Hello everyone! Few days ago I finished editing my last short timelapse video. I put a ton of work into this (shot last year, edited in 9 months, just because I couldn't focus on in completely). Edited in ACR and Premiere Pro. Opening title in AE.
Please read the video's description for camera info. Almost every shot is done in silent/electronic shutter mode, works like a charm for timelapses. I have some complaints about camera, I'll post it if anyone will be interested, but other than that, it is a great little tool!

nib187 reacted to Julian in GH4 new 4K photo mode firmware in anamorphic 1.75x quick test
It's very easy to spot if you know what to look for: look at the bokeh (background blur). Instead of circles the highlights form ovals. But you can even see it in the general shape of the blur, it gives a very different look. It is kind of 'stretched', imo it gives a painting like look to a picture. To me this is much more important than the anamorphic flares.

The shot with the scooter doesn't look very anamorphic (except for the aspect ratio) - because everything is in focus and also it's been shot with a 1.33x anamorphic, that doesn't give such a pronounced effect as the 1.75x or 2x anamorphics.

Ok guys, can anyone explain me how to tell a difference between anamorphic and non-anamorphic shot, when there isn't any lens flare? Do you really know when something was shot with anamorphic optics? (I'm not against it, I just don't have experience)

I agree, but TN really is a dealbreaker imo.

The Dell screen you really have to use with dpi scaling. Works fine on Mac OS. Not very good on Windows. For viewing 4K content it'll be still great though.

The 4K options are still a bit limited right now. Personally I'm interested in 21:9. The LG 34UM95 is a great screen (34" @ 3440x1440, IPS, around €900,-), Ive used it for a while.

You might think 34" is huge and you end up with a low pixel pitch, but that's not really the case. Can't compare it to 16:9 monitors. In height the screen is not even as big as a 27", it's just wide! Which is absolutely great to work with....

    C300 and 1D C drop $2000

This is an interesting move by Canon. The 1D C I expected really to drop further in price because of intense competition from Panasonic and Sony at much lower prices. The C300 however has been selling very well but now apparently Canon want to shift stock faster. Is this to make way for a replacement? Based on specs alone it is certainly due one. Based on the real world and how this camera has been accepted by videographers and filmmakers, people seem pretty happy with what they have!

nib187 reacted to Quirky in EOSHD Filmic Compositions - New music service launching soon!
In fairness' sake, if one uses a licenced track from the Music Bed, Triple Scoop, etc, the video is not automatically going to get flagged and banned, is it. It's just a risk, because of the dodgy filtering system, which may or may not distribute false flags.

Other than that, so far so good, the soundtrack sounds interesting, and so does the project, so far.

The prices will start at 20 bucks. The price will be same for both videomakers and pedantic 'what if' people alike.  ;)
If you suspect your piece might make money later, buy a pricier, or another licence for another edit. Surely there's not much point in worrying about every possible scenario beforehand. Especially now, as he said,

    So be patient.  :)

Meanwhile, use the policies of the aforementioned royalty free music delivery services as a general guideline. When in doubt, ask the provider for a quote, or buy a pricier license. In this case, the money is going to support independent music makers (and EOSHD:) directly. Support your indie artists, people, be it a musician, filmmaker, graphical artist, app developer or whatever. That's us supporting each other.

Just to clarify what I said above, the footage was shot at 4K on the GH4 but recorded to the Ninja as 1080p. I have no idea if you will get superior results recording 10-bit/422 4K to a Shogun and then downsampling in post. I don't see why you would really.

Doesn't downsampling via the Ninja just simplify the workflow? Is it possible that the big wait for the Shogun will be a bit pointless if you're going to be downsampling to HD in post anyway?! Personally I'd rather have a Ninja Star in my pocket than a Shogun on top of my GH4 ...

Historically, C and N had made most of their money with cheap plastic bodies. No real innovation? Even better, as long as the people during the DSLR boom were running for overaged technology, there was no need for expensive - and maybe risky -  innovation. It was a winning team. Sensor and chip producing is about quantity, mass production, 'quantity even having its own quality', to paraphrase Stalin. Run as long the casting moulds will allow to form the plastic and if worn out, make a relaunch of the same stuff with a slightly different design. A lot of, maybe even most of the customers would even never ever chance their kit lense...
For a good reason, because a lot of them would not distinguish the difference between bad and good glass, at least not in their own pictures with the artificial boosted oversaturation.
How many really good photogs did you know? :-)

As said, most people never ever even touch the movie recording button.

How many Cine Cams did C sell in comparsion? Did you know one personally who own one? Why not?
An expensive tool, and if not needed everyday it's better to rent one. What profs would do.

    Art is expression.
Don't tell me you can't communicate with your D5H4  or whatever.
It's not the gear nowadays.Look at the sh1t quality of tv. Not even full HD. And thanks God that is the standard.
YOU see the difference, but not your customer if you could make him proud with your footage.
It's all about emotion, the story you want to tell.

Yes, a certain camera brand is like a love affair... Yeah, I know: the endless hours, the experience,  the hard work, to get exactly this look. The search for a lense which could transport exactly that feeling. And oh, why they did not hear me?
Get rich of it, if she/he don't listen. The only lingo they understand is money. They are stupid, ugly ****  - they did not deserve you.

If you really need a cine cam today, rent one. Or steal one. To expensive, to dangerous? Then you did not need one probably.
In history, film has always been one of the very most innovative trades. Like war.

The innovation must come from you, not out of the box.

If you don't make it now, it would not happen. You want this fcking cinecam? Earn it.

nib187 reacted to Andrew Reid in EOSHS forum should be re-named GH4HS
A lot of people are viewing the GH4 4K material on 2.5K or 1080p displays and there's crude downscaling going on which results in an over-sharp image and even some heavy aliasing. A lot of the YouTube stuff looks thin and sharp because of compression and bad downscaling.
First time I graded the GH4 files I was pretty happy and yet we've only realised half the camera's potential so far. Once we get the Atomos Shogun we will be getting uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2 4K out of the HDMI port. DXOMark tested the raw output GX7's sensor (similar to the one in the GH4) and it rates for about 11.8 stops dynamic range, pretty much identical to the 5D Mark III.

The GH2 and 5D2 have been around for ages and the GH4 is a far bigger step up from the GH2 than the 5D3 is from the Mk II.

Michael - ignorance of the reason other people choose to shoot with the GH4 does not make a good debate. Also remember that the filmmaking world is small and you are using your real name on the forum, if you piss someone off, eventually it will come back round. There's no career advantage to behaving like a complete prat in front of half the digital filmmaking community.

Jason, I'm not trying to pick on you here... but for a few years now you've posted here on EOSHD, dvxuser, cinema 5d and I don't know where else purely on one subject matter... and that has been an absolutely obsessive compulsive whirlwind of posts on which camera to get and which is most "filmic". This has gone on for years now.

You bought the 60D, was too soft.. wanted the GH3, it was too much like "video", bought the 5D, and have made endless posts commenting on how the 5D with raw blows the socks off everything out there. Am I right in saying that you never actually even tried 5d raw? Then you say the GH4 is too much like video and much prefer the 5D image... but you're now wanting to sell the 5D to buy something else? This is absolutely crazy. You're a novice with an ultra expensive toy, who just isn't satisfied with image quality.

If you were spending endless hours filming and doing tests and actually using your camera, then at least there would be some reason to the madness. But the only video you've uploaded is a handheld point and shoot clip of the 5D that shows no understanding of filming or photography. You've been too busy obsessing with which is the best camera to get. The truth is that no matter the camera you buy, your videos will look horrible. Why? Because all of your energy is focussed purely on comparison without actually shooting or trying things for yourself. You're just judging the uploads of others.

Myself and many others have been very tactful in telling you how to get your "film look", but you insist on believing otherwise. Are your friends not tired of seeing the endless camera comparisons you're showing them. Don't they ever ask to see some work you've done? Stop stating with such confidence how things are, and which camera produces the better image. Start being less opinionated on both cameras and the "hollywood look" as you've referred to it as - and start actually learning some real technique from this forum. You have a great camera. Stop wasting your time, read the manual and start using it already. This forum has a wealth of knowledge that no film school could offer. Use it. And please stop wasting your money on endless camera body upgrades. The A7s won't be perfect either, no camera ever will.

I'm sorry if this has come across aggressively, but just look over the last couple of years of posts you've made reiterating the same obsession, without having actually gotten your hands dirty. Please, for your own sake start focussing on something else. ( i.e: focus on shooting rather than which camera is best )

I had my GH4 with me Friday night at a concert and shot some semi low light footage. Most shots are C4K scaled to HD with a 2.35:1 crop. A few shots are FHD 60p slowed down. Shot in Cinelike D -5,-5,-5,-5. Graded with FilmConvert. You might see a few strobing lights due to dimmed LED's on stage. It showed up no matter what shutter speed I used. Overall I'm loving it.
