  1. Good point, although I do like the aesthetic a LOG profile gives footage if you don't grade too harshly, there is a difference even if, as you say, it's squashed down by LUTS.

Very tough choice, choosing between the A7RII and the A7SII. Video is my main thing, but I take occasional stills. I'm still leaning towards the A7SII, but it's a narrow choice.

  2. Also, you mentioned Slog3 ... did the A7Rii get Slog3? I thought only the A7Sii had it.

    Again ... thanks.

Thanks for the link ... very nice. It certainly does do well in low light. Looking forward to picking one up.

The A7RII doesn't have Slog 3, just Slog 2. Slog 3 has been a bit divisive on the A7SII so you're not missing out on too much.

  3. It should be compared to the A7sII and the FS5 since both can be had for about the same as the SL body, and they both combine weigh about the same and are actually smaller in hand. Ok the last part is sarcasm, but geez this thing looks fat.

    Capture.JPG

The Verge: "The body will be priced at $7,450, while the lens will cost $4,950"

You can get 2.5x A7SII for one of these. It's WAY above the former's price bracket. It's above the FS5. It's even about the same as an FS7.

But don't get me wrong. It could be a really nice all in one solution. But for us video minded folks it's not a huge game changer.

  4. New Leica SL announced.
Mirorless similar to A7S but :

    24mpx  > A7S II
    4K internally and 10 bit 4:2:2 output !!!! > A7x
120FPS in FHD with full frame sensor (no crop like A7SII)  > A7x(if it is clean)
    World fastest AF > A7x
    Touch screen > A7x
    4.4MP EVF with 0.8x magn > A7x
    11 FPS for stills > A7x

If it were not for the price... I would buy it. Of course this are specs and it might be that the image is way less good than A7S II.

Price is way way above the A7s so a bit unfair to compare.

  5. It can't record 4K in crop mode Doug... Greyed out in the menus when mode dial set to movie, and if you enable it in stills mode - yes the live view will show the crop but hit record (when set to 4K XAVC-S) and crop mode will deactivate and you will get full frame.

120fps is an NTSC frame rate. It does 100fps in PAL. You can choose which is best. 120fps will give more flicker and banding with European light sources!

I am not sure why you're not seeing 25fps in 4K...  it does work. Switch to PAL in the menus Doug.

That's what the A7S did over HDMI.

Internally on A7S II, I repeat - it does NOT do 4K with APS-C crop. Sony disabled it. No upscaling. Quality not good enough. If you want to use APS-C lenses or Speed Booster you will need to get the A7R II or try the HDMI... I haven't yet but will do soon to the Odyssey.

Andrew, any gut feelings on the video quality vs the A7RII? Is the inclusion of SLOG3 a real plus? And plenty of folks also noted the A7RII had more pleasing colour science...I know the weather has been awful in Berlin lately but any gut feelings if that slight improvement has made it to the A7SII as well?

  6. It does 25p/100M 4K if you switch to PAL. In NTSC the options are 24p and 30p.
Same with HD. If you want to shoot 100p/100M you have to switch in PAL mode.

APS-C mode does a crop from the 4K sensor. So it will be a upscaled 4K from ... maybe 2800px …

Yeah, I heard a few folks saying the crop mode might be quite soft. Still waiting for a proper in-depth review, these things take time though I guess but I feel like there was way more fuss around the A7RII.

  7. I'm still waiting for the first example of a truly natural grade from the A7sii s-log3. All the graded footage so far looks like the instagram-filter s-log footage I really dislike (ymmv).

For me the natural look is the acid test of a camera's capabilities. Washed out artistic grades hide a multitude of sins.

Not sure if this is natural enough for you, but I found this on Vimeo yesterday and thought it looked really really nice - especially given that the camera has only been out a few days.

  8. OK, to keep confusion to minimum: The opening shots from 0:45 to 11:35 are all shot on the A7S II. The talking heads before and after that are shot on the original A7S.

This might not be an ideally shot and graded video, but we only had production model A7SIIs for the one night and a half hour in the morning. Editing was obviously hurried as cameras are shipping right now. While it may not be our best looking work, I tested everything pretty extensively to make sure all our findings were accurate.

My comment before was probably a little harsh, I really liked the A7RII review you guys put together and look forward to seeing what you guys think after spending some more time with it. I've been to some of these press nights before in other industries and they leave you tired and exhausted so appreciate you guys managing to put together a review.

  9. TBH, I think your corporate video looks great.  well lit, perfectly suited to the company.  clean, tech, etc  your interview shots are really nicely lit,  if anything i felt the only thing that was missing was camera movement-  tripod use throughout I think might be keeping the energy down.  and also exciting b-roll shots.  b roll clips seem a bit long and slow the pace.  A corporate video is only as good as the client/brand and i think you are limited with how interesting you can make something like this look - geeks on computers making kids apps are not as interesting as a flamboyant fashion designer or artist.  If you did exactly the same for Harley Davidson you'd have more visually interesting stuff to fill the b-roll with.  There's nothing on that video that makes me feel like the a7s is at fault, nor the canon zoom, but I think if you went in with just a 50mm/2 summicron and used the ff/aps-c crop for getting wider or tighter framing you'd work differently, you'd have to move around more, and it would express the feeling of multiple camera ops running around.  your zoom is allowing you to set the tripod up then frame which I think is reducing some of the wow due to lack of movement.

Thanks for taking the time to watch, this is really fantastic feedback. The next corporate shoot will almost entirely roaming handheld shots for b-roll which I'm hoping will add a little more dynamism to the footage. I'm also going to do a few test sessions, swapping out the Zeiss with the Canon L lens and see which looks works best.

  10. Interesting idea about the C100. I really, really like the look folks have got from the FS7 but the C100 could be an interesting option. I've used the first one once in a shoot and not had great results though.

To give you guys an example, Google did a developer story at our office. This was the result which, although not great to watch, is pretty beautiful. They used an Arri:

This was my behind the scenes video for an Apple Watch game we put together pretty last minute. My second ever corporate shoot, shot last minute with the A7S. Again, not great to watch, and it looks 'alright' but nowhere near the first video.  Looking to shoot the second video more handheld which should give it a little more energy...

And I know, in hindsight the interviewees were speaking way too fast.

  11. Love this place, thanks for all the help guys. Nick, I'll download that guide you recommended.

The rental price for some Zeiss CP.2 prime lenses aren't too bad. I might use a 85mm and a 35mm for the day. I also have an old vintage lens, not sure if it will resolve enough detail for 4k but I'd love to give it a shot. It's an old 50mm 2.8 Jena lens...plenty of problems with it but always felt it adds a lot of character.

And regarding the rest of the lens conversation, I'm pretty damn unexperienced. Have only done self funded doc work and some corporate shoots. So it's probably right that I have the videographer look going on.

  12.

It'll more than likely be your lens choice rather than the camera that is determining how professional the aesthetic is.  The image jump from the a7s to the fs7 wont be worth the extra expense.  spending the rental costs on some proper lenses, with no zooms, and no canon L series lenses, and particularly not the 24-70! AT ALL will immediately make the image look more professional.  An Amira is all for nothing if the user is fitting canon lenses on there and imparting the look of an everyday news photographer lens set.

The fact that glass hasn't been brought into your criteria is a very clear indicator of where you need to focus your attention IMO.

Thanks for the feedback, this is helpful. I was planning on using the Canon 24-105mm L lens. This is a bad choice because...they lack character? Are overly sharp? Philip Bloom (not the benchmark, just happened to watch his FS7 review to plan) uses Canon L lenses and his footage looks pretty good.

  13. FS7 is nice, but the menu system is pretty bad, and it's not ideal for situations where you're under the gun and have to move fast. The camera has to shut down and reboot to change any major settings. If it's a corporate shoot where you have time to setup for each shot then yeah, I'd say it's a good option.

Cheers, thanks for the advice. The shoot is a sit down interview all set up and with plenty of time, some roaming office shots and broll - so the menu system shouldnt be a problem.

I've never rented a camera before, equipment sure, but not a camera. Likely we should buy our own media, right?

  14. Hey folks.

I'm flying to LA next month to do a corporate BTS shoot. It will be the 3rd one I've done for this company and now I have a pretty open budget. I shot the first two with the Sony A7s, and I was relatively happy with the results but you can still tell it's shot on a lower tier camera. I'd like to give this newer film a more professional aesthetic.

We had folks visit our offices a few months back and shoot on Arri Amira. I can't stretch that far, but was thinking about the Sony FS7. I'd like to shoot in 4K and downscale it to 1080p delivery. Only problem is, I've never used the camera before and am a little nervous about shooting a project with a camera I've never used before. Does anyone have any advice about this?

I've looked at a few video walkthroughs and reviews to get a better idea of how to set it up. I'm a little bit more concerned about equipment.

I'd like to handheld shots, does anyone know if it's useable out of the box?
I guess we'd need to buy XQD cards. Would 128GB be sufficient for about an hour of 4k footage?
Would I be able to lock it down on my Manfrotto tripod? Would I need a new baseplate? Can I screw in my shitty cheap one?

The other option was hiring an Atomos Shogun, but I think we'd also still need to buy media for that. And a rig or cage, I guess, to secure it to the camera. And quality wise, would the FS7 still blow it outta the water?

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

  15. Exactly. And yet I love tons of lenses on different lens mounts, I won't just pick Nikon Ai-s lenses only, or the Canon FDs.. My first vintage lens was the Minolta Rokkor MD 50mm f/1.7. They send it to me with an XG-1 body. Then a 28mm f/2.8 MD as well, followed by Pentax with the Asahi (not Takumar) 50mm f/1.4 which to this day has one of my favorite looks! Then a rollercoaster ride with all the Zenit lenses in M39/M42 mount. Bunch of other stray cats wanting to get adopted. No one mount or brand in particular... to me it really is not about the mount, it's all about the glass and look.

That Minolta 1.7 lens was my first vintage lens as well, it's lovely. One of the biggest temptations with the new Sony cameras is that IBIS so I can use old lenses handheld.

  16. because no one has the camera till Friday? Once it's shipping, there will be a hundred reviews

I thought Sony shipped review units, like how Cinema5D got their hands on the A7RII pretty early and posted lots of video impressions. Very curious about it overheating, the colour and how SLOG3 holds up.
