Geekbench is a much better benchmark of actual application performance and the initial scores are showing a 20% improvement.

    https://hothardware.com/news/iphone-12-pro-benchmark-geekbench-5-a14-bionic

What this does not show is how the Neural Engine portion of the A14 chip went from 8 cores to 16 cores, improving that aspect of the iPhone 12 performance by 80%.  There is much more to a smartphone's performance than just CPU and GPU benchmarks.

  2. This gives us an idea of what to look forward to with the GH6.  The BGH1 is a lot actually smaller and lighter than the GH5.

That doesn't really register on my "common sense" radar. They apparently say they'll keep the Olympus name, but just make surveillance cameras? I have nothing against surveillance cameras sporting Olympus optics as that would make sense in some ways, but I imagine there would be better avenues for enriching JIP... speaking only on speculation, of course.

There are 3 pages to the interview and on page 2 it mentions that the surveillance cameras would be a mid to long term new market in addition to the existing business.

On the other hand, in the future, it will be essential to find promising new markets that can utilize these strong technologies. From a medium- to long-term perspective, we are also considering various markets such as consumer products specialized for video and business such as surveillance cameras. It is said that it is necessary to find the optimal market by repeating challenges beyond the current Olympus camera lineup.

Yes this suggests thermal management is, shall we say, a somewhat discretionary decision by Canon.

Newsshooter cites Canon statement but I can’t find source. According to this statement Canon feel that they’ve addressed customer concerns. Gordon’s video suggests improvements but in the end I think most user’s chief concern will remain whether the camera actually overheats as described. Over to users to test it and have their say.

    https://www.newsshooter.com/2020/08/27/canon-r5-firmware-update/

“ According to Canon, ‘The effect of the new firmware addresses consumer concerns around repeated shooting capabilities and the need for improved cooling while switched on. We have and will continue to be transparent about recording limits for the EOS R5 and are confident that the camera performs to stated specifications.’ “

Here is a summary of Gordon's findings.

FW update to fix thermal issue coming tonight
    https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-r5-firmware-update-coming-in-the-next-24-hours/

Obviously it's not like they will release many of them so the moment of truth is tonight. Tomorrow we will know if the camera is usable or not.
Either they will go deeper in the same and shit on us with allowing something like 5min more recording and little shorter recovery (but overall still timer based), or they will make it right and make it non timer based but temperature based making this camera perfect or if they can't (because of poor thermal data access) then at least push the timer as much as they can according to extensive testing. From what we see in the test from Andrew and others, that camera should have no problem going to the recording limit of 30min and then recover in that time or less.

    Fingers crossed.

Better to keep our expectations very low.

"Update: A source that is testing the new firmware has warned me not to expect too much of a difference in thermal performance with the new firmware. I guess we’ll know for sure quite soon."

  6. Apparently a firmware update is coming tomorrow.

Just had CPS France pn the phone, very helpful person. He's going to contact Lexar and get back to me.

He also told me a new firmware is coming tomorrow, it's confidential, but it will mainly be to remove some of the "overheating" limitations. So maybe that will fix my issue as well?

  7. He definitely needs to toe the line when it comes to stating possible reason why.  I am surprised that many in that thread still didn't believe there was proof of a software timer.  At least Roger was very clear on that.

Canon has set a timer in EPROM. Where else would they write it? That was pretty obvious when we realized there was a software timer. We already knew taking out the internal battery (there are some other methods) erases EPROM.

The only questions are why and whether Canon will do something about it.

The response to the R5 has been very strong. Canon’s deliveries to US retailers have been extremely limited. We shipped out the first delivery in full last week and we expect to receive/ship our next delivery in 3-4 weeks....

    The latest from b&h.

In our August 4th update, we shared that Canon R5 preorders were very strong and Canon’s deliveries to US retailers have been extremely limited. We also promised to send regular updates. Since that note, we have not received any R5 deliveries from Canon. We expect to receive/ship our next delivery during the first week of September.

    Obviously the world wasn’t ready...

    It is now!

I can’t believe I never heard of this before...

Even more so, I can’t believe it obviously failed at some point and did not transform the industry ☹️

The problem was that sensors were advancing at at much greater pace when the GXR was available and that meant you needed to replace the whole sensor/lens module for improved IQ.  This might have worked better over the past 5 years due to lack of sensor development, although now it is too late to start something like this.

  10. I do hope that Nikon can survive but the latest Q1 results look incredibly bad.  Revenue was down 63% while Canon dropped 30% during the same period.  Nikon's market share must be well below 20% now and Nikon is now forecasting a 5B restructuring expense for later this year to slash costs. based on this new norm.  This is going to hit R&D and the future product pipeline beyond this year.

    https://nikonrumors.com/2020/08/06/nikon-q1-financial-results-are-out-2.aspx/

  11. Apparently, this is not Canon's first time for overheating during video.  Based on the below response Canon's PR has actually improved with the R5.  😂

    https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Announcements/PowerShot-G7-X-Mark-III-Notice-Regarding-Erroneous-Warning/m-p/279102#M409

"Canon has identified a phenomenon with the PowerShot G7X Mark III where the camera may display an erroneous temperature warning soon after the start of movie recording. This phenomenon can be resolved by performing the following steps:

                1) Power on the camera and Re-enter (or set) the Date, Time & Time Zone.

                2) Turn off the camera and leave powered off for at least 90 minutes.

                3) After at least 90 minutes, power the camera on again.

After following this procedure, the erroneous warning should not recur."

  12. If this is correct then a major recall would be required to fix this.

    http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/23457/canon-eos-r5-overheating-video-failure/p4

"New rumors from dealer I got

Canon R5 and R6 issues are in part related to severe bug with LSI not being able to lower frequency and enter sleep state where it is required. Chip is also unable to turn of parts that are not required now.

Problem can be with actual chip design with significant defect that require few millions USD to fix and make new masks."

And maybe it is just me, but if this camera is so close to overheating at all times, I have a hard time believing that it will never overheat just taking pictures. I know there haven't been any reports of this yet, but if 20-30 pictures pushed this camera to report 0min for video....that sounds like it may not make it through a 12hr wedding in Florida on a 95F day with 100% humidity.

This photographer normally uses a 5D and 1D for his motocross events and was able to use an R5 under similar conditions yesterday.  So it is possible to overheat the R5 taking only photos.

"I got to use an r5 today out at a Motocross event and well it turned off from only doing photos. This was using the ef to rf adapter and a 200mm f2. This was used for over a time period of 2.5-3 hrs and it was 86 degrees out. I’m glad that I didn’t buy it and needless to say my friend who did is pretty disappointed. I love 1d bodies"

"Yup. Only stills. I think we use two or three batteries.Full disclosure I leaned on the shutter a lot I fired off a few thousand rounds and which by the way I must say that tracking is pretty incredible. Auto shut off was at 1 min. Yes I know it was warm out but doing photos then looking at them and doing photos and looking at them you wouldn’t think that a camera would get so warm that it would shut off from stills."

"I had just got done shooting a burst and looked at the photos that were captured and the red thermometer was flashing and I proceeded to shoot more then the camera stopped. It took somewhere between 10-15 min to start working again. After this tho I quit using it"

  14. The lack of any leaks related to IBIS improvement would seem to confirm that Canon will have a noticeable lead here.  I do wonder if there is a tradeoff between heat and very good IBIS.  I also see there is no internal raw as well.

I don't think this will necessarily jump over the R5 for video.  There will be trade-offs with each body.  Sony may have an edge for pure video where IBIS is not important.  Canon may offer more for highbrid users with the greater MP or for those that have handheld video use.  Then there is also potential color differences and ease of use for editing
