  1. Thanks for your comment : ) I agree with all you said. I would just like to mention that maybe the price gap might not be as important as anticipated: For the URSA mini, you still need to add: URSA mini 4.6k EF: 5000$ Viewfinder: 1500$ VLock battery plate: 100$ Shoulder kit: 400$ Cfast (these are going to be expensive): 400$ (128 gb) Total: around 7.5k Now I'm no expert for Red cameras, so I'm not sure how much - and what - you are going to have to add to get a comparable "shoulder + viewfinder" rig. Would be happy to have anyone's opinion on that : )
  2. Can't wait to see how it compares to the URSA mini in terms of size / weight / IQ.
  3. Faster lens, neat video, LEDs, and that's pretty much it...
  4. Seems to me that GH4 always had a huge noise problem. I interpreted that as "faking dynamic range". So V-Log just makes that worse :/ But will be curious to see more results, and test some more - especially with the "legit" version (if it really changes anything...)
  5. Very noisy too for me. Also some kind of color clipping. I need to run some more tests...
  6. If you had a NX1 you would definitely not understand why you should pay for any software upgrade well let's be honest, this thread is encouraging it
  7. Found a workaround : save the v-log preset as "standard" profile. Next time you'll have it saved on the STD profile even if you change the picture mode.
  8. What about the lenses : ) ??
  9. But then you have to add RED SSD, RED batteries, RED things... and then your bank calls you
  10. It's not like there isn't any competition... so if people want to buy a premium price for Sony products well I don't see any problem with that... Panasonic and Samsung are producing competitive products for half the price. Also the A7s II comes with S-log3 - will be curious to see how it compares to the A7R II S-log2.
  11. its the next major update that will support h265 - later this year The title of the topic is misleading I think :/
  12. Seems to me that the lower resolution sensor should help a lot with that - but I'm no engineer :/
  13. Hi to all of you, I thought I'd regroup some of my experiments with Samsung's NX1. I'm trying to get better with this camera as I would like to use it on a documentary project - which involves a cinematic look. I first used the NX1 when I had to shoot a 20min movie (mostly interviews and landscapes) for a client a little bit all over the world - will share the link when my client uploads the video on his Youtube. My first reaction was quite enthusiastic but as the early adopters know, they were a few glitches, that we had to deal with : - In the transcoding step: it was very slow, and there could be some heavy macroblocking and/or loss of information in the dark areas - The exposure drift problem (Have some of these in interview scenes - they're really annoying). - The autofocus that was too quick - etc. Most if not all these issues were fixed by Samsung with their updates, and iffmpeg and Editready had tons of updates since, improving the workflow A LOT. I recently did a few experiments: 1st : With a friend - photographer - we bought an adaptor for Leica M lenses (which is more precisely a mount, than an adapter since you have to remove samsung's mount and some plastic, very close to the sensor area). We could only fit one Leica lens so far, but loved the result. 2nd : I was very unhappy with the skies that I had shot a while ago in New York. There was so much banding in them. I don't know if the firwmare changed or, if the transcoding is cleaner, or the ability to record in 0-255. But things have improved a lot. I'll try to keep this page alive with the various test that I'll run. If you have some ideas, please don't hesitate to ask. I can't promise I'll have time to test everything, but I'll do my best ! Here are the links : Leica M test: https://youtu.be/RXfLqVOQig8 Blue skies: https://youtu.be/2COkbUi82zM
  14. Here is another grading experience. I had lots of issues with large areas of blue skies with the NX1's earlier firmwares. I'm not sure if the problem was my ND Filter creating some kind of "banding". I'm much happier with latest results I got. Lens used is the 85mm Samsung (no OIS :/ ). https://youtu.be/2COkbUi82zM
  15. @philip page That's just the NX1 by itself. Never tried the NX1 with the Shogun. Thanks a lot : ) The workflow is the following : NX1 (0-255) / iffmpeg, premiere pro (warp + Lut visioncolor M31 + Filmconvert 1DC profile). That's pretty much it, it's pretty basic coloring so far : )
  16. No major issues so far, and I can still switch back to the former mount without too many manipulations. However the flange distance (I think its how its called) is quite short, so we cant fit our Leica 35mm. We're not done experimenting though : )
  17. Great news ! Can't wait to see how it will handle projects with H265 in terms of performances.
  18. Hey Philip, here is an example of result I got from the NX1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DEXoZ1WC_A I did use a fantastic lens (Leica 50mm Summilux) but I think the NX1 can have some room for grading - you just have to make a lot of test before the shooting : deciding what kind of color / look you want to give to your footage, and then see how much the codec can support before it starts breaking out - and see if the locations for the shooting (landscapes, blue sky, portraits, etc.).
  19. Premiere Pro warp stabilzer - I was also quite impressed with the result too !
  20. Thanks Marco, I think it was Gamma DR mode, with contrast -2, sharpness -10, saturation -1 / 0 can't remember... Shutter speed was all over the place cause we didn't have any ND filter.
  21. Well actually your answer is correct : ) Because we did manage to make a Leica M lens fit on the samsung (did required to get rid of some plastic near the sensor though, and using a homemade adaptor - not made by us). Hey TheRenaissanceMan: that was kind of the point about the colors : ) so thanks for noticing. I have to say I'm not confident I could reach this kind of color + skin tones with a GH4 though. Lens used is a 50mm Leica M Summilux : ) So yes it is a NX1, in 4K UHD mode - used a M31 Lut, and filmconvert (from 1DC not - log profile). I used filmconvert that way cause I think that the M31 is supposed to give you some "Canon-like" colors. Works moderately ok for me : )
  22. Yes there is some blocking in the blacks (on the shirt of the lady). Not sure if the blocking is due to youtube's conversion, or just because the blacks are a little bit underexposed. I tend to expose for the highlights with the NX1 cause the blacks zones are usually silky-nice. You had a challenging situation in terms of DR, with a person with a dark skin, wearing a very dark shirt/dress, standing in front of a window (highlights). Thats the kind of situation where you have 3 solutions: - Place the person facing the window instead of standing in front of it. - Light the person a little more to make up for the difference in terms of exposure. - Use a camera with a little more DR (like a A7S / A7R II) - but you could face a challenge in terms of skin tone during the grading - caused by s-log 2 - thus you'll maybe want to go with another color profile which will cause losing some DR... Or you just buy a red Dragon and make our lives easier haha ; )
  23. So it's not a Miller Delut - it's the M31 visioncolor + filmconvert. The lens used is a 50mm Leica M Summilux. And I'm really impressed by some of you, in different ways : ) Also, its not a smartphone : ) Maybe the fact that the focus is slightly off could misguide you ; )
  24. And here is a "stabilized" version : http://youtu.be/0DEXoZ1WC_A Would be happy to hear your comments / suggestions / answers.
  25. Well if Hene1 doesn't mind, I'd like to pursue this game : ) So can you guess the camera used ? (sorry for the shakyness !) http://youtu.be/RXfLqVOQig8
