  1. Dear all,

I recently bought the Micro Cinema and the Video Assist from BlackMagic.

I also use a GH4, so I tried to record it in ProRes HQ via HDMI on the Video Assist. Everything ok until I went 60 fps.
In that case I had some problems with dropping frames. Of course I use the SanDisk Extreme Pro they suggest.

Have you the same problems? Do you have any suggestion?

    Thank you very much! :)

  2. I had a nice set of FD and I loved them, now I have a set of Contax Zeiss and I find that they are super: better construction, better feeling when you use them, better sharpness at wide open aperture (the FD 50 f/1.4 and the FD 85 f/1.8 where unusable wide open), great color rendition.

The only drawback is the number of blades for the bokeh, most CY have just 6 blades. But wide open they are very close (someone says identical) to Zeiss Primes.

Guys, still don't get it why there is so less footage of the BMMCC out ? Except for 3 or 4 nicely done test footage, there is nothing. If you look at the mini ursa 4.6k you'll find plenty, some are shorts already.

I have it at home, but I have to rig it with the monitor and I don't have a rig, so I'm waiting to buy it in order to shoot something.
Of course I made some test at home, the quality is just awesome, but it takes a little more then my other camera (GH4) to go out and shoot, because it is a part of a bigger system, it is not a DSLM.

Of course I'd love to have a little 3" monitor to just use it as a DSLM for quick work, but I've bought it for the gig where I have some time, not for run and gun situations.

    Same here.

The G7 is almost an impulse buy at only $600 right now at B&H... except I really want (need) to monitor via HDMI while shooting video.

Shooting 4K internally is great... but checking focus on a 3" screen isn't.   :(

A question to all... has anyone tried using a G7 with Panasonic's iPad app? I wonder if the image is good enough for monitoring.

A friend of mine uses his G7 with BlackMagic Video Assist via HDMI and has no problems.

I've sent DNGs to Blackmagic as of 5 minutes ago. Waiting to see what they say. They're not a dealkiller for me as they are pretty faint. Hard to see on a single frame. Motion is what really reveals them. But I can also confirm what Rich101 says. I have similarly exposed shots from the BMPCC that don't exhibit this at all. I went back to check and compare. Even given proper exposure, they reveal themselves in any part of the frame that dips into shadows which is going to be a part of most shots.

I'm optimistic that if BMD can fix the Ursa Mini 4K's "cold start" noise issue (and they have) then they can fix this. If they can't, then I'll likely go back to the Pocket as my A camera and use the Micro for slow motion and more precarious rigging (like car mounts, etc).

    Thank you very much Zak!
Mine just arrived, this evening I'll shoot some test crossing fingers :)

Is this issue visible also in ProRes? Huge thanks for your kind help!

I have both the BMPCC and BMMCC and I do not see the same vertical striations in the my Pocket footage. No trace of it. On the BMMCC it appears in shadow areas (but not in complete black). I rolled a few frames off with the lens cap on and it's not there. Only seems to appear in parts of the frame that register in the neighborhood of 5 to 30 IRE.

Zak, do you think it is something that needs to send the camera back to BM to be fixed?

I don't have a Micro, just a Pocket and as I showed to Blackmagic my footage they told me to send the camera to them, this is to answer to other professors here who know for sure that my camera has not any problem, all judging from a screenshot. Amazing, no, wrong word, ridiculous fit better!

    Thank you Giostrante.

In my humble opinion lots of cameras have issues: the V-Log from GH4 is way noisy in dark environment (in my personal experience, probably some other people will be happy with that), the CineD has some strange color cast on skin tones, but I feel that I have amazing images with that, compared with the Canon 70D I had.

Sony A7s is great in low light but I don't like the final file that much (again, my opinion), the amazing 6300 has this overheating problem...

Every camera has some amazing features and we need to accept compromises in order to have cheap cameras. Or, we need a lot of money for an Alexa ;)

I hope BM could solve all those issue from Pocket, Micro etc... because their files are the most cinematic I see at those prices... (in my opinion they also should give us some better ergonomics... I always say that I love the BM files, but I love also the easiness of use of GH4). Things like ISO, shutter, WB etc... should be easily accessible.

I've recently bought an used BMPCC and discovered this problem too, it's clear at iso 1600 but also at 800 is there.

How can anyone be so calm and quiet about it? It's simply an horrible problem, it destroys the wonderful image this camera can produce in low light, it's a total shame, why nobody is complaining about it? I've just written to BM and ask for a solution, it's unacceptable. People make a lot of noise complaining about things like the old sony a7s black hole sun, or the artificial blu light problem but this is definitely worse!

We all should ask them a serious solution!!

Giostrante, do you have this problem on the Pocket or also on the Micro? I ask, because they should have different sensor, so hopefully the issue could be fixed via FW update.
BlackMagic is a "little" company (compared to Canon, Sony, Panasonic...) and probably they need inputs on problems like those from real world user, but, in my humble opinion, noise or not it is more convenient a BM or a GH4 then a Canon 80...

yes, i have. vertical striations in the shadows.

Zak, in all the shadows or just in severely underexposed images?
I mean: it is something that destroys all images or something acceptable that no one would notice in normal shots?

Right now is clearly visible in dark enviroments with contrasted zone at iso 1600,is still there at 800 but less pronounced, in different conditions is extremely difficoult to find, fortunately. But it's not acceptable anyway.

Here's a little test of the problem, but in still images is less visible than in motion.

    Screen Shot 2016-03-31 at 17.36.18.jpg

That's perfectly acceptable for my taste: with my GH4 I have other issues but they all are things normal (as today) for a digital camera.

This is a very dark shot and it is not very "cinematic" per se: this problem would be unacceptable if it destroy a well exposed (or slightly underexposed) image, but you would not underexpose so hardly normally.

Each camera has pro and cons, I do love my GH4, and I hope the Micro that will arrive today will be as good as the Pocket I had, just with 60 fps and a better batteries' life :)

    my 2 cents :)

Some of the vloggers on youtube are creating some really beautiful content. Some of the travel vlogging is exceptional.

I'm not defending Canon's clear disinterest in the low priced video market... I just don't get why people cry so much... Just go get a Sony.

Maybe because it's a shame that you can have amazing files with 5DkIII and ML (and EOS mount) and they still ignore this...

  11. Dear all,

I'm going to buy the MicroCinema, do you think BM Video Assist is a good option for monitoring or there are some cheaper good solutions (such as Aputure VS1HD or even 30 $ car monitors...)?

    Thank you very much! :)

12mm is pretty wide. I have a speedbooster on it that makes it nearly equivalent to a Super35 sensor, which is a field of view I'm more used to. and I have it rigged like this currently. when i go shoulder mounted the monitor gets rigged to the front with a Noga arm connected to two handles, and a shoulder pad slides onto those rear rods where the monitor is now. whole thing weighs roughly 7lbs and that's a fairly heavy lens on it. it's just enough weight to counter "micro jitters" without making it a beast to lug around.

    wow!! Great!!! thank you!

Amazing cage, follow focus and rig!! i hope I can find something similar here in Italy!

I'm thinking to Video Assist for the monitor, but maybe there are some better choices, like your smallHD one :)

  13. Thank you very much for all your tips!
I think I'm going to buy the Micro Cinema for my personal projects or for shots without rush.

What about external monitor solution? Is the Video Assist the best bet, since it also records 60p? Or there are some cheaper monitor that could be worth to consider?

    Thank you very much!!

just my opinion, but yes, I haven't turned my GH4 on since November when I bought a Pocket. Just finished shooting a short doc with it. And now I have the Micro which I prefer in many ways to the Pocket.  But yes, being that I was always finishing in 2K or 1080p, I don't miss the 4K so much. Would be great to have it all but color and DR come first if I have to choose.

Thank you for your precious advices! I loved your GH4 images, so I think BMMCC have to be something really special!

Next week I'll try to search it!

Do you think the m43 Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 is wide enough with it or I have to search something wider?

How do you rig it with an external monitor?

    Thank you very much!

  14. I loved my Pocket files, but for easiness of use I switched to a GH4.

I tried using Cine-D, V-LogL and Andrew' settings, but I finally find that Natural (with contrast and saturation all the way down) is my cup of tea.
Of course I miss that nice flat profile and now, with MicroCinema (60 fps, better batteries' life etc.) I'm thinking to buy it with a monitor, maybe the Video Assist (or some cheaper that does not record).

Do you think it could be a good choice for a less-digital look or the Sony A6300 (APS-C) with his S-Log is a better option?

Thank you very much for your tips :)

p.s. (I don't want to use any Speedbooster, I have an Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 and a nice set of Zeiss CY)

  15. Dear Andy,
do you think the BlackMagic Video Assist could be a good monitor/recorder for 1080p with G7 / GH4?

Do you know any workaround to have some kind of curves in FCPX??

    Thank you very much! ;)

p.s. (your Natural setting is my goto now! CineD bye bye!)
