Sorry but that is poor grading. There is no banding in the footage. There is noise and macroblocking when pushed too much, but I'm surpriced how good it actually holds up for 8 bit.

you can easily upres a shot film on a decent camera like the alexa or f35 to 4k and no one will notice.  Actually recently my man Nate said he did a test between amira at 2.6k uprezed to 4k and sony f55 at 4k and the amira resolved more resolution.
    it's all a gimmick.
    4k is the next 3d.
Just there to sell tvs.  But not many people even notice 1080p vs 720p while watching 10-20 ft from a tv - and also compression is the major thing - not resolution - gosh in the US the TV cable stuff is soooo compressed - it has gotten to youtube levels of quality.

No, I work in movie theater projection and 99 out of a hundred films are delivered in the 2K format. The majority of cinemas have 2K projectors still and Mad Max, The Hobbit, and many others were mastered in 2K and received IMAX releases. We are a couple of years away from 4K being the cinema standard. Perfect 2K is plenty. I've seen up scaled 720p used for documentaries often.

So I returned the A7sii yesterday.
Like with all Sonys, it first feels perfect. There is so much to like with them.
Everything from the handling, features, build, specs etc.

The A7sii is a joy to shoot, much improved DR, mind blowing lowlight and great IS for old glass.
But.... still... when grading and viewing the finished image... its just not there yet.
I hate being able to get the Slog-3 where I want it just to see it band.
Or to be satisfied with the Slog-2 in general and then see what it does to skin.
In short, its a super awesome and great camera, but its not for me.
With that said I did a top 5 review.

benymypony reacted to Mattias Burling in Testing "Instagram" for video LUTs
One of the guys behind the looks in Instagram has released a set of LUTs.
Whats great, and also bad, its that they are quick drag-n-drops for Rec709. So little to no adjustment needed. As you can imagine the "vintage" is strong with these. But there are some modern looks as well.
I count at least 5, flipping through them, that will give a very nice base for a modern non vintage and non stualized look (only used one of them in the video, couldn't help myself, went for the Insta Look  ).
I just played around with them a little today. So don't take it as "finished looks" but more what base for tweaking they would give you.
Some bars and grain and possibly a vignette would probably really make it true "Instagram", but I didn't do it this time,
I plan on using them on NX500 footage which I almost exclusively shoot in standard PP and full auto.
For Log I will stick to my regular grading. (even though Log to Rec709 Luts are included.
BTW: Last time I did this, some where upset so I say it again to clarify. These are LUTs, they are ment to be tweaked. They aren't a quick fix for everything.
The reason I didn't last time, nor this time, tweak to much is because then the viewer will have no idea what part of the grade the LUT stood for.

benymypony reacted to Mozim in Beginner Color Grading - LUTS or Red Giant?
In my experience with Panasonic cameras, you should avoid using LUTs. I haven't shot with VLog (I'm a GH3 owner) but whenever using LUTs I have to dial them down a lot in order not to destroy the footage. What happens is that your greens will turn into yellow / brown and your reds will look off, too. This is exactly what happened with the footage you posted the other day, too. I really enjoy the GH3 and other Panasonic cameras for the image quality, conveniance, battery life etc. but I'm getting to a point where I simply don't want to use the camera anymore because of the colors.
I use Final Cut Pro X, Color Finale and IWLTBAP LUTs that you can purchase from benymypony. What I usually do is I do basic color correction (highlights, shadows and mids) and then apply a Delut that flattens the image (9090) and then use whatever LUT is pleasing for the particular project. I usually dial down both LUTs to around 50% opacity. After that I do a few minor tweaks. Keep in mind that the footage isn't LOG footage, so be careful using LUTs. It brings your footage to life when you have LOG footage but doesn't work well with regular footage.
Color Finale is a fantastic plugin for FCPX in my experience but your results will strongly depend on the camera you've shot the project with.

benymypony got a reaction from stas.starush in Shooting with a 4K pocket camera - the exceptional Panasonic LX100
Still playing with the LX100, I tried a lot of profile settings and Highlight/Shadow curves to get the best image for color grading.
Finally I recommend the following settings :
Contrast -2 / Sharpen -3 / Noise reduction -2 / Saturation 0 Highlight -2 / Shadow -2 As it's impossible to apply a real LOG flat profile in-camera, so I created a LUT to flatten the image the safest way.
I based this LUT on the rendering of the VisionLOG profile with some adjustments.
    Download (.3dl and .cube in ZIP, 2.5MB) :  IWLTBAP_Flattener_LUT.zip

benymypony got a reaction from stas.starush in Shooting with a 4K pocket camera - the exceptional Panasonic LX100
I got a LX100 yesterday and I just started to play with the 4K.
The image is great for a small and inexpensive camera (I got mine at €500/$545, used but as new).
Maybe I'll make a longer post about my opinion on the LX100, but for the time being I love it.
Of course we are far away from the quality of the BMCC 4K but I bought the LX100 to downscale in 1080p and get a beautiful image.
For info, I downscale easily with RockyMountains (freeware).
First thing I noticed is that the 4K image can have a grain a bit thick in dark scenes, even a low ISO.
For example below, I shot at 100 ISO indoor and in this 4K 100% crop you can see the "thick grain".
I tried to reduce this grain in a non-destructive way and finally I got this result via curves and levels :
    Before : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8492265/iwltbapluts/crop-LX100-before.jpg
    After : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8492265/iwltbapluts/crop-LX100-after.jpg
    GIF before/after : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8492265/iwltbapluts/lx100-lut-grain-reducer-before-after.gif
I made a LUT (.3dl and .cube in ZIP, 3.5MB), feel free to test : IWLTBAP_LX100_Grain_Reduction.zip
PS : Yes, I'm aware that a LUT can't modify an image, but just the colors ; here I tried to reduce the chroma of grain/noise and unify the whole in reducing the overall light. Hope it helps

don't expect anything like that  from sony, they have a pro 4k camera segment to protect, the only companies that could have given us the best bang for our buck ( such as 4k raw on usb3) are companies that do not have higher priced 4k camera segment to upsell ( black magic in the begining tried but they now have a higher price range of camera to protect, samsung tried with nx serie but failed as they are getting out of the camera market). let's wait for the next new comer to flip the market upside down - the obvious thing that will change everything is an open firmware where third party developers can add features inside the camera, again samsung started that but they failed (http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2013/05/28/redesign-your-own-camera-samsung-nx300-nx2000-source-code-released) - do you remember how expensive, crappy and limited where our digital phone services before the smartphone era with the app model, this is where we are now with the digital camera market.

    I could live without 6k.
    Want high DR.
And 4K RAW to the Shogun instead.
Otherwise I would probably buy it.
But the NX1 sounds pretty close to it. A NX2 would be nice, if they pick it up again.

Without doubt my favourite camera series of the last 5 years has been the Panasonic GH range.
But with the Sony A6300 on the horizon sporting a Super 35mm sensor with full 6K readout, is the future looking a bit shaky for Panasonic's video wunderkind?

The lack of touch screen is unforgiveable.
For all the people that moan that pros don't need a touch screen in models like the A7 and RX series, seeing Dan Chung's News Shooter touch screen demo clearly illustrates the focus pulling-like capabilities a touch screen offers.
What's the point of having state-of-the-art PDAF without having easy access to focus point selection?

A real bargain for $1000, you're getting the image of an FS5 with better AF system, better EVF and 4x cheaper in a MUCH smaller body.
Shame no IBIS but it is only one third of the price of the A7R II!
