ANDREW, I believed you partnered with Dpreview for video ? What is wrong with them ? Can you please tell them how this camera is shit and not what we want ?

It must be a joke, this camera is sooooo 2010.
We want a miroless camera from canon that compete A7S.
Native EF Mount, 4K 60fps, 1080p at 120fps, IBIS, 16mpx, Full Frame, in the size of A7S with canon 5DIII body quality, and Nikon/Sony like Dynamic Range.
That is what we want, not a 1" f5.6 fixed lens 2500USD stuff.... seriously.
    I am mad.

    The new GoPro is out.

    As planned:
    4K 30fps
2.7K 50fps (great for fast action with good quality)
    1080p 120fps (great for slowmo)

    Interesting stuff:
Protune in video but also now in photo
Edit : max iso only ..  FULL MANUAL control in video (ISO, Aperture...)

    Surprising:
Black edition get the new features but the silver (no 4K 30fps ...) gets a touchscreen ...

    The bad:
    1150mha battery, it will be 30-45min in 4K / 2.7K 50fps ...

wolf33d reacted to QuickHitRecord in Easiest workflow - MLV Canon 5D mark III
Grading footage in raw is always best, but having a color-balanced, exposure-tweaked ProRes 4444 as a starting point is really, really good. That's how I've been doing it.

It's a good program, as the linked article states. The only reason that I haven't been using it extensively is because BMDFilm color space has become a part of my regular workflow. But if you're not using that, then I can't see a reason not to use MLRawViewer. It's free!

    Hey Wolf33d,

I figured I'd jump in as I wrote the article originally referenced. Many thanks for sharing it here and I'm glad you found it helpful. That ProRes444 workflow retains the majority of the detail (99%) present in the RAW images, HOWEVER you just lose the ability to adjust color temperature and exposure of the raw files. With that being said,  the files are such high quality, these files are such high quality, you can really correct almost any issue you can using RAW files, it will just take slightly longer (taking a few minutes, nothing crazy). On the other end, working with native RAW files requires significantly more storage and renders way slower (1-2 fps unless you have a very fast RAID).

Should you want to, you can make corrections to exposure and color temp in MLRawViewer, but I usually just converted the files straight over to ProRes444. You can apply Filmconvert directly to the "flat" ProRes file and start coloring from there.

The only reason you'd want to go through Resolve is if you MUST use the BMDFilm color space, which is what QuickHitRecord had mentioned. While I've also used this method (and recommend it for other uses), it has a couple of additional steps so I did not include that in the walk through. My goal with the article was to provide the easiest method to get the highest quality files so you can get straight to edit and color correction without spending hours on the forums.

    Hi,

I try to find the best workflow for my 5DIII using Raw MLV.
For the moment I convert MLV in DNG, then open the DNG in Lightroom, grade it, save metadata (instead of doing a looong export) and open it in After Effects, export Prores, open with Premiere and edit and export.
It is too long, even if as a photographer I like to grade with Lightroom. Also it's complicated to grade everything at start and not at the end.

I saw the Premiere - Resolve workflow, but Resolve does'nt work fast with my MBPr 13". Also it is as long, even longer maybe than my usual workflow.

So I did some research and found this amazing workflow : http://www.cineticstudios.com/blog/2014/08/the-easy-way-to-use-magic-lantern-raw-straight-to-prores.html
Basically, you just use  MLRawViewer to convert directly the MLV to Prores 444 (and you can directly apply a LUT such as a flat profile, and change white balance and exposure before converting). Then you open the Prores files in Premiere and you edit in Premiere and do color grading and done.

My question is who tried this ?
Is it as good to use the Prores 444 with flat profile, to grade with film convert on Premiere Pro ?

I am afraid to loose benefits of RAW, but I think as you do the white balance and the exposure, and apply a flat profile before the conversion from MLV to Prores, it's just fine as Filmconver just ads some contrast, color and grain anyway.

    What do you think ?

It would save so much space and time !!

Giving good results like this is amazing, it can only be better, and will be better on future versions.
That's why I am plaised to imagine a real camera with these stuff and all the new tech that will be inside from then :)

    Hi,

Again innovation are coming in phones, first :/.

So Instagram released a new iPhone app, Hyperlapse.
It stabilises video using the accelerometer of the iPhone.
It works AMAZINGLY well (better than the EM-1 stab !!!)

    Just tried it myself...

Of course the purpose is then to accelerate the video to make it an hyperlapse as demonstrated here:
    https://itunes.apple.com/app/id740146917

But you can choose 1x speed and it just makes the video 100% stabilized even when running, with no warping effect ! incredible.

It takes 1-2 second on the iPhone to "stabilise" a 1min video !!
Just imagine a GH4 with an accelerometer inside, and with the hit of a button you get your clip stabilized like this !!!

Definitely the future, if camera makers think 2 seconds....
Byebye steadicams, byebye Warp Stabiliser, byebye all the bullshit.

Well, what about the "darkness" movie shoot between 8000 and 40000 ISO ? was super clean.

By the way ... first test of the A7S by luminous landscape:
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony_a7s_first_impressions.shtml

"- I have to say that the Sony A7s produces some of the cleanest, most pleasant images I’ve seen this side of a medium format system.
    – On the basis of these tests I would judge the A7s to have almost a three stop advantage over the A7r between ISO 6,400 (which is as high as I would use on the A7r)  and ISO 51,200 where the A7s reaches its useful limit (for my type of shooting)."

    3 stops advantage .......
I think you have been too fast and hard about the A7S on this article Andrew ;)

wolf33d got a reaction from Christina Ava in Vimeo to automatically mute videos with 'unlicensed' soundtracks
You guy did not understand at all. I 100% agree with Andrew, and this is a disaster.
Now let me tell you why :

1 - your exemple and comparison is wrong. Because in one case you use audio format (a music) to use it on a different industry : make a personnal video. So it is not copying the music to do the same music, but something else. SO you can't compare with video saying that it would be the same for exemple to copy my video and using it in another video (because you stay on the same support, same industry : video).

2 - Come on man ? If you think 2 seconds about it : first of all I buy the music that I put in my video so the artist should be happy I bought it, secondly puting it in my video is an advertisement for him (see under videos how many comments what is this song blablabla) so it benefits DOUBLE for the artist. If tomorrow you copy my video and use it as a rush in your video, it doesn't give me money (cause you did not pay my video) and it does not make any add for me because people will think this is 100% your video.

The rule should be to pay the track, and give credit to artist in the description, that's all. But when I say pay the track I mean pay the normal one, and not 10 000 USD to have to rights on it. I mean, if you do a commercial and make profit with your video it is normal that you have to pay more, but for creative work, is that not enough to pay the song and credit the artist ? Come on.....

The digital world is becoming less and less free, just like the real world. FUCK Vimeo if they do that seriously.

Lol, I am pretty sure Sony has NO CLUE what the price will be. For sure in term of production cost it is similar to a classic A7. Now it is only about marketing.
As andrew said, video pros will prefer the GH4 if they are on a budget, or a real video camera if they have money. This A7S is perfect for people like me who do stills and videos and want great quality of both. But we are consumers and not willing to pay more than 2K. I saw many many post (SAR comments, forums..) of people saying they pay it under 2K, and not if more. 2K is the limit, so the price of this camera should be 1999 maximum (ideally 1699 to match GH4) otherwise Sony FAILS and I F*** them

    Personally I don't care about 4K.
1080p full pixel readout full frame at 50mbps is perfect for me. With an amazing sensor for stills as well... Can't wait for the summer. Disappointed that they did not give a precise date.. gonna be late like august or something, and no price :(.
