Cfast 2 cards are bloody pricey!
    4. CLOG. Like austinchimp said, I find dynamic range very important. Having looked at examples of the pretend CLOGs available, I see very little dynamic range benefit. A little more leeway in the shadows and a smoother knee, but not enough really. The roll-off is still pretty steep. I'm much more used to SLOG.
    5. Stills. Nothing to moan about however the body as a stills camera is overkill for me, now I've held it. It's cool, but it's a chunky picture taker!
    6. Target market. It IS a journalists camera - fast action and ready for anything. Great! But I'm not the right market for this product, the community around the camera is slim. Plus very little movement on third party accessories for video shooters.
    What I am doing:
I have an investment in the FS5 which can be stripped down and bulked up as necessary. I've decided to pump my cash into this system and make it the best tool it can be, so I can get on and not want/need another camera for years.
The FS5 can be stripped down for gimbal use and motion control sliders, and souped up into a 4k120fps monster. Using a quick release system and an assistant, I can change from tool to tool pretty swiftly.
Autofocus? It's not critical, just very nice to have. But I think I'll be selling all my EF glass and buy Sony glass instead, so they work natively at the highest performance without issues. I'd be "stuck" in the Sony system however I don't really care, I'll have everything I need to shoot video.
I'll grab an A6300/A6500 for stills or something.
I think it's really beneficial to stick to a single camera system. You can really get to learn it and master it. All this chopping and changing can slow down progress and take your eye off the whole point: creating great content.

Will do. What I can tell for now after a quick test: the focus ring is awesome, nearly on the same level as the the one of the Voigtländers - nicely damped. Vignetting is clearly visible in normal photomode and (although less) in 1080p. Only in 4k, when the additional crop is applied the vignetting disappears. I yet have to see whether the vignetting appears when electronic stabilization is added. Yet, the lens itself is quite the monster... my hands were getting tired quite soon.
No joke... I totally dont get it to be honest, already mailed the Metabones support, no reply yet. When i fully zoom until 35mm, the lowest aperture I can set is f3.6 - something is not right.

So, I finally got my Sigma 18-35 in combination with the Canon EF Speedbooster XL. Yes, this thing is huge! But up until now it ticks so many boxes for me, that I am considering to keep it.
Just one thing is really weird: when i turn the zoom ring, the aperture (!) changes, no matter which mode I am in, even in M or A?! It starts at f1.1 @18mm which is correct - however it goes all the way up until it hits f3.6 when zoomed @35mm - I dont get it, maybe @conurus could chime in?

What I like to do to analyze what a shot needs... I go into Photoshop and then add a layer of color balance. I ended up liking MT CR+6/MG-9/YB-9, SD CR+2/MG+1/YB0, HL CR+13/MG-7/YB+18 and then a layer to reduce the vibrance by about 20%, some exposure tweaks... and you'd go from:

    to

So... looks like it could use a little cooler setting? Yet with boosted reds and taken out greens. So concerning that 'trial & error', give that a go!

I got to play with the new Olympus E-M1 II today, a pro Micro Four Thirds camera they hope will sell for $2000. It certainly pulls out all the stops to imitate a miniature 1D X Mark II.
This camera does NOT crop the sensor in 4K mode like the GH4. Instead, it over-samples from 5K down to 4K, using the full width of the sensor even with sensor-shift 5 axis stabilisation enabled.
Featuring a 237Mbit codec, the image quality in Cinema 4K mode is outstanding with very little rolling shutter.

Thanks, I really like the L-Monochrome profile. I used it with everything dialed down and the orange filter. I underexposed most of the shots by about a stop, which was probably a mistake, but it turned out okay. More tests.
