I will continue to enjoy Canon through their lenses at least even if not their DSLRs. The 85MM F1.2L is the work of a madman!!

I don't read the site so not sure what's going on there… I do however know we are coming to a point where 99% of the internet is recycled material re-posed and re-posted ad infinitum. My RSS feed this weekend read like the contents of a junk mail folder. One black friday deal after the other, with the occasional cut and pasted news article. Not a good sign for the future of the internet. Censorship? Just the tip of the iceberg my friend :)

No argument there.  It would cost twice as much and come with a shitty codec.  They'd fill it up with BS and create a half dozen models with meaningless, incremental differences between them and none containing all of the features most asked for.  Something like what we have.

Not that it matters to anyone but I don't want them in this market.  All I've ever pointed out is how effortless it would be for them to have done it if they wanted to.  The BMD cameras are far simpler devices than the $300 Rebel at BestBuy that's essentially designed to be crap so that someday you'll buy one that's maybe less crap...but still crap.

They're only low volume because they're being produced by a small company.  Given that they can't make them faster than they can sell them it stands to reason the larger companies could beat BMD at their own game because scale is on their side.  Your naysaying doesn't make any sense.

Your argument also ignores the fact that all of the majors are selling cameras purposely retarded from doing what BMD cameras are doing.  Every DSLR is a raw camera internally.  It's more engineering, more complexity and more work added on top to arrive at shitty compressed footage, not less.  For reasons ranging from apathy to protectionism they aren't doing what BMD is doing and they're doing more work and spending more per camera to NOT answer that segment of the market.

Yeah, I saw that one too.

Pretty impressive but, again, whilst its cheap in comparison to the Movi, I still feel there is a premium being thrown on to it because of that.

As for the one on ebay....I'm proposing 20 of us throw £20 each in to buy one and get Andrew to run round Berlin with it for a few days to give us the verdict!

Today Metabones release two new Speed Boosters for Blackmagic shooters.

I've been using some demo samples for this special review and I'm absolutely stunned.

Metabones and Caldwell Optics have given us a Zeiss / Kubrick / NASA special! These adapters are completely new and purpose designed to fit only the Blackmagic cameras. Offering super bright apertures as fast as F0.74 and finally some great wide angle possibilities, I put both new adapters through their paces...

    How to use raw...

    Press record.

    Swap card when full.

    Record audio separately.

    Edit in Resolve.

    Sync with the audio.

It ain't that hard… alas devil is in the details… and that is why I wrote the book.

mtheory reacted to jpfilmz in BMPCC raw inferior to 5DMiii
I understand your pain with the BMPCC.   I decided a few months ago to go with the 5D after the Blackmagic price drop. That kinda did it in for me as the resale value of that gear has terrible depreciation.  Love the image.....but that wasn't enough for me to bite.  I already had alot of canon gear and didn't feel like changing over to a different camera system just yet.  So I decided to try the 5D out and figured RAW would be an added bonus.  So far I very impressed with it. The more I shoot with 5D Raw the more I like it and feel comfortable working with it.  In fact, I shot a music video this past Saturday using it and the only problem I encountered was running out of space on the 64 gig card(I will be ordering more!).  Here are some ungraded frames.

I like the colors and details that RAW provides. Also, on this shoot I didn't know what the subject would be wearing and when I saw his jacket I knew I could be dealing with moiré problems.  I struggled with moiré using the 7D until I got a Mosaic anti alias filter for it.  After that I told myself I would never deal with a camera that had moiré issues and wasn't good in low light.  I heard moiré affected the blackmagic cameras and that worried me.  Fortunately, the 5D handles both situations it very well so I went with it and it has done well.
YouTube compression butchered this video up until 1:14 sec in and after that you can see crop mode shooting on the ants.  I will say that you can't record for very long using crop mode and it will drop a frame so I would not rely on that on a shoot.

It's the oldest, but I've had both. I'd take the Mark 2 over the 6D any day. I still love the image it puts out for video straight out of the box, and yes it does do Raw with ML. It uses CF cards also so the resolution should be higher. Both have a VAF mosaic anti aliasing filter available.

I think the future of ML will be strongly influenced by the next 7D2 release.

If Canon does not cripple it, we might get a true S35 RAW camera for $2000, it could seriously become THE most popular indie cinema camera and ML will thrive on that wave.

The announcement of 7D2 is scheduled for March 2014.

We'll have to agree to disagree Damp. I think you're totally wrong in your estimation, consumers thrive on innovative products that are worth it. The car industry is a good example with increasing safety standards and better gas mileage, people buy new cars every few years because they feel that the newer models have compelling new features that simply weren't available a few years back.

Look at GoPro, those guys are innovating mofo's, if you owned a 1st gen GoPro, upgrading to the latest model is a very compelling proposition. The fact that years have passed and Canon cameras still can't manage to shoot 60fps at 1080p is ludicrous. On the photography end, even if resolution is not compelling to you, how about built-in wi-fi and a GPS? How about a higher quality screen that is easier to see in direct light? How about built-in support for remote operation through a smart phone? How about a freaking built-in intervallometer for chrissake?

No, you're wrong, Canon's been sitting on their lazy corporate butts for far too long and now the sales are dropping. If they begin to innovate once more and offer true reasons to buy new cameras, the sales will rise once more.

Just to add my 2 bit coins to the conversation:

I think if DSLR's are going out of business, Canon and Nikon have only themselves to blame. Lack of innovation and lazy development cycles has not gone unnoticed by consumers.  When the t3i, t4i and t5i are essentially the same exact camera with minor tweaks, what is the motivation to upgrade? Same could be said with the 5D2 and 3, I have too many friends with the 5D2 who don't feel any need to upgrade to the newer camera since the benefits are relatively minor all things considered. I suspect the 7D will follow the same path.

If Canon really wanted to see an upward swing in sales, they would need to be more aggressive with the technology. Imagine if 2 years ago the 5D3 had been announced touting a 36mpix sensor, built-in wi-fi, oled screen, 4K mjpeg and 2K raw and priced competitively? It would have sold like hot cakes.

Apple is running a similarly dangerous game with their new Mac Pro. $3k for a 4-core Xeon with 12gigs or RAM and no internal expandability? WTF??? Next year they will shut down their whole desktop division claiming that consumers are no longer interested in big computers...but the truth is that consumers are no longer interested in being ripped off.

When I travel, all I see are tourists with DSLR's. They see the difference in the photos they take, the depth, realism and faithfulness of the images they show their friends back home is palpably better than what current smartphones or pocket cameras are capable of. I think the interest is there, but not at a premium price for basically the same technology from two years ago.

lets face it, the GH3 has no place next to raw out of any camera that we've seen to date. i'm not here to slam your grade either.
i'm not saying i don't see a niche for G cameras, they're great and cost effective.
i have shot with many cameras, and just had the opportunity to shoot with some Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon FF-Prime's on a C300. lovely image.
but for me, nothing comes close to the 5D3 for the cost. unbelievable image coming out of that camera. even if I had all the money in the world, i would still be looking through the Canon 5D3.

mtheory got a reaction from pablogrollan in cheapest camera for perfect green screen work
BMCC is 4:4:4. I have keyed 4:2:0 footage successfully ( 5D2 H264 ), but it takes me about 3x times longer, plus some shots got spoilt because my DOF was too shallow and the edges of actors were too blurry. With BMCC, the sensor is much smaller and your actors' contours will always be very sharp. You can always add DOF in post, but taking it out is impossible. Plus, with 4:4:4 you will be able to adjust exposure and the 2.5k will provide a better pixel sensitivity for your keyer.

In fact, if you absolutely, definitively want the best key in the world, shoot your actor in portrait mode...that should give you an equivalent of a 4K RAW 4:4:4 vertical resolution...the absolute top notch image for keying and compositing into something else.
