Suddenly clipped highlights, over sharpened, moire and aliasing, 60i and high compression.
    That is the video look
Video look is not: deep depth of field, small sensor (super 16mm is a film look after all), though a crap DP can certainly make anything look like video if they try

Last week I met the Panasonic sales-man in my favorite shop, he told me that V-Log should come out in mid August... it's a long wait 'till October...
They should add the 1.85/2.35/2.39 crop marks and maybe a nice ProRes option via SD card, as my BM Pocket does. It should be not so hard for them.. I would pay for that!
I love my Pocket, but the GH4 is far more easy to use run and gun!
    V-Log! V-Log! V-Loggggg!

I'm exclusively using SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC 64GB 95MB/s cards. SanDisk has proven themselves with the Extreme Pro series which I went with for the GH2 back in the day. Not the cheapest though.
Lots of people I guess are using the fast Transcend cards as well, which are a bit more affordable. Samsung's PRO-line seems decent too.

    @JazzBox
Yes, the Aputure VS2 replicates the GH4 LCD in every way, - peaking, zebra, zoom, all the menus etc.. So you can use all the GH4 features you are used to. If you don't really need a monitor right now I suggest you wait and save the money for the 501. As I said in the previous post the Aputure is ok, - bigger of course but not as good as the GH4 LCD, - and sure it is nowhere near the 501.
The VS1 display has less resolution and contrast than the VS2 - lesser viewing angle too, - and as the VS2 does not deliver too impressive picture quality personally I would think twice about the VS1.

The pace Andrew kept up the past two years has always amazed me.  I've been expecting him to break down for a long time. Whether he got sick, exploded or quietly walked away doesn't matter.  What's important is he has stepped back and taken some time for himself.   There is no end to camera testing.  There is no end to forum conversations. There are no end of people looking to get something from you.
When I first came upon this site I bought the Canon 50D RAW video manual.  Andrew seemed to be a young film-maker who discovered how one could shoot film quality stuff on a consumer camera.  He was a film-maker first, blog-host second.  Then he started to get access to expensive, professional cameras (not the focus of this site).  Then he got into a "thing" with Canon.  Next came 4K cameras which, though they have their place, distracted him from gimbals, lighting, lenses, audio, and other parts of film-making.
I hope he is returning to film-making and can find some balance between it, and what he has time to share.   I think he's done enough camera tests for one life-time.  I believe the success of this site, which is considerable, came at a personal cost to him.

Problem solved. Got a new cable to day and now the Aputure/GH4 combo works. Very easy setup, - connected the two, switched both on and bingo. Thanks to everyone for your comments and inputs.
About the quality of the Aputere: Well, for the money it is okay. The screen has too much contrast - maybe wrong contrast is the right word -  to my liking. The dark areas are too dark and the bright areas too bright. I've tried different settings for brightness and contrast, but can´t get what I would like. Also I would not trust the Aputure for colors - not terrible colors but not trustworthy. The GH4 LCD has far better balance between dark and light areas and better colors. For framing and most focus work though I guess the Aputure is okay. I have put an Anti Glare Film on top of the glossy screen, this and a DIY-modification on the sunshade made it quite useful  for outdoor use.
Anyways, in 4-5 months time I think I´ll get the SmallHD 501 Sidefinder, - if feedback from real world users is good.

    I have Panasonic G6 and GH4: no problem on both with Olympus 12mm, 17mm, 25, 45.
I choose to sell them to buy other gear I needed (a BM Pocket, some old primes...) but I regret that, because they were amazing, especially for stills, where AF is a must.
For video I'm happy with old manual lenses, but if you shoot both video and photos Olympus are just great!

It all depends on budget and needs of course but I recently whent the EVF route instead.
I figured a 4" screen is good enough as a 5" and with the loupe down its huge due to the magnification.
Found a used but near mint Alphatron for €650.
+ good build, Sony battery (have loads), decent res, iris, Waveform, False Color, Peaking, multiple Zebra patterns, both SDI and HDMI with loop through.
    - A little chunky, price.

Might as well take up on me own advice and give the Lilliput 663/O/P2 a go. It's €309 over here: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00IUAZGNI .
Comes in a neat little case with some accessories. Built is metal, not some flimsy plastic. And then of course there's the functionality. There's nothing quite like it at the price point...

    (Full .pdf at http://www.lilliput.de/pdf/663-2014-web.pdf )
Might still be too expensive, maybe overkill as well for some... but on the bang-for-buck scale to me this really scores points. I do believe that extra bit of dosh will pay itself back... what you have to ask yourself I think is: do I want a secondary screen (noun) or do I quite literally want to monitor (verb) what I'm doing? If you're looking into a monitor, do not neccessarily need an external recorder or something a bit smaller than 7", then this seems to be pretty sweet. I'll report back returning from my holidays once it has come in.
Tomtop is a pretty big player and they're all over eBay and AliExpress with multiple stores as well. I've done a fair share of business with them, always went fine. But when packages get a little bigger, heavier and more expensive, there's an increase of risk that it won't fly under the radar... customs might pick up on that and charge you import duties. So then cheap becomes not so cheap anymore... Just a thing to keep in mind. There's always the thing with the declaring of lower values and as 'gift', something these kind of shops tend to put on, but that's not how the system's supposed to work and customs will probably see through that. So beware.
But there's loads of stuff you can get from China, if you need some help filtering through the masses, there are sites such as http://finddealsfor.me and http://chinaprices.us to make life a little easier. Don't forget to check a site like http://www.retailmenot.com for discount coupons. There's one site in particular that has loads of photography stuff: http://www.linkdelight.com , just like Tomtop, you might find 'em on eBay and AliExpress with multiple stores as well.
One of my favourite stores that has one can be found here: http://www.banggood.com/Aputure-V-Screen-VS-2-Smart-HDMI-7-Inch-LCD-Field-Adv-Video-Monitor-p-950922.html . If you want to go with the Aputure VS-2 and are set to get it from China (taking your chances on import duties), that would be the way to do it. Use coupon ' b185f7 ' on checkout for a 9.99 USD off (Grand Total: US$189.90/€178.00).

SmallHD just announced the 501 monitor, which is a HDMI-only version of the 502, at $899. It's ability to function as an EVF with the upcoming sidefinder is what really makes it attractive to me. Plus the bluetooth joystick control that will also be coming soon.

I can comment on the Aputure VS 2 during the coming weekend, - I ordered one a few days ago and it should be delivered this Friday,
Like most other monitors it should be pretty much useless due to screen glare when used outside - especially in sunlight.  I have some ideas that hopefully will remedy this issue.
I will be back and tell you how it turns out.

I was looking at the same thing. That is: something for the GH4/BMPCC (perhaps BMMCC/BMMSC). Figured the way to go probably would be the Lilliput 663/O/P2 for the most complete 'cheap' monitor (incl. histogram, waveforms, vectorscope, etc).
Up from that the Blackmagic Video Assist as a nice external recorder and monitor combined. But I'm still not sure what the monitoring features specifcally entail.
Then the Videodevices PIX-E5H 4K recorder/monitor with PIX-LR XLR audio interface as the crème de la crème solution, with a premium price tag (still believe it's better value compared to a SmallHD 502 + Sidefinder that doesn't record, or Atomos Shogun / Convergent Design Odyssey Q7+ that do record but have the thing of price, size, storage, mainly).
But yeah, for the entry level... really budget price, Aputure seems to take it away (their LED units are awesome value too). There have been mutiple threads about this subject ( most recently here and here ). Apparently the Feelworlds aren't that bad either. But I kinda feel like paying a bit more might really get you something quite a bit more useful. Depends on what you do with it and how it would add to your style of shooting. So you have to do some soul searching... still working on that myself. Perhaps by the time the Video Assist is availlable I might finally have an actual need for one.

That looks nice. Fairly light. I had a DP7 for GH4/BM and it was so heavy (1.5 lbs) that I just couldn't take it anymore. I sold it and got a SmallHD 502 which is feather light. It stays on top of smalls cameras with ease.
EDIT: The main reason I love using SmallHD with GH4 and BM is the LUT feature. It helps to have a custom LUT to see in the field when shooting LOG or Cine D.

If you expose to the right (ETTR: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/7922-ettr-the-ultimate-exposure-technique/ ) GH4 gives back really good images, even at 1600 ISO.
I also like the grain of the GH4, it is very filmlike. For the profile I would use Natural (with contrast, saturation and sharpness all the way down) or Cinelike D with just the saturation down, because it is very flat. I would not mess with master pedestal or shadows/highlight, you can see the problems here: http://noamkroll.com/the-best-gh4-settings-for-video-why-you-shouldnt-be-tweaking-things-too-much/
    My 2 cents

Ive had to shoot a lot of things at 1600 and I have the best results if I shoot in 4k and downsize to 1080p. Natural profile, master pedestal: +5, -1 highlight and + 1 shadows, contrast -5, saturation -4, noise reduction -4, sharpness - 5, and use a lens that is f2.8 or less
I personally like the noise from the gh4 and downscaling definitely makes it look a whole lot better. sharpening will make the grain stand out more. In most situations where I know it will be pretty low light I use my c/y zeiss 50mm f1.7, which is sharp enough wide open to help with most extremely dark situations
I also have Neat Video but dont really use it that much unless its a shot that wasat 1600 ISO but is still like 2 stops under exposed. It may be better to just go higher in ISO to expose properly than to under-expose and try to lift in post (in terms of grain)
