What's the point of the big bad screen on the back of the Pocket then?

They may as well have left it off.

It sucks up power and doesn't point in the direction you need it to, and you can barely see it in sun light.

Of course, nobody in Blackmagic pointed this out to the design team!

Nevermind what's the point of the screen - what's the point of the camera? So many people seem to complain about it for what it can't do or why it's not the camera they want it should never have been released.

It would probably just be easier to add ProResRAW internal recording to E-M1X or future GH6 :)

40 minutes at best and sometimes camera turns off at 50% so hardly reliable

YES to that. Where is a new Ninja Star?! If they can power it via USB C with no need for Canon LP, even better. Modern chips very efficient and at same time powerful.

I get 40 mins with 10 year old LP-E6 batteries.  New LP-E6n on the latest firmware will run an hour by all accounts. Even 40 mins isn't that bad if you have a stash of batteries.

I've just discovered the secret to success in this industry -- be very critical of the image made by any camera other than Alexa, and you are instantly a top notch dp in the class of Roger Deakins.

Here is a list of terms to help your complaints sound more legit:

    • Lacks DR (dynamic range)
    • Poor highlight roll off
    • Contrasty
    • Not contrasty
    • Bad motion cadence
    • Too digital
    • Too flat
    • Plasticy
    • Too noisy
    • Too clean
    • Poor focus roll off
    • Macro blocking
    • Micro jitters
    • Sucky suck suck

Now, if those alone aren't getting you the status you deserve, try these ones. They almost sound made up, but no one will ever question you and will repeat them until they become an actual thing.

    • Sharpening halos
    • Pixel fringing
    • Quasar vignette
    • Noise population ratio
    • Telecentric converters

And if you find you need to take it even further, take a screenshot of footage that you put zero production value in, like a chair in a poorly lit office, magnify 300 percent, and then... wait for it......... wait for it......... draw a friggin arrow to the pixel in question.

I'll have plenty more suggestions in my upcoming mzed class...

Seriously, there is a clear world of difference between being a negative Nelly and simply recognizing a camera's pros and cons. ALL CAMERAS have pros and cons. Looking at them in those terms is about making decisions and problem solving , not complaining.

You are forgetting 'not as good as the camera it replaced'

He was using ISO1250 plus Braw.
So basically no highlight dr + plasticky skin.

By this video it actually is.
But seems like Matteo ignores any trick anyway:

    • shooting cDNG instead of Braw
    • avoid shooting at ISO1250 in contrasty situations
    • grading in another colorspace like ARRI log C or IPP2 for way nicer roll-off (RCM)

If he's shooting at 1250 ISO then he's loosing a stop of DR as it's the higher gain setting but using either CDNG or BRAW the ISO setting in either range shouldn't make a difference as it's just a metadata tag and is not changing the data like it is in ProRes where it's baked. So I presume you mean avoid using the higher gain setting in contrasty situations.

but on mobile phone Alexa is still beautiful, it really is not a small screen ?

I had a P4K loan to make sure it's just not that and it's worse for me than old sensors ?

and I don't think I have this opinion myself

Yes I must change my HDR 4k reference monitor for a mobile phone when grading. :)

The BMPCC looks different to the P4k for sure and you may for various reason prefer that look but it certainly isn't 'technicaly' better in any measurable way.

Highlight Roll Off P4K is terrible ?  (and I'm watching it on my cell phone, no big screen!)  the dynamic range is visibly worse than the old BM

and it is unnecessarily contrasting in skin tones.  I won't sell my old BM!

    until the Fairchild sensor returns!

I haven't liked anything from the new p4k so far, and unfortunately it will remain so.

The best thing you can do is buy a BMMCC for a few dollars second hand

As someone who owns the BMPCC and the P4k I can tell you the highlight roll-off is not terrible on the P4k nor is the DR worse than the BMPCC nor are skintones unnecessarily contrasty - but what do I know as I'm not looking at it via youtube on a cellphone?

What is your opinion about this?

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1443625-REG/angelbird_mp_pcc4k_512ek256c_match_pack_for_blackmagic.html

I already own a T5 512GB and I will probably order another CFast Sandisk 128GB and probably a fast SD card.

What is the maximum bitrate i can shoot with those, and are those enough for a full day of docu work?

and this as a NPF solution? https://cvp.com/product/hawk-woods-dv-bm4-power-adaptor

CFast is expensive for data so why not just get a 1TB T5 ? I've got a few external battery solutions but the best by far (and the cheapest)is a cheap NPF sled with a dummy battery from amazon/ebay. I  shortened the power lead to tidy it up and mounted the sled to the top of a smallrig 1/2 cage. With a generic F970 battery I get 2.5 hours recording time when writing to the external T5.

Agree, it's no comparison to cDNG at 4:1 even in terms of detail/texture and lack of processing artifacts.
At least people over in the official BMD forum are complaining as well and demanding for no noise reduction/sharpening setting available.

This examples specifically doesn't show any sharpening halos. You need areas strong in contrast to see it.
Just download some Braw/ProRes footage from the comment section of the video and look at what happens between her skin and jacket, and also how it renders hair...yikes.

I've downloaded the files and have them in a UHD timeline in Resolve Studio  outputting to a 27"  HDR UHD monitor via decklink  - I can't see anything  (and I'm looking really hard with a critical eye used to identifying all kinds of artefacts) and I'm seeing nothing, absolutely nothing that I am worried about. What setup are you viewing these files on?

    Here's an example
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Z1obV0aGFIf6iDajr9ScTdIoApVOMOSn/view

Q0 looks better but still cannot compete with cDNG. cDNG at 4:1 may show macro blocking though when pushed too hard. But at 3:1 it's usually clean.

Is that a full frame in the vertical crop? It looks very underexposed so we are seeing the differences in the shadows where the most 'NR' seems to happen. I still can't see any 'sharpening halos.

  8. 1 hour ago, deezid said:

It looks basically exactly the same lol
    Same fringing
    same sharpening halos
    same noise reduction

Again show us this in your footage  as I'm just not seeing it in mine. OK at 600% I can see a bit of color aliasing but apart from that for a 1:1 sampling sensor it's remarkably clean. Resolve can have some unpleasant image display artefacts under some of the user options for playback settings where you can trade playback speed for quality but I guess you know this?

  9. 4 hours ago, deezid said:

Not that the P4K looks bad, but these sharpening halos (easiliy visible in the thumbnail around the jacket even) make the P4K look way less organic than the original BMCC.

Was shot in either ProRes or Braw. Cdng doesn't show any of these internal processing issues when sharpening in Resolve is set to 0. Still wondering why BMD joined Panasonic, Sony, Canon (since EOS R) etc...

I don't see any 'sharpening halos' on this video or my own BRAW footage - can you post some samples to show this please?

It might be a nice occasion to compare results of two generations of BM cameras from the same master's DP signature. For me, very hard to judge...

What's with the cyan cast on the 2nd video?

  10. 4 hours ago, Emanuel said:

You should include CinemaDNG as well.

    Yet more crystal clear:

DNG 'looks' like it has sharpening applied with it's overly emphasised edges. Anyway who looks at a film at 300% an come to think of it who look at a film at 100%??? 'sharpness' is not the reason to choose BRAW anyway. Having the post production flexibility of not having and ISO curve and WB baked in is a bigger advantage than apparent 'sharpness' gains at 300%.

Yeah, I am not a good clicker!

I have some big decisions to take the next couple of days (1. full set of lenses for whatever camera system - split between E and EF at the moment, probably EF+P4K 2. Led lights 3. "Huge" backpack 4. Flowtech FSB4/Ace/GH06 5. 360 camera 6. Big investmemt in sound 7. Logo/site e.t.c e.t.c) so I am missing a lot of the smaller things at the moment!

Thank you guys keeping me inline, true e-pals!

I'm just about to take delivery of a GH06 head so I'll test it against my FSB4 for you.

On my GH5 with the Metabones 0.67XL speedbooster, both the Sigma 18-35, and the Tokina 11-16 vignette a lot on the wide ends.

Dunno how different the BM 4K Pocket would be...

The BM 4k pocket has a bigger sensor so it would be worse. 0.71 is the reducer you need for APS-C lenses.

That’s actually the beauty of Yashica ML lenses... for such cheap lenses, they have a rich history. Read up on them to find their inherent connection to Contax Zeiss lenses... some Yashica lenses probably have Zeiss glass in them.

I do know about Yashica and it’s (inferior)  relation Ziess - hence my comment about why would anyone want to use them on a 6k sensor?

  14. 6 hours ago, enny said:

Are Yashica ml lenses full frame as in full frame that can be used on full frame video cameras like kinemini 6k LF thanks

They will cover the frame but why choose such cheap lenses for such a good sensor?

Do NPF batteries/plates provide enough volts to power the camera through the external power port? I remember reading in the manual that it requires more than using an internal dummy battery. I would give it a check to make sure we're not missing anything.

    Screenshot 2019-03-16 at 11.06.43.png

You need a version of the NPF sled with a transformer built in to step up the voltage.
