DayRaven reacted to DPStewart in Sound Mixing/Editing - where do you usually get all the audio?
Foley (always capitalize 'Foley" because it's from his name. Otherwise the audio engineers send old gross fruitcakes to your house.)

Foley is a NIGHTMARE to try to do with pre-recorded sound effects.
Sure - it's completely possible - but it takes a horribly long time to do as compared to just grabbing a mic and doing the Foley yourself. And it's tedious. VERY tedious. And no matter how big your collection is - 95% of it won't work for whatever that project in front of you today is.

Get a book on the art of Foley, and then invest in enough junk to do it yourself. WAY easier and actually FUN.

DayRaven reacted to Oliver Daniel in My first music video shot on A7SII is finally released!
So yep... I've been shooting with the A7SII pretty extensively on a bunch of music videos.
This particular video is narrative-only, shot in Whitby UK within 6 hours with a crew of 5 people including make up artist.
My duties? I wrote the idea, shot, lit, graded and edited the video in FCPX.
Most of the video was shot in natural light. One night scene was lit with Lupolux Dual LEDs and Scorpion Lights, powered by batteries (lifesaver!). The sun was going down quick and we used the A7SII up until ISO 12,800.
Picture profiles were custom Slog2 profile and also custom Cine2, shot in 4k 25fps.
We used the Sony CLM-FHD monitor on the camera (very useful). Would never used the camera without a monitor again unless desperate. Camera remains light and easy to use.
Gimbal shots were on the Ronin-M, with the full IBIS activated with the Sony Vario-Tessar 24-70mm - operated in upright mode. Fantastic combination.
Handheld lenses were Sigma 18-35mm (used at 35mm), Samyang 14mm and Helios 44-2 85mm (bloody well hard lens to focus!).
This video wouldn't of been possible to shoot in 6 hours without the A7SII. The aesthetic helped the video with it's murky look, and the portability with IBIS was awesome. Helped keep us on our toes and be creative with the shots.
Issues? I went through 9 batteries and er, the zip on my coat broke and er... I got a wet ass?... that's about it.
I'll let you guys decide what you think the story is about and all that jazz.
    Hope you enjoy it!!

Did a shoot with a mate and we had identical cameras but he was using a really old beat up Nikon 50 1.4 and I was using the Canon 50 1.8 II. The difference was shocking, the Nikon just popped and looked cinematic and the canon just looked flat, ok colours maybe but no pop and no wow, flat and dead when compared side by side! Made me realise, had I not seen the Nikon side by side, I would not have seen how bad some lenses really are. Not that I was expecting miracles from canon's nifty fifty, but I've taken a lot of sharp photos with that lens and it has never let me down but dome designs are just in another class!! http://yannickkhong.com/blog/2016/2/23/the-problem-with-modern-optics

Indeed.  It's one of the fascinating things to me regarding US politics insomuch as the pro biz party also has in its corner the evangelical religious folks, who you'd think would be pretty clear headed about the morality of things.  Then again, maybe they're not really that concerned with a philosophical morality, only how they perceive their own.
Anyway, I'm on record as saying I don't think capitalism makes it out of the 21st century.  That's not exactly great insight.  Many people smarter than me are on board with that assertion.  I mean, look, less than 100 people have more wealth than 3.5 billion people on the planet.  I mean, I'm not against affluence, but hoarding wealth is just not healthy for a culture.  It is immoral.  Society is just going in the wrong direction; does;t mean we're doomed, just that we need to adjust.
Enterprising people and moneymakers will always be around, but the system and culture of modern capitalism is too reliant on gluttony and exploitation to survive the social and economic stresses of the future.  I suppose it could be argued that it's gone already, if it ever really existed in the first place.  How does one see an "invisible hand" anyway? ;-)  I doubt Adam Smith would even approve of the twisted version of his system as practiced today.
Unions are really the only effective way, right now, to push back against those that willingly exploit.
And unions aren't needed everywhere.  I assert a business, any business, can be healthy and generous without maximizing profits at the expense of their employees.  Their are nobler goals to strive for.

Right, so I downloaded my original file from vimeo (a 1gb file lasting 7mins, so you do the bitrate mathematics - lots of the original 50mbs xavc-s data lost in the original export).
The original file had seen no adjustments at all.  just an interpret from 50p to 25p.  - as we all know the 50p mode on the a7s isn;t as good as the 25p mode, so the sony was at a disadvantage in bitrate terms from the moment i pressed record.
Camera was set to auto exposure, and auto white balance.  s-log was disabled.  i was using neutral creative style with contrast and sharpening dialled down to -3.

I just put the vimeo downloaded file into premiere and applied a contrast and saturation boost using 'ProcAmp'.
    - this provides a 32bit workspace adjustment of brightness -24, contrast +146, and saturation +140.
No grading was applied.  if this was shot in s-log all I;d have to do to get the same contrast is to adjust contrast and brightness in procamp more strongly.

The biggest problem with users is that they overcomplicate things.  if accuracy is important an image doesn't need ANY colour correction if the wb is set correctly at the start.  all it needs is a change to the levels to provide the blacks and whites, then finally a midtone adjustment.  a flat rec709 profile just needs less adjustment than a log profile.

Anyway, I'm done with this thread.  go use your nikon if it makes things easier.

I'm a massive, massive fan of the original Ghostbusters.
For this new iteration, I think it's a great move to have female Ghostbusters - especially with some of Hollywoods best female comedy actors and Paul Feig.
There is a BUT though. The original films worked because the humour was so deadpan, dark and offset by silly yet terrifying visuals. It also had this kind of weird realism to it. It was serious, yet ridiculous. This trailer shows us this in reverse.
To me, it looks like the Scooby Doo films (visually) and the humour seems to be a gag based affair, kind of like an Adam Sandler or Martin Lawrence movie. The tone seems very cartoonish and parody-like, reminiscent of the Scary Movie series - complete with "fat jokes" and "sick" gags.
I feel the VFX from the original is superior, it's far more "black humoured" and equally quite scary for kids, whereas this would fit straight into a ghost level on a next-gen Mario game.
The appeal does need to cater the new audience, however, they have done themselves no favours with the typical Hollywood comedy edit of this trailer for audiences who know the original.
The female cast isn't the issue, but there a lot of other factors to be worried about if you're a fan of Ghostbusters.
This is still a trailer and may not reflect the real movie at all. I remember the mouth watering Man Of Steel trailer which was almost art house like, very emotional and brooding - yet the real film was a Transformers style Superman destruction fest. Hardly the film I saw in the trailer.
Maybe when we get to 27+ in age, we can't grasp this modern sparkly filmmaking because we have the nostalgia of the past versions. In my view, I much prefer the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the new one as the characters felt real and grounded, based on the practical effects and smaller budget. The new one is like a video game where Shredder is the Final Boss and he's going to kill you with this Transformer mech style rocket blades. Just doesn't seem as good to me, but I'm not 10 years old with memories of the 90's eh?
I want this Ghostbusters film to be good, but in my personal opinion, this trailer isn't a good start. I think Hollywood should "cut down their production scale. The visuals no longer look convincing or tangible, plus the studio has far too much power over content and creativity. Take the route of Netflix, who obviously give a massive degree of creative freedom to their talent.

It's just plain basic misogyny.  I don't know why anyone should be shocked by this sort of reaction.  The internet is run by 15 year olds.  15 years old, literally and figuratively.  Insecure dudes need a scapegoat for their sexual anxiety.
Also, they have a hard time relating to gals as regular complex human beings.  As such they don't want anything other than the simple objectified stereotypical woman in their pop culture.  Which, by the way, I think they view pop culture a little bit as their entitlement.  --And I would note that, in a sense, they deserve to feel this way as MOST successful pop culture and commercial marketing caters directly to them.
And they like that stuff segregated.  The ladies can have their own stuff, but their response is to relegate it to the dismissive Chick Flick category,  "Put it in the corner. There we go.  Okay, that feels better."
When a well regarded pop culture franchise goes against the norm, they get bent out of shape, simply because they're not very sophisticated people.  Some of them might be some day, but at the moment many are not...might not ever be.
I suppose it's good to try and push back against this ridiculousness, but it's like trying to push back the tide with a broom.
So, dial up the SJW umbrage if you feel you must.  Be aware that most young guys are just stupid and confused.  Although, might as well try to get through to a few, I suppose.  Worse things to do.
All that said, hey, it might not be a great movie.

Please share some material of yours that backs up the counterargument to the one I'm making.  and also read the video description before coming to conclusions.   if you can see blacks and whites in uncorrected flat material then it's serious under or over exposed.  This is correctly exposed, with a overcast sunlight so contrast is naturally low anyway. so there are no whites or blacks   Download the original file and apply a contrast adjustment and the colour looks right.  We're not talking about contrast, blacks or white.  we're discussing colour accuracy.
this was shot auto white balance with no adjustments.  If you can;t get a good image from this original file It's your fault not the camera.

I'm not, the ps4 has a similar amount of power to a custom gaming PC that costs about £450-£500, and a PC that costs £2000 is considered about right to get 1440p resolutions at a decent frame rate. Next gen though, for sure

    What was it shot on?
just kidding. But I think it's a really well "shot" show, and maybe doesn't get the credit it deserves. Particularly season 4. Kinda blows me away really. don't need to just share every single film or show that looks good, and it's hardly a "topic", but just wanted to give it a shout out. the amount of silence for a children's show, the fight scenes, the landscapes, the different aspect ratios (usually 4:3), it's all just awesome. They actually get away with quite a bit for it being a kids' show - most of the enemies are robots, so they're allowed to get "gory". It's all on Hulu, if anyone cares. the equivalent of this for someone like us might be just an enormous budget, admittedly, but I still find it inspiring. haha, hope it's not all just nostalgia and that I'm not just spamming, but yeah  . happy shooting!
