    ah darn, the Olympus XZ-10 lacks a smartshoe so can't use the Olympus EMA-1 Oh well! Otherwise seemed like a cool little compact point and shoot that's dirt cheap it's almost free We must hold you to this promise. Do you ever match them together on the same shoot? The Sony F3 + Panasonic S1H? Really sad to hear 😞 Good luck! I'm way younger, but even for myself, I have been thinking I really should spend less and save more, otherwise retirement will be f%#ked (or more likely... I can just presume I'll never ever retire?). IMDB is a good thing to think of as a long term project, once or thrice a year, just go browse IMDB, add anything to it that is missing (which is often a lot!) and remove anything from your profile that you don't want it there. (if it dilutes/pollutes your brand) Do this little bit of effort every year, and after a few years you'll have quite a full looking profile on IMDB. How do you find which ones to reach out? How do you word your messages? This is something I absolutely need to do too. Same goals here. I will not buy a Sony PMW-F5. I will not buy a Panasonic BS1H. Surely it's an easy choose to keep the smaller and lighter one? It's a massively more practical setup when it comes to shoot on a set with. Unless that is perhaps the Scarlet MX body?? Then fair enough, the shooting options for that is rather crippled vs the RED ONE MX. But even so, I think I'd personally rather have the smaller lighter but crippled Scarlet MX vs the more fully featured RED ONE MX.
  6. The new Raspberry Pi 5 just got released a couple of weeks ago. It's a very impressive new release, for instance it has 5 active PCI Express lanes (useful indeed for us video geeks). There could be some interesting new developments harnessing the new power of the Raspberry Pi 5 that were not possible with the older ones.

I see that there is the "EMA-1" Which allows Olympus point and shoots such as Olympus XZ-1 (CCD video anybody?? haha), Olympus XZ-2, or Olympus XZ-10, etc to use any mics I can feed into that 3.5mm input.     I was just last night doing some research to try and figure out an "EDC camera" for myself. But the deal breaker for me is: must have a 3.5mm mic input (well, ok, I'd live with it if it was a 2.5mm instead like some old Panasonics are) Ideally I'd want it to be a 1" or bigger compact camera. (although I'd consider other smaller sensor sized, such as say 1/1.7" which is still a lot bigger than most camera phones, if it has that 3.5mm mic input and the camera is a fantastic deal) Sadly there is nothing like this I can find in the compact camera world, except for say the Sony RX100 VII (waaaay too new as a camera, and thus too expensive for me!) or bridge cameras such as the Panasonic FZ100 (they're "compact cameras" of a sort I suppose, but not really the compact EDC I want. Otherwise, I might as well just get a mirrorless camera instead with a compact sized lens. As I'd be perfectly happy just using say 28mm FF FoV all the time, with no zoom. Although, I'd prefer wider) Help, is there nothing out there in the world that meets what I want?? It really seems like the only options are an older mirrorless camera with a compact lens. (i.e. what I'm doing already) Edit: I just this second realized the Fujifilm X100T has a 2.5mm mic input. Hmmm... eBay prices a little higher than I'd like to spend, but perhaps. I wonder how awful/good the audio is on the Fujifilm X100T??

    So you can make NZ's own "The Creator" or "The Mandalorian"? 😉 Keen to lend in a hand in whatever way on one of these little test shoots of that, while you figure it out, to be part of it. Mixed production interests me too.

I do wonder if they'd slowed down a little, added a bit more grip / VFX manpower support , say produced it for $12M instead, if they could have then slashed down post production costs to say $40M. As I think the general concept of how they went about making this was a worthwhile idea to trial out, to make it with smaller nimble crews that go out and seek the most amazing locations. And then put that money saved into postproduction VFX instead. (but perhaps spending $80M on VFX was a step too far??) Have a video out now about the audio recorder that I used on this shoot (as what recorder is being used is of course far more important than what camera body is being used! Let's discuss this instead, the fantastic Zaxcom Maxx, perfect for little mini shoots where you want a very lightweight configuration.... just like The Creator??):
  11. That's what I'm saying! The FX3 and FX6 are shockingly similar in terms of weight. This whole debate is a bit silly. Indeed. "Hate" is a strong word but I bet that's exactly how some ACs feel about the FX3. People in this thread underestimate how crippling the design of these more consumer orientated cameras are. Agreed. Especially as they mostly shot at night time. Exactly what I was suggesting, FX6 for the main cameras and the FX3 in a few supplementary roles such as drone camera. Exactly, the amount of time and weight savings with the FX6 is huge
  12. Ha! I jinxed myself, a couple of days later I found myself working on a short film being shot with a P4K: Was a micro sized crew, myself plus two others (although, quite a lot of actors!). Was quite a chill day today, very enjoyable.
  13. Yup, lots of smaller non-chain stores won't be carrying a FX6 in stock but might have a FX3 on the shelf. Sure, and I'm not saying there are just as many sales of the video cameras as stills cameras. But just simply suggesting there is a broadly similar ratio of sales going on here with prosumer cameras (which in the case of stills cameras, means the likes of say Nikon D7500 or Nikon D610. Which certainly had more sales to consumers than professionals), that more sales (or at least, a very large chunk of them) go to consumers vs professionals.
  14. 1) you can't buy an ARRI ALEXA 65, it is a rental only 2) people that you have in mind (i.e. rich dentists / lawyers / trust fund kids / etc) generally are not shopping at the places which have an ARRI in stock. Rather than shopping at more typical photography stores, and wanting "the best" for filming from, and thus they walk out with an FX3. As that's "the best" the store has to offer. Go browse photography forums, the number of casual buyers of say a Canon 1D series (or Nikon equivalent) is higher than you'd think. I'm sure similar-ish numbers get reflected for similar priced videographer/cine cameras too.

  16. Oh for sure, but we're in a thread talking about filmmaking to do with a recently released film. Thus I'm writing from the perspective of film sets (or tv sets). As for going on a side tangent about corporate / weddings / music videos / etc... I think you'd be surprised by just how many of them are being shot with cameras that are at a higher level than a FX3. I think you underestimate those numbers. It's just like with sales of stills cameras, there are likely far more hobbyists who were buying say a Nikon D5 than there are professional sports photographers buying a D5.
  17. Exactly, it's the same reason I don't own an Aaton Cantar X3, even though I really really really want one. (just maybe, I might commit financial suicide one day and just buy a Cantar X3 anyway!) But I'd never earn another extra penny for having a Cantar. Ditto why I don't own Schoeps or DPA shotguns. My 2x MKH60/MKH50 + 2xCS3e / 2x CS1e / CSM1 can do the job just fine enough.
  18. Not really, compared to the FX3 is cheaper than almost any camera on productions that I would usually work on. For reference, this week I've been working days on a tv series shooting on 2x Panasonic Varicam 35 (yup, the big heavy one! Not the Varicam LT). The previous production I worked on before this one, the DP was using a Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro. And funnily enough, the previous DP before that was also using a Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro! (the only two times this year though that I've worked with a Blackmagic camera, no other production has) Then the film before those, it was shot on an ARRI 35. Can't recall far enough back as to what it was on the production before that, all the various productions I'm on tend to all blur together. But I think so far this year the only times I've worked on a production using a camera "below" the URSA Mini Pro would be a little short film I helped out on for one day that was a total sh*t show, big time amateur hour, and they were using a Panasonic GH6. And I think that's it. I am scratching my brain searching for any time with say a mirrorless or a Blackmagic Pocket, but nope. Not this year, perhaps a few rare times last year or the year beforehand. That's why I call the FX3 "prosumer", it straddles the worlds of both consumer and pro worlds. Largely purchased by more consumer orientated purchasers, but also is a handy camera for a B / C Cam for pros (or A Cam for aspiring pros). Although, I haven't came across the FX3 being used for even that myself, just not the circles I'm moving in. However, I did do one day (again, it was just one day, because they were ultra micro budget) on an indie feature film shot entirely on a FX3 last year. Oh wait, I'm just remembering, there was a student short film I worked on which was shot with a Panasonic GH5! That might have been early this year? Or perhaps it was late last year. I think you're missing the point here, at least that I've been making. For myself, I very rarely ever work on productions using a "FF" or 6K or 8K camera. Also, it's a bit unusual if they're shooting raw. And before this year, then the most common camera type I'd shoot with wouldn't even do 4K!

  21. I'd say it is prosumer, it straddles the range across from consumer cameras to "pro" cameras. Just like how the Zoom F8n is a prosumer recorder. And the Sennheiser G4 is prosumer wireless. The Sony a7 series of cameras, are also prosumer cameras.

  23. Exactly, any minor slight arguments in favor of the FX3 being their main/only camera is totally irrelevant once you look into how they were actually using the FX3! (for instance, always with an Atomos recorder and two timecode boxes on it, etc etc etc) In my opinion, they should have used half a dozen or so FX6 bodies with maybe a couple or so FX3 bodies for the very niche uses of crash cam / drone camera. (although it appears they used GoPros as well??? Again, I'd lean towards choosing a Sony RX0 mk2 instead... you can get s-log with 4K 10bit 422 files out of it, with a S16 sized sensor) Or $8M to spend on the production itself during filming. Interesting, the Cam Op isn't even using the Atomos as a monitor! But has added a SmallHD as his monitor for operating with.
  24. well, that's a lie, it's not 2x the weight difference between the stripped down FX6 and the stripped down FX3 When he gets that wrong, how much do you trust this is the truth as to the reasoning behind what he's saying now? Or maybe he's too just part of the marketing aspect of this film, "we're so special and uniquely innovative". And Tentacles as well: "An Audio Timecode was added by connecting Tentacles to the FX3 to match all the metadata." You can see an old original Gen1 Tentacle here: There is a Betso SBOX-1N timecode box there too?? With a cable from a USO on it.
