I think people should just let go. It was an accident, they rode their luck and identified new opportunities. At first the video implementation in the 5d2 was just a derivative of the live view and the fact compact and smartphone where shooting video. Then with the success they just ride their luck by releasing video to all their models and see how the market would move. In doing so they quickly tied many people to their lens system. Then they figured out that there was a group of professional that wanted more traditional video cameras and that were prepared to pay much more that. So they build the highly successful Cinema Eos line. So now they just put very small incremental update to their DSLR line, just to be relevant and nothing more. Good enough for 90% of their photographers who will shoot some occasional video. So in the end they did the contrary of what everybody was thinking by separating rather than convergence. Everybody thought that everything would converge when the dslr revolution started.

What would be also nice, would be 1 or 2 side by side scene with some contrasty lighting to test or just see the Dynamic range between D750 and Sony A7s. Low light would also be nice. I just saw that the A7s Slog can only be use at ISO 3200, am I right? If it is the case it is a bit useless.

I think in one of the comment or in the bts video of the Canadian video that the director said that they used the internal codec. Something of note is that in general the 60p in Nikon's is like 35/40 mbits per second than the 25 mps of the 24 p. The second solution is to wait for the Nikon hackers, they are around 60 mbits for the D800. The only problem is that they have not cracked the Nikon xpeed 4 until now. The particularity of the Nikon Xpeed 4 is that it is programmable arm chip, compared to the custom asic of the previous Xpeed. In the long run it would be very good because, they could programme functionalities like peaking etc. One thing that annoys me with Nikon is their low bitrate. By all account it is a very good implementation of h.264 but what would they have lost to put a 50mbit in standard 24fps and 70+ mbits in the 60p. It is as if they are married to Atomos even if the combo Ninja is very nice with the monitor and recorder functionality in a very compact package (smaller than a external Flash). But it would have put some headline and not force people to have to put another 300+ to get higher bitrate, more so that Atomos did not refrain from promoting the 5d3 clean hdmi output when it came out.

Yes it would be really nice. I am leaning a lot to get this camera mainly for video and replace my D7100. I am a little anxious because I have seen videos of the D800 which is very sharp to my eyes and it would be big disappointment if the D750 is not the same rez. You never know with these companies, for example the D7100 is very sharp compared to the D5200 even if they share the same sensor.

You must use an external recorder. I had a gh2 and it is the same experience between the unhack low bitrate codec and the higher bitrate ones. The thing is that higher the noise the more information (even if it is only noise) the codec has to fit into the limited bitrate. So it start to remove detail where normally it is less seen in the shadows. I experimented it with the D7100 and Atomos, alas the D7100 also has banding.

They do, but no one listen or take notice in the video dslr world. Every new release from the D7100 and up had at least one highly features promotional video to back the launch. The problem is that they where late vs Canon which build a big momentum in video. When did bring something innovative they where rapidly superseded. When they did launch the D800/d4 about 1.5 years ago they where the first to give clean uncompressed HDMI out. But Canon feeling the pressure gave a firmware update to the 5D3 and Sony also followed it. It might look trivial today, but everybody was dreaming about high bitrate codec 3 years ago, the gh2 hack being the proof. Since then they did bring new tech and advancement or more refinement like no moire/aliasing, better ISO and now Flat profile, higher resolution and zebras. In the end all these thing are coming to fruition to produce some solid hybrid video dslr, with the best photo cameras and very good video. I am sure that we will see in 1.5 years when they update the D800/D4 four year cycle features like 4k, better liveview/video AF and hopefully for me some 10+ bit codec and LOG profile. Peaking would also be great.

I forgot to add that when thy will give you 4k in their dslr it will look more like true 1080p than true 4k as they are doing with their dslr now with their 720 supose 1080p rez camera.

Canon knows that on one side they have a large market inertia because of their lens system. A lot of people and pros don't go onto the web to inform themselves, just the name of Canon is enough for them and at worse when you try to discuss, the argument of Magic Lantern is the answer. They won't look that they can mos of these function already in some cameras or that you can get cheap screen with peaking/ false colour/zebras and even vectroscope. The last thing they will tell you is that they can get RAW, even if 99% of them have never used it or cannot because of the size and work-flow with the data. On the second hand, a big bunch of the videographers who came to DSLR for large sensor camera because it was the only affordable solutions 4 years ago will or have happily moved back to dedicated video cameras and will pay the extra or rent as they used to do. So don't expect too much from them for a while. They will be the last to implement 4k, high fps etc. Last year they still sold about 50% of DSLR and its more on the low end compact that sales are plunging. They will only change their stance if there are big market shift, but it will take much more time that we believe becuase of the market inertia.

For those who did not see it, an incredible production from Nikon Canada. Much much better than its USA counterpart. It is more static and much more in focus than the Family video above. The sharpness, details and DR looks very good. More so that in the BTS video they say they used only the internal codec.

On this thread, the OP days that it is even better. I think is more of the low light. My theory is that perhaps with the 36 megapixel sensor they cannot sample the same proportion for the final binning compared to the other 24 megapixel sensor they use. May be you where the 100th person who ask him the same question during the day LOL. I might be joking a bit, but this can be true. Sometime your company might put you in a very embarrassing situation when you are at the forefront of the customers. After some time it can get a bit frustrating defending some position time and time again. On the other hand many time when you come from some big corporation and that business is more or less good, at least for them, the Cinema line seems to have been a success, you get very arrogant.

I forgot to add that they have innovated with the smooth aperture or ISO, which adjust the exposure automatically like for example when you walk into a room or outside the camera does it automatically and in a seamless way. This will be boon for event shooters like wedding videographers when they follow the bride from outside to inside of the church.

Nikon will put 4k in 1.5 years when they will release the successor of the Nikon D4 and D800/810 after their usual 4 years life cycle. With every smart phone that will support it in 2015-2016 and other camera manufacturers, they know they have to include it. Contrary to many belief here, they did innovate by being the first to have video in dslr with the D90 and secondly being the first to give clean uncompressed hdmi out that can recorded in high bitrate codec. In the last 2 years they have cured aliasing/moire as from the D5200, my guess is that they sample much more pixel from the sensor and do pixel binning. This also resulted in much better low light video performance with APSC camera coming very close to the 5D mark 3. They also have upgraded most of their camera since the d5300 with 60p at full hd resolution. In terms of resolution the d800 was nice but had moire/aliasing. Then you had D7100 which had no aliasing/moire but good resolution. Now the latest D810 seems to have very good resolution for a 1080p camera, hopefully it will be the same for the D750. In terms of DR, since the D800 most if not all of the Nikon's are about 12 stop DR in video. The latest D810 and D750 both include a flat picture profile, is it just a profile like the Flaat or technicolor for Canon, or does it come before processing and really extend the DR? Unfortunately no one tested it. They also added zebras in the D810/D750. So what we can see is that they are more evolutionary than revolutionary, at least for video. Sometime they where a little in advance and sometime late. I hope that they develop a mirror less system so that we can see where it is going and might satisfy some need. But I am not prepared to loose my optical viewfinder for an evf until it is clearly better and makes its proof as a reliable tool. Those Nikon are the ones that goes to war zone and space. More so that their are simple work-out like the back LCD (which is reported to be superb on the D810 and D750) which just need a $ 60 loupe to transform into an EVF. You also have a plethora of external EVF that you can attach to the hdmi or Cheap $ 300 Monitor that have peaking/zebras/false colour/vectroscope etc. What I am a bit afraid, is that with all the frenzy about 4k, that they forget things that are more important for me. Like at least higher bitare in standard, but more important of all, at least a 10 bit codec couple with a profile that extract most of the 14+ stop of the sensor. They could also be revolutionary, like giving raw output, but I don't think I am prepared for these type of data rate for now.

Thanks for the video. To my eyes it looks quite sharp and the low light 3200 ISO seems also very good. From first report on the photo side it looks quite good at high ISO and keeps better colour and dynamic range that the D800.

Yes for sure any new camera will go on top at least for some days, but we know that cameras like the Canon Rebels and the Nikon D3300 series sells in the hundred of thousands if not in the million every year, so it is still quite substantial for a $2k + camera. What is more impressive is that the D810 is in the top five after 2 months. I don't know and I guess no one knows exactly until sales figures and their fiscal year numbers come in. But taking the example of someone above who said he did not believe they would even make a profit out of the D750, people should have a little common sense. This camera is going to sell in the tens if not hundred of thousand and Nikon will make like 5 to 10 times more margin on this than the D3300. Will it make them get back to 2012 numbers, I don't think so, but they will get a lot of money out of this.

Me...... Do people here believe that this camera would not sell like hot cakes? It perhaps the best all rounded full frame camera in the Nikon line up with what I will call the best resolution at 24 mega pixel compared to the overkill of the 36 Mp of the D800/D810. The best Nikon autofocus on paper, the same or better that is used in NFL, NBA or champions league football. So event/wedding photographers will jump on it with very good ISO and class leading DR with about the same price of the D600 1.5 years ago. The same price that was considered revolutionary for a full frame camera not so long ago. The only complain you will see from some Nikon shooters is that it is more a Nikon D650 than a true successor to the D700 because of its prosumer body and 6.5 fps compared to the 8 fps of the D700. Now for video if this camera is as the D810 or even better as the Camerastore Youtube video. It would give you very sharp 1080p camera with no moire/aliasing, very good DR and Low light. You could add a $ 300 recorder to get high quality prores 422. All this for for only $ 2300. This camera will be the perfect companion to D800 shooters and will fulfill 90% of a normal Pro or enthusiast photographer and hybrid shooter. I myself is looking closely to it because I could replace my second body Nikon D7100 with better video (if it is proven by review and has 60fps 1080p) with very good autofocus and move completely to full frame glass. It would serve 90% of my event shooting and I would use my D800 for advertising and fashion shoot.

This is a bit of an extreme example, but shows how it is not the tool anymore. I have to add that I did see much nicer video done by Den Lennie.

I understand that this is very video centric website, but it also comprise of many hybrid shooters who are still photo and video shooters. If the D750 shows about the same quality as the D810, I would prefer to invest in it because of its versatility. I shot a lot of things with my D300 at 12 megapixel, but I don't see myself in todays world going for a paying gig where the uncle cell phone or entry level Nikon/Canon Dslr shoots 20/24 megapixel photos. If someone is purely in video, I understand why the A7S makes more sense. But it does not mean that the other HDslr don't have their place, when they can achieve as good of the quality of the promo video I posted above.

What it shows is that it is not the camera which is the limiting factor, if you have the eye of the people who did it you can achieve such quality. For this example there was no Hollywood gear and budget (like the other Nikon d810 promo video) and the camera shows high resolution, high to very DR, no moire/aliasing and no disturbing rolling shutter. I think they said that did not even use an external recorder. We would not have dreamt to get this high quality imagery with even the possibility of high prores bitrate for these type of prices 3 years ago. But people just complain because it is so much easier to criticize the tool than the craftsmen. The same thing for photography, since about 2007 (d300/d3/d700/5dmark 2 etc), no photographer can say that it is the camera which is the limiting factor. If you cannot take a good photo with one of these camera, then you will never be able with any camera. You also get as a bonus the best ever photographic camera of all time.

I think you should not look not only about your needs but the needs of other photographers to critisize the DSLR form factor Andrew. You do mostly street photography and the small light form factor is really suited to that like the leica's. But if you look at the main criticism from Nikon users on forums is that it does not follow the D700 lineage (It is more like a D600+) of a full pro body, which means a ........... bigger body. If ever tomorrow you shoot a long event or a 12 hour wedding then you will understand why photographers want those bigger body, even adding a battery grip making it even heavier. Try holding those small for factor cameras for hours and you will see why. I also not prepared to let go of the 100% OVF for something like an EVF until the latter surpasses it, which is not the case until now for my pro photography. The second thing is about the good enough philosophy about video. If you think that this quality is not good enought for 99% of work . Then I would like to see tens or hundred of videos done on panasonic/sony and even blackmagic camera that are miles ahead of this video. The D810 has been measured at more than 800 lines, which would compare favourably to cameras like Canon C300/gh2 etc. Which are known to produce very good imagery in Cinema screen size projection. Since the D5200 Nikon has been producing cameras that are Moire/aliasing free. They must have been sampling much more pixel and binning them and they have even done the feat of doing it with the 36 megapixel D810 . You can also add the 12 stop of DR and low light that are very close to the 5dmark 3 in low end $ 700 D5200/5300 in low light. When you add all those thing you are getting with no added cost to a typical photography dslr, I don't see why I should fork more money as a hybrid user and buy some other video camera. You can also add a $ 300 atomos recorder to get high quality propres bitrate out of it. I am not saying that I would not like more video functionality or for example a 10 bit codec but I think 4k and some of those thing will come in the next iteration of the D800 and D4 in 1.5 years. Since then, I think that we are getting a lot of video quality which we would have dreamt for only 2 years ago for free.

Remember that Nikon was the first to put video in a Dslr even if the implementation was not that good (People where doing all type of things until the 5d2 came out). They where also the first to offer clean uncompressed hdmi output that can be recorded at high bitrate. Since then they have offered alias/moire free image, super lowlight and 60p and best in class DR from their apsc line of camera. Unfortunately they are more incremental than revolutionary, The Uncompressed HDMI was supposed to be the big feature but no one could predict that Blackmagic would launch RAW cameras and that Magic lantern RAW hack of the Canon camera. If else they would have been at the top the last two years in the DSLR price point. What you also forgot to add is that it is Nikon and Canon that more or less put all those companies on the side line by providing the best value to money cameras for more than half a century (Nikon will be a century old in 3 years). They suffered a lot at the start of the digital era from about 2002 to 2007 to the hand of Canon. But they rectified it as from 2007 with the D3/D300 which completely turned the table. Since then it has been a home run, they beat Canon in every possible way (image quality). What this tells me is that they are the type of company that will bite their time if need be if they don't have the tech to compete now, but when they come it is usually with a bang. The fact that they are talking so much about video is a clear indication that it is important for them and that next generation will have improved video. They have implemented SRAW in D4s and the D810. For the D810 the SRAW is 9 megapixel, about exactly 4k!!!!!!! Now I am not saying that we will have 4k RAW in the next camera (it might be completely unmanageable), but it show that 4k is very feasible. The best or worst scenario depending on where you stand, will be when every Nikon will come out with 4k, 12+ stop DR, 10 bit + codec and 60+ fps and proper focusing in video/live view. This will happen in the next 2 to 4 years across the whole line and be prepared to see a lot of the smaller players pack their bag. Hopefully it will not be the case, but you will be able to get these spec in the $ 600/700 Nikon dslr that you can by across the globe and in every electronic shop at the corner of the road.

Just for the knowledge of some here. Nikon is still making profit compare that to the loss of the Panasonic and Sony of this world. If one or the other still continues to make losses, you might find yourself with a bunch of lens with no new camera to attach to it in the next few years. The cell phone are affecting more of the low/mid end camera sales with mirrorless taking a hit. At least Canikon has the upper mid to pro market that won't be affected by the cell phones. Nikon also forms part of the mitsubishi group of companies and they have the medical imaging and stepper business for semiconductor manufacturing. So to those that because of the inflated ego want an iconic imaging company that is nearly a century old to disappear. Just be prepared for the exact contrary, because in 2 years the whole Nikon line will have much better image quality than most can use. Then the question will be what will happen to the Sony and Panasonic camera of this world. Do I want that, certainly not because competition is the essence of innovation.
