jgharding got a reaction from majoraxis in My Journey To Virtual Production
I'm at intermediate level with Unreal in general, though I've not used VP templates yet, but I have made motion graphics pieces, developed small games (including entirely custom player controllers built from ground up etc etc) so I'm fascinated by VP as well.
As far as I understand it it's something where cost spirals very very quickly as you scale up to multiple screens. With one screen, let's say you buy a 90-inch 4K OLED or something, you can use a consumer GPU and get away with it.
Once you want to sync walls of video screens you'll need to use a Quadro Sync and have colossal amounts of VRAM available. https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/design-visualization/solutions/quadro-sync/
Like most Unreal things it's WIP and you benefit if you know someone who is good with C++ and Unreal, which is hard to find. For example movie render queue in 4.27 is very much improved compared to previous versions, but still has some really hacky and opaque aspects, such as the need to enter arbitrary CVARs to make certain things look right, which you just have to go and find out, it doesn't hold your hand. It's no Resolve...
In general that's the hardest part. I've been on the Unreal journey for 3 years and it has never gotten easier, mainly because there is always something new to learn and stuff just keeps changing. It's very rewarding though, good luck and please keep us updated!

In that case my instinct is with GH6 due to it's similarity with the S1H and its clear focus on video. Typical of Panasonic the settings, menus and so on appear to include pretty much everything you can do with a camera.
They're done everything they can to mitigate the physical issues of a small sensor, including implementing the dual-gain architecture, so for manual use I'd whack a speed-booster on the GH6 to boost the light input and sensor size and use that TBH.
I've not used either so I'm going off the available YouTube reviews etc

I agree. AF testing is one of the tests that is done the least realistically and also the least consistently.
I'd prefer someone like DXO or similar to setup an automated test that simulated the various common scenarios can be repeated reliably between various cameras, lenses, firmware updates and various modes.

Might be fixable if it is. I remember on E-M1 II which also has phase-detect AF, actually it could be quite decent in stills mode with EF lenses... But in video mode, it all went to shit. Which is probable, when you consider the limitations of the EF lens bandwidth and that the adapter probably needs to do a lot of translation on the fly or can't use it as optimally as a native EF camera can.
I'd be curious to see if the OM1 is the first M43 camera to give us MC-11 like performance with Canon glass though.
That would be huge.
I'd dust off the Speed Booster for that!

It's France. Nuff said.
The banks don't allow you to spend your own money and at lunchtime on the day you have set aside for a confirmed courier collection, you get an email saying you have to TELEPHONE to arrange a collection...but it just rings out.
Last week I had the joy of driving 30 minutes to a collection point for a parcel that they claimed not to be able to deliver because I wasn't in...and the collection place turned out to be a local bakery...and they had not been a collection point for at least 4 weeks. Then they just send you in more circles as the system can't cope with anything that doesn't work.
Oh the joys of rural France...

Dual IS won't work with any Panasonic lens though I've heard some behave better than others. Focus stacking in camera is only for Olympus lenses. AF in video works better with Olympus lenses, but in my experience it performs well enough with all PDAF bodies. However, I don't have any experience with the lenses you mentioned above.
If log is a need, I've heard they've improved it, but don't hold your breath. Olympus hasn't been good at log in recent years. I'd wait if I were you if absolutely need this feature.

The AF section of this video is relevant.
Essentially OM1 quad pixel AF is near perfect.

One of the AF features that I spotted on the leaked GH6 video is that it appears to have a focus limiter function that looks very similar to the one that (*own trumpet blowing alert*) I have in my AFX product.
On the AFX, you store a near and far focus point and it will only respond to subject movement between those two distances. So you can define the range of movement of the interviewee, put it in AF-C mode and guarantee that it won't go off focusing on things in the background etc.
With judicious use of the aperture you can set near and far distances up in such a way that you have enough overall focus range to have a safety net without massively comprising the shallow depth of field aesthetic.
It remains to be seen how Panasonic have implemented their limiter in terms of it is just for AF-S but if it is AF-C like the AFX then it is a boon for interview applications in particular.
The AFX also has a separate absolute limiter function so you can selectively limit maximum AF-C focus range to, say, 2 metres which can negate a lot of the AF issues which present themselves when people are vlogging both indoors and outdoors.
Not sure if Panasonic have implemented that in the GH6 too though.

Indeed, when given the choice between buying a Sigma lens in E or L mount, one of the big reasons for buying a modern lens rather than using classic stuff is AF. So if they can't sort out AF, the entire mount dies. No rush then!

I agree on the importance of AF.
Especially in a mirrorless camera.
In terms of the market, Blackmagic seems to have got a free pass though. Shit AF all round from them, and nobody complains and the cameras sell like hot cakes.
So what's going on?
Sony, Canon and Nikon all AF obsessed and producing very capable systems in both video and stills mode. Fuji is patchy.
I thought maybe it's Sony patents holding Panasonic to ransom, or past mistakes. But then a literal Olympus CORPSE comes out of a graveyard and gives us Quad Pixel phase-detect AF on sensor.
It's absolutely bizarre the whole thing isn't it?
As for GH6, I have one but am under NDA so can't say anything about it until it launches for real.

There's a fella on YouTube who is pretty good with the ZV1 and possibly now ZV E10 and he reckons the HLG option is where it's at also and what I am currently using.

Indeed. Should be standard on all cameras.
Fuji made a cheaper version of it in the XT100 (which was enough for me), but abandoned it.

Yeah it has an S1H vibe for sure.
It's cool and all, but i'm really anxious about this DFD AI AF. If it isn't a significant step up...

Basically you can just do as many nodes ad you like in resolve and export that as a 65-point LUT, and that becomes your match LUT, so you only do the work once.
ACES is another option, but I quite like doing things my own way tbh, using a combination of stock conversion LUTS and my own tweaks

Yeah the top is the sony, that's the side affect of matching for skin, as that there is a tiny tint in other areas, that is what I'll dial out with secondary
The S1H is just a coversion LUT of mine and a node before for tweaks. I think the sony match is done in about 5 nodes, could probably be condensed into fewer but I like to be able to switch each on and off
The first node in the Sony is my own LUT though, with a new cam the first thing I do is spend a couple of days making a match LUT for my main cam, it saves tons of future time

It would be a bonus point in my eyes if the GH6 has the same/similar tilt screen as the S1H rather than a vloggers flip out.

Here's a first pass at matching up the ZV E10 and S1H, it's not perfect with the shirt and a slight tonal difference, but getting there, definitely will be close enough once I have it finalised, so I'm pretty happy. It didn't miss focus for the whole shoot. Which is more than can be said for me.
The rolling shutter is so bad though that if someone sways back and forth their head bends HAHAHA
But in general it's great, so if sony ever release a new APSC sensor cam with faster readout I'll likely upgrade to that. Or possible an A7S3 if I find I really start to enjoy the Sony more.

I don’t think simply fixing the AF situation alone would be enough.
It would be a start, but then needs some shouting about as a brand/system.
My fingers are crossed, but I’m not holding my breath.
The ‘savior’ of the DFD could be computing power from what I understand…but that’s not something I know too much about.
GH6 will be an indicator.

Looks pretty good to me. If someone notices then they're probably not paying attention to the subject matter.
I watched a YT video on colour matching different cameras and the guy said that the footage needs to look "like it comes from the same universe" which I thought made a lot of sense, as essentially as long as the colour differences aren't so obvious that they break the illusion then they won't be noticeable and so are fine.
Interesting that the top one has the greener mids (the shirt) and the more magenta shadows (the shadow on the wall) compared to the bottom one, when they've been matched on skintones and the wall colour.
How much colour work did you have to do for these shots?

Identical to a T, except ZV1 for me.
If I’d waited a year, I would have gone for your slightly bigger sibling, but as my use case is so limited, I’ll stick with it for this year.

Yeah that's right! Upcoming videos on vinyl mastering and another little surprise one too! Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed radiophonic, that was quite a long day that one 🤣
Cheers, I was using the ZV E10 a bit on a Zhiyun Crane M3 on this day, I didn't quite get it yet, I'm a bit wobbly, but getting the hang of it. But yeah in order to use a manual focus cam on gimbal you need a wireless follow focus etc, takes forever to set up blah blah... this is way easier. You just get the shot!

Good job @jgharding
I decided just a couple of days ago to bump up my ZV1 to gimbal duty for those occasions when I need reliable AF.
Matching it to the S1H and S5 will be even harder I suspect, but it’s currently my best and only option so…
I tried the S5 with small/light lens in the Crane M3 but it was pushing the limit really…not that I really know much (anything) about gimbals, but the ZV1 is a much better fit. And the results are always in focus which means I don’t wish to smash it to bits.

I very much enjoyed the Radiophonic Recordings one that you did recently so look forward to seeing this too if its on SOS at some point ?
