I think what Vesku is trying to say is that there aren't any demonstrations of the advantages of ALL-I over IPB, just talk. But you can't really prove anything by uploading to YT, since it's no longer ALL-I. I think the answer is, if you've got the GH5, just try shooting with it and editing it yourself.

I think I will not use 400Mbs. I am just curious if someone can show the benefits.

The IQ difference should be easy to show with heavily graded and enlarged YT examples. If not why use 400Mbs for better IQ.

If shooting just normal 8bit 4k it was a surprise that GH5 60P has better IQ than 30P (less compression artifacts and macro blocking).

@Vesku I can’t, and I’d like to do a double blind test with those who believe otherwise. All this motion cadence talk makes me fall on the floor doubled over with laughter!

This is from Andrews GH5 FW 2.0 review

"With an ALL-I H.264 codec we get closer to true 24 frames per second like the look of film, and reduce the digitalisation of motion cadence.......An interframe LongGOP IPB codec saves space but it screws with motion in quite subliminal and subtle ways. The ALL-I codec on the GH5 2.0 has no trickery or frame-prediction, just pure cinema 24p."

I wonder too what is that motion cadence and how we can see the difference. When I watch GH5 ipb stopped frames, normal speed and reduced speed I cant see any bad things in video or frames. Even the moving water or waves looks convincing and normal. I can see all-i/ipb small differences on moving water when I watch 200-400% enlargement in 65 inch 4k TV and watching very close.

  3. My future hopes are:

-the camera must show exposure values (ss, A, iso) in all video modes.
-AFS/AFC/MF lever should work with video.
-the red recording dot should be constantly red, not blinking slowly and more center of the screen. It is now difficult to see if the recording is on or off.
-EVF should have sharpening setting (easier to monitor focus).
-video autofocus menu item on/off should be assignable to FN-button (if the AFS/AFC lever will be impossible to work with video)
-iDynamic and wind cut filter should have symbol in screen (GH2 had those).
-when changing iso only the back wheel works. It would be easier for use front wheel for iso adjustment when my front finger already has pressed the iso button and is near the front wheel. Why not both wheels adjust iso?
-AFS should work with 4k/6k photo

  4. Generally I frame the video when shooting and GH5 has so good stabilization that there is not so much need for post stab. In most cases I would prefer more resolution with 16:9 than reduced resolution and unnecessary pixels with 4:3. The heavily compressed video would be better for 16:9 if the camera would not waste bitrate for extra height of 4:3.

In future I will have a computer playing 5.2k HEVC smoothly and the 16:9 5.2k video mode would also be sensible when 8k 16:9 screens will come. Much better than 4k. Panasonic should add 16:9 5.2k mode too because it is possible and the most obvious hi-res mode to have. It needs no down sampling, just cropping a little already existing 3:2 6k photo mode. Anamorphic is just an "extra" feature.

How about this open gate down sampled 4.99k 4:3 video. Has it more moire or aliasing compared to 1:1 sensor modes (6k photo)? GH5 down sampled 4k seems to have very little moire.

  5. Everyone with GH5 can test this HEVC by shooting some 6k photo files. It makes the same 200Mbs 10bit HEVC mp4 file than the new open gate mode. It is though 30P. When selecting 3:2 ratio the video has resolution 5184 x 3456. The new graphics cards for example NVIDIA 1060, 1070 etc should play HEVC files up to 8k. Can someone test it in practise.

By the way GH5 has power to play these HEVC files smoothly.

  6. Normally I copy my files instantly to home computer and format my card. I can check all these and many more parameters with Exiftool program and see how these settings look in the big screen.

It is odd that the GH5 shows all that information with play-menu but it cant show shutter speed, aperture and iso when shooting.

I think you already know the answer to your HEVC question. Griffin Hammond explained to Photo Joseph during a series of lengthy interviews why Panasonic chose not to include H265. This video was posted in a GH5 thread a long while ago. May I ask under what circumstances you'd want to trigger the IS lock during recording?  I'm also curious why anyone would shoot video using aperture priority...

The shooting situation may change from following/panning to stationary and wice versa. It would be nice to freeze/un freeze the IS then without stopping the recording. One Canon camcorder has this freeze-button and it works during recording.

I use aperture priority almost always outdoors. Indoors I use fixed shutter speed (1/50s in europe) and auto iso. It would be nice to see shutter speed outdoors and auto iso reading indoors. Fortunately GH5 has finally auto iso limiter also for video so my iso wont go crazy high. Auto iso limiter should have more steps. It has now only 1600, 3200, 6400 etc. Iso2000 would be optimal for me. Minimum shutter speed would be nice too when using aperture priority. I dont want to go below 1/60s outdoors. I have started using 4k 60P more and more for normal outdoor shooting so too low shutter speed is no more an issue. With a tele lens a still may want to limit shutter speed not going below 1/200s.

Auto exposure works well enough for me and I can help it adjusting EV if I see too dark or too bright image. I shoot many times watching LCD and I cant even see the tiny exposure numbers or expo meter. I have very rarely unsatisfied exposure level with auto exposure / EV correction.

I think Panasonic may add more HEVC options when the h.265 becomes more common and computers will get more power.

  8. Impressive update.

Seems that they have fixed highlight clipping in iso100?

Is the minimum shutter speed working now with video?

Can you trigger the IS lock with a FN-button and during recording?

Why not make HEVC available for normal 8 bit 4k videos too? It would save data storage for amateur users.

Panasonic should finally change their policy of showing exposure values in video. I would like to see aperture, shutter speed and iso when shooting video.

But he still seems to be unaware of the benefits of PDAF, talking nonsense about how it doesn't work as well at apertures smaller than f/8. Who's shooting video at f/11 on a micro four thirds camera? That's the equivalent of f/22 on full frame.

Everyone who shoots video with red video button or using S-exposure mode in daylight without ND. And they never know using f16-22 because the camera is not showing it.

Why not allow Continuous AF ON / OFF to be assignable to a Fn key? Yet I can assign a million other silly things I'll never use...

I have been asking this question for many years with my GH2, GH3 and GH4. To enable continuous AF I must browse menus  using about 10 button presses at worst.

I also wonder why it is impossible to use separate AF-lock and AE-lock. And why single autofocus AFS is disabled with 6k photo? Why AF+MF works only with half shutter ruining the effect?

As for the micro vibration, I was shooting at close to a 400mm FL (FF equivalent) for many of these shots. I was at the max of the lens plus I used the lossless 1.4 ETC of the camera. The birds were relatively far away. So yeah, without being locked down, I can see a bit of micro vibration in some of these long shots. If you think that's bad, you should see similar shots with Sony's IBIS. This is far far better. I'm actually quite happy being able to hand hold at these focal lengths with just that amount of movement. Coming from Sony's IBIS, this is a delight. :) Just remember that no IBIS will create a locked down look at focal lengths like these.

Your clips at max tele are better than mine with GH4 + 14-140mm OIS only. Still my clips with 100-300mm MEGA OIS at 140mm are little more stable without IBIS (GH4). Olympus IBIS makes micro vibration too with a tele lens. I wonder how good is the new 100-300mm II POWER OIS with non IBIS body.
