  1. Hi Fuzzynormal, I completely agree with you. It only matters what you are expecting from a camera that it should depend on the context of the shooting first. From my small personal experience, the NX1 does suffer from a low DR (its like 10 stops max), but also from the codec H265, which has to be transcoded first, and the breaks appart quite quickly (again IMHO) during the grading. However the NX1 offers very nice colors which are quite a good place to start. Now if you really want to go for a film look, I wouldn't necessarily go for a NX1. However, if you are going to have a lot of interviews, I would trust the NX1 skin colors better than Sony A7s Slog.
  2. Hi Philip, I have the exact same dilemma as you : ) I still think some cinematic style is achievable with the NX1 though. But for now I think we lack some latitude for color grading : / (H265,+ no log )

    GH4 V-Log $99

Sure, check out the girl in black at 0:18 At 1:05 the traffic light (the one who's turned off), is very noisy, and then when graded is heavily "macroblocked". If the original file was available for download, I would gladly take a look at it : ) Also the GH4 is just noisy in dark areas. Like, always. So I'm not surprised, but I'll be very curious to see how much dynamic range is actually usable after using v-log. May I also say that I own a GH4 myself, so I'm not trying to be overcriticizing just for pleasure ; ) And I'll probably upgrade to V-Log, at least to try and have some fun with it ! I agree with you, but for me GH4 + external recorder gets immediately compared to Sony a7s + ext recorder. And personally I would then choose the later option... Also external recorder are like as expensive as the camera... So almost 3.500$ / 4.500$ if you add the price for medias, accessories, etc. Its the price of a Ursa Mini... : / For me the GH4 is a fantastic "run & gun" small - compact- super easy to use setup... But that's just me : )

    GH4 V-Log $99

There is still this noise in the dark areas, that gets compressed in some weird macroblocks :/
  5. Which is why they don't do it. To not kill the competition, because Samsung loves competition so much. I apologize for the sarcasm, but I am so interested in the reason behind Samsung not doing anything better than 4k 24p H265. Hell they wouldn't even need 6k raw to kill the competition, 4k H264 60p would be enough.
  6. And 6k raw with 240fps. Or maybe you should buy a Red Dragon
  7. Wonder how this is going to be better / different, than the Defy G2X, Moza lite, Dji Ronin M, etc. There are already many competitors on the market...
  8. Its... "complicated". But some lenses will fit.
  9. I agree that Samsung is being too shy on lenses. I am still working on a video/test we did with a 50mm Leica M lens on the Samsung. Required a (hell) lot of workaround, but I like the result a lot.
  10. Thats interesting. Hummmm I'm thinking of running some tests myself with the NX1.
  11. I think you need to get an NX1 and try for yourself. The DIS is great in some situations. It's a free software addition from Samsung. It never was a selling point for the NX1. But in certain situations when you have to be handheld, or when you have particular lenses, it can come in very handy. I definitely prefer it over premiere warp stabilizer (espescially in terms of time management). And yes there is some rolling shutter at 4K. If you really need long focal + handheld you might want to record in FULL HD since the NX1 is one of the best camera for rolling shutter management in Full HD. Also the detail resolving is so great with the NX1 that you dont feel a lost in quality with the DIS crop. Now what's great, is that if you don't like it, you don't have to use it.

    Pilotfly H1+

thanks : ) ill be waiting to see a bit more of these "corrected" footage before buying anything :)
  14. I would be very interested to see a test between a 0-255 -> then converted to 16-235 in the NLE vs a 16-235 recording. Correct me if I'm wrong but when you export your editing (youtube, mp4, H264), you end up in a 16-235 color space right ?

    Pilotfly H1+

Is it just me or does anyone els feels like the "bouncing" feel is a dealbreaker ? This motion that goes up & down while you walk is kind of really weird and unnatural :/
  16. Hey guys, As I did those tests, I was trying to see how far the DIS would help on a 85mm - which has no IS - and in tricky situations. I don't think you should trust any test. Si was just an example based on my needs and don't have the purpose of covering anyone else's way of filming, needs, etc. I agree with what had been said about testing it yourself first. It is very easy and quick to add/ remove the function and you can see result right away. In some situations it can be handy (if you have a lens with no IS, or if you don't have a tripod / gimbal , etc.). However there is no miracle, and we shouldn't expect any from a DIGITAL stabilisation. Personally I treat it as a time efficient solution if you don't want to spend hours stabilizing footage in post. If you use the "S" line of Samsungs lenses you'll get much better results - and of course the results are easier to gain when you have shorter focal length. I will also try with a Leica 50mm 1.4 to see what it looks like. Thanks for your comments
  17. i also dropped my on the concrete when shooting in a snowy new york... This thing is incredibly resistant.
  18. Haha Yes that was quite shaky But, the 85mm is quite hard to stabilise handheld :/ Also I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but the DIS helps a lot with camera movements in general (panning for instance). It really smoothes things out !
  19. Some tests I just did with the Samsung DIS:
  20. Any idea what video DIS is ?? Ok so I think it might be Digital Image Stabilization
  21. Compared to what I have been reading on dpreview, I agree, It's not asking much ^^ Some people would like raw + UHD 120 fps, etc... I think there might be some of them out there who confused the NX1 for a Red Weapon. Maybe the price tag could help them realise the difference ^^
  22. Seems like the next major firmware update isn't far : http://***URL removed***/forums/thread/3892062#forum-post-56347354 Source (in korean) http://www.popco.net/zboard/zboard.php?id=dica_forum_samsung&no=8974
  23. Thanks Ed : ) Also I got to watch your video in Cuba, that was amazing work !
  24. Hi Ed, How do you like the A7R II so far ? I didn't have a chance to play with it yet, but I haven't been convinced by the colors - especially skin tones - the camera produces (compared to Samsung NX1 for instance). I would be very much interested in your opinion : ) Thanks !
