Julian got a reaction from AaronChicago in Thoughts on crowd sourcing
Crowdsourcing is not the same as crowdfunding. Nothing wrong with either of them, you are not forcing anyone to pay or participate.
I don't think it's easy to crowdfund a short film though. There is a lot of competition, you'll need to get your project in the spotlights. I think you won't succeed if you can't show anything. You should have a teaser/trailer or some previous work/films at least and it better be damn good...
If the mentioned soundtrack is made by someone like Hans Zimmer you'll probably get away without showing anything. If it's someone nobody really knows, I wouldn't expect people to have much interest in it...
Have a look at Kickstarter Movie projects. Plenty of examples that worked out great or didn't work at all. In most cases it's clear why it did work or didn't work.
It might be easier to crowd source it. Look for a sponsor for your wardrobe, find some student actors / sound guy that want to work on their portfolio. Or 'pay' it yourself by doing some work for them in return.

So there is still no alternative for Atomos if you like to shoot 4K on Sony As, is not it? I wonder why no one has made a simple solution for A7s, without the external monitor, but only a recorder part.

That's not what I mean. I like it regardless of how it was made. I would love just the same if it was a billion dollar production by Michael Bay.
What I mean is that it doesn't matter what critics say, and it doesn't matter if people like it or not.
It would matter if the people who backed it on Kickstarter disliked it, but I don't think that's the case. I'm pretty sure 99,99% of the backers got what they asked for.
I don't necessarily agree or disagree with Ed's statement about "bringing down the movie business" and "turning it into art". To me, Kung Fury absolutely is art. And it is a good example of what can be achieved by an individual without the movie industry as we know it. So maybe Ed has a point.
But then again, I don't think it matters, because it doesn't pretend to be anything.

Kung Fury does connect with me. I get the comparison people make with something like Danger 5, but that doesn't connect to me at all. Can't even stand watching the trailer. Humor is difficult and very subjected to taste, Kung Fury nails it 9/10 for me.
Anyway, imo the whole discussion about this movie is pointless. The dude had an idea, wanted to make it. Went to Kickstarter, found a lot of people who wanted to see it. Those people paid for it, dude made the movie. People that wanted to see it loved it, so did million others. It's completely unpretentious. That's what I like about it.

If this really works as advertised, and has a reasonable optical quality, FM will be dud. Not to mention rectilux out of business before even starting out. At least FM guys made it into the market early.

Curious to see this in action... I'm also interested to see if it works on a Kowa B&H.
I'm still looking for the perfect (affordable and suitable for hand-held shooting) single focus solution. This might be a step in the right direction.

I played with the Rangefinder at Cine Gear. Works as advertised. has a 77mm rear thread. Eddie from Vid-Atlantic was there too and it worked on his Isco Ultra-star.

Julian got a reaction from nahua in New Metabones Speedbooster for the GH4 - S35 crop size!
I agree the difference of 0.07 is not such a big deal, but imo the 'normal' EF - MFT Speed Booster is already a great product. This just makes it better.
The difference is more relevant for wide lenses. Because you now get the same crop factor as any aps-c camera, you can use all lenses 'as intended'. The Sigma 18-35mm for example. With the 0,71x Speed Booster, you get a 31-60mm equivalent (4K UHD), with the 0,64x you get the 28-55mm equivalent. 28mm vs 31mm is noticeable. It's not only about subject distance, but about a certain look and perspective.
On top of that, you'll get an extra 1/3 stop of light. It's not much more expensive than the 0,71x SB either. So, that's what makes me - as a GH4 owner - excited.
    Thanks Brian!

Rangefinder will work on any lens, anamorphic or spherical. Looks like it's all aboard the morphic single focus bandwagon express! Price sounds good providing the optic quality is there (have doubts, yet would love to be proved wrong)...after all, all that these single focus adapters are - are variable diopters focused by a helicoid, not the Manhattan project like some would want you to believe.

Anamorphic is not just about a wider aspect ratio. Characteristics like flare and oval bokeh are much more important in my opinion.

It's actually a 9x11" sensor, so they say...
    http://largesense.com/products/8x10-large-format-digital-back-ls911/
But basically it is impossible to make a cmos sensor that size.
Sensors are made out of round silicon wafers, the current (biggest) standard is 300mm (12"). 9x11" does not fit on a 12" wafer. Even if it would, it would be _extremely_ expensive, because a large part of the wafer would be 'waste'.
On top of that, there is always a part of the wafer that has some fault. With small sensors, that's not a big problem, because you just have to throw away a small part (1 sensor) of the wafer. This is the reason fullframe is much more expensive than aps-c.
If you'd make large format sensors this way you'd have to throw away the whole wafer for any error.

    YES!!!! This is awesome!
I had the M43/EF Speed Booster on my wishlist for a while, but 0,71x combined with 2,3x crop wasn't worth the premium price for me.
Also for Photography this will be great, bringing the GH4 close fullframe. It would be perfect if it had fast autofocus like the new Kipon (non speedbooster) adapter... looks like there is no AF at all. But IS should work...
    Anyway. I want it, badly!

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I don't think you "get" Kung Fury. To compare it to the Epic/Disaster/Date movies is way off the mark. (profit-only junk).
Kung Fury is a celebration of 80's action movies, music and video game culture. All blended into one. While it makes a parody of it all - it's not done in a crude and negative way like these Hollywood parodies normally do. The filmmaker clearly loves what inspired the film, and you can tell how much fun he must of had making this film. he put himself into it (literally) and you can tell. There is a lot of heart hidden beneath the layers of composites.
Maybe my opinion is different than yours as I have the same interests as David Sandberg. I can relate to all the cliches, the over-the-top stunts, the directing style, the one-liner intoxicated script.... all of it. I love it when we can be ridiculous and get away with it. So many filmmakers "play it safe" but this guy just goes for it, all guns blazing, doesn't care what anyone thinks. But unlike Sucker Punch, it's intricately inspired and oozes character.
While I don't expect everyone to like this film, it's unfortunate to see on a filmmaking forum that some people can't appreciate the skills and effort of the filmmaker - regardless of personal taste.

    Wow.
Also I thought Tiny Furniture was whiney, boring, and petty bourgeois issues.  Just like my little film, "The Quiet Escape."
I think Kung Fury is touching, sweet, creative, and memorizing much like the first Matrix and had a sense of humor.
But hey, I guess we all have opinions.

Kung Fury is most creative and fun film I've seen since Napoleon Dynamite.  Here's the link -  a Swedish film funded by Kickstarter - here's a link to the full film.
Basically it came out of nowhere - made by David Sandberg for no money just with his friends and raised on Kickstarter up to $600k for a 30 minute film that beats pretty much every Hollywood action comedy I've seen in the past 20 years.  And all in 30 minutes.  It's just a pure idea that's hilarious and so well made and thought out.  He took his skills from music videos and created something more creative and brilliant than made by a much larger budget like Mad Max: Fury Road.  With a more realized world, better script, and more interesting characters.
Here's a behind the scenes look at the film - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReYHl8SPVfM
It doesn't look like much to make it - just guys on a greenscreen - and it oozes personality and character.
You don't need hundreds of people and studios behind you to be creative - just a little idea.
That fat girl is David Sandberg.  He circumvented the whole world of Hollywood and made a better Hollywood movie than Hollywood could make.
You don't need hundreds of screenwriters and rewrites and famous actors and egos - just one vision - one idea - and a bunch of friends, and a little bit of money.
The internet allows this to happen.  The Internet allows anyone a fighting chance.  It is decentralized.  Gabe Newel, the CEO of Value talks about this - if you have a good idea, it will get out.  Word of mouth.  It just gets out.
So next time you make something, anything - just make it good.
Put all your money into making it good and the Internet will take care of the rest.
The film is a trojan horse - it seems silly but the message is simple - "Hollywood - with all your focus testing and test screenings and computers you can't overcome something simple - film is about storytelling and mood and following the vision of a director or small-knit group of friends. You have become lost and distant to what is possible in the modern era."  With more films like Kung Fury becoming successful, I now have renewed hope in the future of filmmaking.  Boring and unremarkable films like Ex Machina and Chappie and the Avengers 2 of the Hollywood machine can go far, far away and real passionate auteurs can make their films from anywhere just with going straight to the people, who are much more intelligent than Hollywood gives the world credit for.
