  1. Tomorrow is the premier of GH5. The camera will be in stores later in spring. They are making final adjustments for FW. I hope the GH5 will have:

-auto iso in M with EC for photos and video

-auto iso and shutter speed limit for photos and video

-showing exposure values in all video modes

-semi-auto exposure mode for video. Exposure, focus and AWB sets when starting the video and then stays unchanged. Canceled by pressing AE-lock.

    -separate AE-lock, AF-lock and WB-lock (FN-buttons)

    -all menu items for FN-buttons

-during dialing iso should not block seeing other values

-AF+MF should work all the time when ON. (not only with half press)

-manual focus shift (focus pull) via FN-buttons with adjustable speed

-EV comp and video buttons programmable for FN use.

    -adjustable EVF sharpness

    -EVF protecting cover

-sensor zooming or different crops for 4k video

-more accurate and wider histogram with better warnings (like in Olympus)

-My menu for favorite menu items

-symbol for idynamic and wind filter in displays

-ability to save the whole camera setup with names like indoors, outdoors, etc

    -more range for bracketing (-2,0,+2)

-play button to right side via FN-button

    -iso100 for video

-no need for using everything in manual if using very slow shutter for video (less than 1/25s)

These are little things and mostly doable with FW programming.

Interesting you mention that because all way non-scientific tests I have done seem to indicate ISO 200 is just better than ISO 400.

I do not think contrast and iDynamic will change the charts.  Contrast just rearranges the luminance values it gets from the sensor it does not get any new information.  IDynamic changes the local contrast of the darks which would cause the horizontal lines on the scope to be angled.

See for instance this article about iDynamic:

    http://www.dvinfo.net/article/production/panasonic-gh4-dr-and-gamma-timelapse-and-more.html

    And here is a comparison:

    CDM-iDynHigh.jpg

Idynamic standard/high are too extreme. Low setting digs shadows a little without too much visible noise at iso200. Normally with contrast 0 the darkest shades are so near black that they visibly blend to black if not adjusted in post.

While all cameras record different tints they are all consistent with decreasing luminance values, except for the G85 which goes from some yellowish/orange to green

The Sony looks very impressive especially price/performance wise!

It would be interesting to find out how well the GH5 is going to compare to the Sony.

If using iso200, Natural contrast -5 and idynamic low the GH4 dark bars would be much more visible. Iso200 is GH4 native iso! Iso400 is blurred by NR.

I wonder why there is a soft flare around the brightest bar in G85. Is the lens same as in GH4?

@Vesku The G85 does not clip highlights more. Is greater dynamic range what's holding you back from creating your masterpiece? All you seem interested in is tests.

Thanks for confirming DR. I shooted some New Year fireworks and night city scenes with my GH4 and it clipped too much bright lights. I dont want to update worse than GH4. Noise was not an issue with GH4 but the dyn range was in that difficult light.

In Andrews G85 review GH4 has better highlights in iso1600 candle examples.

  5. AE-lock button seems to bee much closer to thumb in GH5 than in GH4. It is good because it is difficult to use back button focusing in GH4. It needs too much thumb movement and the video shakes easily. I hope is will be possible to program separate AF and AE lock and maybe even WB lock.

And having the playback button on the right side instead of the left -what a brilliant idea! .

GH2 had it in right side. Why they moved it to left in GH3 and GH4 ??

I hope the playback is at least a FN-button option in GH5. I hope also that video button and useless EV-button will be programmable.

  7. I hope GH5 has not some GH4 limitations and bad design.

-video exposure limitations, I want to see what exposure values I use.

-limitations in FN options, I want to customize the camera for my needs.

GH5 3.7 million dots EVF would be very helpful for seeing focus.

    GH4:       2359k dots OLED EVF 0,67 magnification

GH5:       3680k dots OLED EVF 0,76 magnification (much bigger than GH4)

E-M1 II:  2360k dots OLED EVF 0,74 magnification

Other tests: in addition to the focus one, a test to see if you can punch in with manual focus while recording - or is that just a feature check?

Can you program slow focus pulls?

It would be nice to shift focus slowly different speeds by pressing FN-buttons.

@Vesku are you prepared to spend upwards of $2000.000 USD to upgrade from the GH4?  And what if the dynamic range, continuous focus and low light performance were no better than the G85? Excessive noise reduction, oversharpening to the point of destroying detail? Come on, you've been going on about this forever, I'm on your side now. ???

GH5 will have full sensor down sampled 4k video. It will be cleaner than previous models, something like Sony A6500. GH4 JPGs from RAW are so good that with enough processing power even the GH4 sensor is good enough for brilliant video. Continuous AF in video should also be much better with more processing power. At 4k 60P the AF is faster because the camera gets 60 samples/second to compare contrast. I hope they give an updated (sharper) EVF and some fixes for usability.

I think it will be $2500 in Finland. It really must be much better than GH4.

  11. It is strange and even funny how every brand has some major faults in their consumer camera video features.

Sony has no single focus, difficult menus and overheating.

Panasonic is not showing exposure info, has useless AFC and has limitation in customation and exposure options.

Canon has good colors but poor resolution and dynamic range

Olympus has poor video quality and handling issues.

I hope the GH5 will be the first making most things right.

  12. I hope the GH5 will have all the basic exposure features a modern camera should have. Not unnecessary limitations.

I also hope they add proper ergonomics custom options for video (Function button options for video menu items).

6k photo should have AFS and better NR (compared to GH4).
