  1. Do you even have a bottleneck? Your SSD and RAM should be able to handle small bits of footage. Assuming you can scrub through your footage in real time, I'd say save the money for a 4K upgrade down the road (monitor, video card, at that point a new machine.)

  3. Complete weaksauce. Very little dynamic range. Totally underwhelming. That said, I hope they fix the magenta fringing. Even though this footage is cropped, you can still see some evidence of it in the corners.

    Raven Footage

    Doesn't it do 120 fps lossy at full resolution? Edit: yup, it does at 15:1. Last time I shot the shit with a DP that shoots lots of Red, I was told you could basically get visually lossless with 8:1, so it'd be interesting to see what a 15:1 capture looks like. I'm not defending the Raven by any stretch, it's just, just, just out of my budget because of shit like: proprietary media, proprietary media off-loader, oh and probably the redcode card or whatever they call it. So much extra $$$ required.

    It does audio. From the site: Integrated dual channel digital stereo microphones, uncompressed, 24-bit 48 kHz. Optional 2 additional channels with Expander Module, uncompressed, 24-bit 48 kHz. What it does poorly is slo-mo. It's super compressed. The Raven is the ultimate crash/fly cam. Which means it's useful for about 2% of this forum. That said, at 10k for an almost complete kit, it's a pretty sweet deal.

  7. Right dude? I get a camera with a 5" 1080 folding monitor, 4.6k sensor able to capture 15 stops of light, slo-mo, and an internal 10-bit or RAW recorder. It doesn't use proprietary media and the accessories are reasonably price. All for less than $5000. Oh wait, hold on, I get the lack of enthusiasm: it doesn't shoot over ISO 9000, hasn't got triple-pixel laser auto focus, no 8-axis stabilization, and, it doesn't even make my bed for me! I mean, shit, Red Raven has TWO fans, Ursa doesn't even have one. Blackmagic, Grant Petty, epic fail.

And here in more ideal lighting conditions with a bargain-basement Samyang lens the sharpness and color pops in a super pleasant way:
  9. Really? You think Windows 10 Mobile and the 950 are a bright spot? Microsoft has flushed it's mobile OS 3 times in the last 7 years. Twice, Microsoft attacked its own early adopter user and developer base: killing off WP7 (fucking over users) and WP8 (fucking over developers). Both Android and iOS have supported wireless displays and keyboards, with Android also supporting mice. So now they're shipping Windows 10 Mobile. Have you seen how buggy it runs? Have you seen how gutted the core apps are? What the hell has happened since WP7? I don't mind running beta software but even I reverted to WP8 on my 640. I honestly cannot fathom who in Microsoft thinks that W10 Mobile is ready to ship. What's the point of Continuum? What's the use case for someone having to connect their phone to a display, bringing with them a keyboard and mouse? If you need to be productive on the road, you use a laptop. Need to display something on a TV? Like I wrote earlier, iOS and Android support wireless display. Being able to transition an app from device to device sounds useful, but what app do I need to do that? Most of the apps I use sync to my other devices already (tabs from the browser, netflix for videos, google play for my music.) iOS Continuity is a far more useful feature. You sit down next to your computer or laptop and receive all your notifications on the bigger display. No dialogue screens, no physical connections. Just a seamless transition: your computer has phone features. And with regards to the 950. This is what Microsoft did to Nokia? Less impressive camera (since the PureView 808), regressive design (since the Lumia 700), complete lack of colors, and, and asking price of $600 USD for specs you can currently get for $300 or less (far less if you look at the Asus ZenPhone 2 and LG G3). 7 years later: dwindling user base, zero support by other manufacturers and an OS that is almost up to feature parity with iOS and Android. And this rant is from someone who loved the Metro design language. Someone who bought a new Lumia nearly every year because the phones were genuinely awesome, with competitive features and an OS that was on the cusp of becoming great. Someone who acted like a fucking marketer every time he was asked "oh, what phone is that?"

  12. Smart! This is the camera I plan to upgrade to sometime next year. I feel like when the Ursa finally starts to ship, the resale value of the FS700 will take a serious hit. Slowly getting prepared for the change. I got paid in USD a few weeks ago and plunked it down on a mix-and-match set of Rokinon/Samyang/Bower T1.5 primes in EF. Originally I was thinking going for the Xeens and pairing it with the Ursa 4.5k in PL but the Sony has way too many more positives. 4K RAW out of this camera at 60 fps or burst 120 fps is really awesome. This guy shared some DNG samples using the Q7 recorder.

Sorry, but there are very little internal components in fluorescent fixtures: terminalswiresa ballast (when not using CFLs)The only issue would be a bad ballast (which can be replaced for ~$10) or bad wire insulation (which would be very quick to find out because it'll dead short and/or electrocute you). You're probably confusing LED panels or power adapters, which run off VDC and have many electronic components. (Usually the problem here is the rectifier/power supply being poorly insulated and the components being crammed way too close together and to the main board.)

  15. If you're willing to fork over the cash, Kino Flo sells T8s and CFLs that have zero colour cast. That's what I've been doing for the last year or so. I purchase crappy Chinese video light kits, sell the awful bulbs that come with them (I pretty much give them away), and plug in the wonderful Kinos. I'm getting awesome light for a 1/10th of the cost. LED panels sub $1000 are terrible in mixed lighting situations. Nothing is worse than having to "decide" what cast you want in your final footage, green or magenta.
  16. Your CFast media price seems a little wonky. Cursory search reveals that the approved Lexard 3400x cards cost: 128GB = USD 341.99 256GB = USD 677.80 And I mean, those are B&H prices. Guaranteed you can find a better deal. That said, this stuff (media prices) changes by the second, so I respect your compiling effort. I await the published Raven specs. Hoping for some real awesome DR and possibly even HDRx capability.

  18. You and Max got me pointed in the right direction. I want something highly portable that can capture ridiculous DR. I had it in my head that signal gain was what I wanted, but it's obvious I want to alternate shutter angle values with a high frame rate camera. I'll have to take a look at what the max FPS is with ML/Canon cameras. But I think my options at this point are, Blackmagic Micro (can we cycle shutter angle during recording and quick enough?) or just buy a USB3 camera sensor.

  20. ​That's the key sentence. 22-bit sensor data has to be mapped into a 12-bit file. You can choose which part of your data is squashed via ISO.
  21. It's crude but it works. By alternating the digital gain, we can capture more of the top and bottom of our signal data. It works more effectively than squeezing all signal data into a 12-bit file.
