I don't know what the point of this brand war is on this topic.

If you want to spend money on a 1DC, go ahead. If you want to spend money on an A7S, go ahead. Buy whatever you want. Like whatever image you want. But don't bash each other in a war... it's just boring.

I have my own preference for gear, and I'll give constructive advice to anyone. I might buy an A7S, because it has features I would benefit from creatively. "But what about the 1DC, it's great in low light!!??" Personally I don't have the cash for a 1DC, and besides, I couldn't justify the purchase if I did. The A7S would be fine, and I'd have much more money left for LENSES.

My point being... instead of arguing, shouldn't those doing it speak more constructively about their choices and show examples of their work where the features of the "brand" has influenced the piece?

2 C shaped felt lined shims (or split ring) to go round the anamorphic, would be better to clamp the anamorphic and then the screws could screw into them, rather than scratching the gold ana' but it would also benefit from some sort of bayonet to attach the rest to.

Assuming that the production model of the FM lens operates in the same way as the early installation video, the FM lens needs to grip to the anamorphic lens inside, then the exposed rear area of that lens is clamped by a support ring...which is then attached to rails.

I'm sure Anamorphicshop has a nice solution yet to come - that can reduce the internal diameter clamp via a collar or something to allow the use of smaller anamorphics (sub 71mm), but in the mean time - here is a 'Ghetto' solution.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321033449391?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Yep, exhaust pipe is the right diameter to match the exterior diameter of the ES cinelux that the FM lens looks optimised for. The stainless steel tube also has a nice and thin wall thickness to allow maximum space to accommodate any smaller anamorphic, providing it is packed in there with soft padding.

This could be a decent temporary solution to those wanting to try alternative lenses for testing, until they release a proper internal reduction collar or whatever they have planned.

You must have very low confidence in your own ability to come out with this stuff.

My clients don't come to me because of my secret tools. They come to me because I put much emphasis into the ideas and for my very stylised, visual style. They come to me for MY vision and how I apply that vision. My tool selection is just an ingredient of that vision.

People who work with me share information, talk to each other, borrow stuff, debate, exchange skills, ask for advice - because we are collaborators who have strengths and weaknesses, and we help each other to make better stuff. This is simple, basic networking - you never know who you will need in future!

I have no issues writing a blog post telling the whole wide world of amateurs and professionals about my entire music video production structure - from style to logistics. I'll be happy sharing because they will never have the same vision as me, and most importantly they may have something to share too which I can learn from and apply.

The secret sauce is your very self. Your ideas, your style, your personality, your skill, your results - it is this that clients buy. Have confidence in this and what everyone else is doing doesn't matter.

If nobody shared, nobody cared ;)

In another topic about Canon's succes but failing to innovate, I wrote this post. I think it deserves it's own discussion. And it was pretty off-topic anyway.
    --------------------------------

Most people don't spend days and days on the internet and websites like EosHD to compare specs and numbers. They go crazy even thinking about it.

They go to the nearest camera shop, ask for advice and try something out. Of course the seller says 'here is the Canon 7D, a great camera which we sell all the time'. The customer holds it (feels great!), trusts the brand and the seller, and walks out with the camera. Maybe he looks online for the best possible deal and have it send to him, but he's buying a 7D nonetheless.

And that is why Canon is still market leader, and will be for a while. Why do big film studios sometimes use a 5D or a 7D, but never a Panasonic? Because they feel like a toy, have no reputation, different color science, etc.

Canon is still the brand to get for everone who is not a nerd like us and spends much of their time on comparing camera's and specs. And the same goes for computers, TV's, car's, etc. People just want to buy something which feels good in the hand, looks good, has a good reputation and is recommended by others / sellers.
And that is why people still buy overpriced iMacs, 5D's, Samsung TV's with digital sharpening and 200 hz modes, etc.

But I will say once more, THAT IS PERFECT FOR US. Stop spreading the word! I tell you this is important!

Some, like me, make money from shooting video's... Most of us, like me, coulnd't have started this business 10 years ago because of the crappy quality of affordable camera's and computers. Now, everyone with 2000 dollars / euro's to spare can buy a GH4 + lens, download Premiere from torrents, make a simple wordpress website and call himself 'film producer'. Everyday more and more 'competitors' join our market.

And we all know that in 5-10 years there will be self composing, 10 bit 8K camera's with 20 stops DR that will focus themselves for 800 euro's in Wallmart... You know what this means for us 'professionals'? It means that you will have 10x more competitors than you have now.
Throw some 'self editing software' in the mix and there you go, almost everyone becomes a video maker.

Of course I am exaggerating, but I really believe we should all shut up and keep our secrets. I have learned a lot from the online community and I have given lots of knowledge back in the past, but I am not doing it anymore.
I want my clients to look at my footage and say 'wow that looks better than the rest' and book me. And of course composition and editing have to do with it, but the camera plays a big part in it as well.

So if you want to still make money in the (near) future, stop spreading the word about Sony and Panasonic. Stop talking about Filmconvert and explaining everything to people. Stop making easy tutorials for everyone to see.

Do you want a future where everyone makes video's which are as good (looking) as yours?

We are making it too easy for beginners like this. We are literally raising competitors which will hunt us in the future.

I have stopped and I ask you to do the same.

Praise Canon 5D's! Praise pricey software. Never give any tips and tricks for free. That is how you get rich.

No, in other words: 'you pays your money, you takes your choice'.

It was pretty clear on the earlier announcements that the rail setup was for illustration purposes, I sometimes wonder if people read the facts before posting nonsense.

Think it's a good time for people to remember that these Anamorphicshop people are not a Sony or Samsung sized company, so give them a break and some credit for releasing something that is a great deal for many on this forum. If you don't want one because the price is a too high or it's too 'new' or expected that it should come with a lifetime warranty and a box or complimentary chocolates - guess what...you don't have to buy one.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, everybody wins....FM buyer or not.
If you have a dual or fixed focus lens that is sub 70.1mm diameter in your collection, the future re-sale value is probably now more assured with them being compatible with this single focus module.

He has to be careful with the warranty thing. Here's how it works in the UK for example:

So actually you are able to chase anyone even after many years saying the product should have lasted longer and the fault is not due to natural wear & tear.

    Couple of thoughts:
I hang around in a few high volume forums that aren't as technical as us (including a deals site and a couple of general tech forums) and the prevailing mentality is that Canon video is #1. So as long as people keep on buying their cameras in large quantities, along with pros padding the profit margins with the Cinema EOS line, Canon will say, why do we have to change anything?

The other thing is that Canon, like most companies, don't like bad vibes. They won't tell you anything that makes them look bad, hence the silence.

I think we should be happy that 'the masses' are still buying Canon because it is 'the brand to get'.
We, as enthusiasts and some even professionals, earn their living with shooting video's. I'm so happy that 80% of video shooters still shoot 720p on their Canon 7D / 5D. Why? Because my GH3 looks amazing compared to it. And my clients go 'ooeh' and 'aah' when they see my footage. Of course it is composition, grading, talent, etc. But the camera is also important.

So I say, stop spreading the word about Canon camera's being shitty. You gain nothing from it, but you take the edge, of us video makers who spent lots of time selecting the best gear carefully, away.

Buy Canon folks! Great reliable gear! Never had any problems with them!

Furthermore, even though your articule is spot on Andrew, it accomplishes nothing. It's like asking Sony why they don't release a Mac Pro competitor for less money. Clearly there is no interest from Canon in this market. But also, they will still sell the most camera's for years and years to come. And you should buy a Canon, because they are great!

i dont know what you are using the mark3 for but i have an unhappy experience to tell you about the sony A7s,

a photographer & videographer went to shoot with it at a wedding and the couple complained to him that his equipment was not "proffesional" and they had a fight at the wedding because of the small size....!
i know it sounds crazy the camera is great, but from a commercial standpoint you need the large DSLR  too..
people are still backwards when it comes to equipment.

Very good summary indeed, i would add also:

The 5D has up to 38 fps raw at unstretched 1080p (recorded time is limited to couple of seconds though due to buffer and card speed)
The 5D has up to 65 fps raw 1920x672 (nicely stretches to 1080p but also limited time) and gives better quality than 1080p h264 30 or 24/25p
The 5D has 48 fps raw at 1920x508 (like above but with 2,35:1 aspect ratio)  - can record almost continously

Very nice new tools (much improved in last months) for on site checking and one click processing raw like MLVrawviewer (mlv to prores).

The 5D has DUAL ISO raw recording option (stills and video, normal and crop), can record for example iso 100 (for highlights) and iso 1600 (for shadows) in the same time, there are some image issues like aliasing in over/under exposed areas (but no motion ghosting) but when needed it can give 14 stops of DR

The 5D has HDR video (h264 and raw) - when shooting in 48 or 50 fps it alternates ISO values between frames, no aliasing but motion artifacts so mostly for static shots

The 5D has auto ETTR (very useful for setting exposure fast) - it sets exposure to the right in one button click

All of the features above are from Magic Lantern of course, not from canon.

you should have a very narrow dof with the anamorphic on the front too - try some close up Sergio Leone style face shots with it
