1. Update to 1.1 official first, just to be safe. That is what I did. I think you can go straight from out of the box to hacked but until I try it myself, that is my advice.
 2.

Hmm, there's a 1080p version of Mario & Nette on YouTube. The beginning shots look a bit fuzzy, but I think they must have been shot at 720p because the rest is absolutely stunning! The softness isn't noticeable at all - it looks wonderful.
If it was the same one I saw, it was simply the 540p clip from the Canon site upscaled to 1080p by the YouTube Idiot. It was very misleading!
This is the one I watched: Canon EOS 5D Mark III: Mario and Nette (original short film) Definitely not 540p. Look at the details on his sweater. You can tell that it's from the original source at the end as well, where the lenses are shown (too sharp for anything else). It's certainly not as "sharp" as a GH2, maybe not even as detailed either, but it looks VERY cinematic if you ask me, and that's what people want, on the whole, I think. So Canon is delivering on that.
Dude, it is NOT 1080p. Look at the wide shots and titles. A fine fabric at macro looks detailed no matter what the resolution, be it 540p or 1080p!
 3. I really just care about resolution since the cameras are so close in other aspects. I have crop on GH2 don't need it on full frame really, since it makes noise worse. HDMI on D800 will be only thing that swings it for me. If the image quality through that is better than 5D Mark III it is big news. Unlikely but possible. However, it is a bad omen that Nikon have tried so hard to prevent footage shot via HDMI being out in the open. It is a big improvement for Nikon in video land though. They have clearly taken notice of the reason for such high 5D Mark II sales.
 4.
I think the 4K Canon is the video DSLR that we're expecting.  The only thing is, will it be as much as a Scarlet?  The other thing is the GH3.  It will take a while, but once that thing is hacked, game over.  ???
My thoughts as well. Although the 5D Mark III is a nice evolutionary improvement in a lot of areas, the 4K EOS is the one Canon's loyal customers deserve. I have a feeling it may be out of their hands though, because it will be aimed at RED and priced accordingly. Unless that is, they stick with plans to output to an MJPEG codec which is kind of ridiculous. I get the impression the EOS 4K is a strange product in many ways, because it supersedes the C300 in a stills camera body. If you look at Canon's profit margins on the C300, no sensible business would let that happen!
 5. That's normal. The codec on the GH2 is variable bit rate and it only uses the appropriate amount of data in the stream to support the amount of detail in each frame.
 6.
http://www.vimeo.com/38009435 Nikon could steal a few 5D Mark III pre-orders just by putting clearer information out and some sample clips. The Nikon D800 has a few tricks up its sleeve which may improve the soft moire ridden video quality we’ve seen so far from it. 7.
Even though the GH2's resolution is jaw dropping, I still find myself drifting back to Canon for the colors and tones.  My perfect camera would be a combination of both.
True I do prefer colour on the Canon DSLRs. 5D Mark 3 looks even better in this regard now, thanks to better codec.

 9. Patches updated. Just minor fixes, like the 720p mode being included in Vanilla. http://www.eoshd.com/gh2-patch-vault
 10. Regarding in-cam playback. It works  8) You just have to reboot camera after shooting a clip. Shooting then going direct to playback mode doesn't work. This is just how the hack is, for now. Feature of PTools not a fault with the patches.
 11. It isn't any better quality via HDMI than with the hack, so why bother?
 12.

Looking at the stills of the ferris wheel, I saw the resolution of the mk3 similar to what a mk2 would look like with a VAF5d2. Si I think its what canon did to reduce color aliasing and moire, they placed an agressive OLPF.
Surely not, an OLPF that strong would be unacceptable for stills. I suspect - but certainly can't prove - that they're doing something like 3x3 binning now instead of the old 3x1 binning + skip two lines. That would jive with the reduced aliasing and better low light performance we're seeing as well as the minor differences in resolution. The sensor also looks to be scanning faster which explains the reduced rolling shutter (they didn't double the number of output channels for no reason). All in all these look like simple, common sense improvements, nothing revolutionary but still good to have
Nice analysis. What trick would you say the GH2 has up her sleeve to get the video resolution it does from a 18MP native chip? What is the next step up from 3x3 binning? My guess is that the GH2's processor is reading out a 4MP or even 8MP 4K image from the sensor and downscaling intelligently to 2MP on the image processor itself. I cannot think of any other way it would be better than so many cameras that do binning on the sensor like the NEX 7, 5D Mark III, Nikon D800, etc.
 13.
So which way should we go? 5DMII+VAF 5D2 or 5DM3
Depends if you need the 5DM3 advantages and have a spare $3500 as opposed to $2500 (with VAF). Advantages are: - Better HDMI for monitoring, no 540p drop nonsense - Sharp corners with wide lenses since no need to fix moire with VAF 5D2 - Better low light performance - Timecode - ALL-I codec and higher bitrates - Reduced rolling shutter - 3:2 screen - Function button near shutter button - Headphone jack - Manual audio controls and meters (without need for Magic Lantern) - Probably better DR Those are off the top of my head, maybe some I've missed. Worth $1000? I think so.
 14. I just use generic ones for c-mount on the GH2. They work fine but if your infinity focus is critical they may not be accurate enough. Any better suggestions welcome guys...
 15.
Do we have 1080p videos from the D800 yet?
Yes and they are as soft as 5D but with awful aliasing and moire. HDMI output on that camera might be a different bag.
 16.
We deal with the short comings of DSLRs because they produce great images and are cheap. However, if you want the amazing video features, expect to pay more. The 5D2 was over $2,000. I expect the C-DSLR to at least double that.
It really does depend, market and tech both moving so fast. GH2 is utterly mind-blowing for the price.
 17. Why would an anti-aliasing filter help rolling shutter? No it doesn't have an affect.
 18. There's more false detail on the 5D Mark II. No doubt 5D Mark III is better for cleanness of the resolution but disappointed it is not at GH2 level. On a $3500 DSLR, I mean c'mon FFS.

 20. Don't forget Sony. They will have a full frame camera out by Photokina 2012 and they have come on a hell of a lot with DSLR video lately. Sure I am disappointed the 5D Mark III resolution is as soft as 5D Mark II but at least moire, aliasing, codec, rolling shutter and low light ALL improved. And it no longer drops to 540p over HDMI. It is a refinement of a great camera. The price is too high though, I agree.
 21. It plays back fine for me on same cards. Not touched the audio bitrate? I'll look into it.
 22. Good point Matthew. I don't entirely believe the reason there isn't clean HDMI at 1080p is because of lack of grunt. Even the 7D does it. Canon protecting C300 again? "If you don't cannibalise yourself, someone else will". One word: D800.
 23. See - http://www.eoshd.com/comments/index.php/topic,369.0.html
 24. It is good enough for many many great shoots to come, but it is definitely a lot softer on fine details than the GH2 is capable of. It isn't any better than 5D Mark II in terms of actual resolution. And this is a £3000 camera body. It took 3.5 years to do this??
 25. For the price I was expecting it to at least scale 22MP cleanly to 2MP, as the GH2 can scale 18MP to 2MP almost perfectly with resolution almost nip and tuck with a still scaled down in Photoshop. The sensor in the GH2 is clearly optimised for video. The sensor in the 5D3 is clearly not so much. A half hearted effort to add 1MP to 21MP to get even binning. Not sure what else they've changed. This is an expensive camera. And there is nothing in-between this and the C300 from Canon. It is however - and this is important to remember - possibly the best full frame camera on the market for video. But the D800 is sure to give it some tough competition now. It isn't the walk over I thought it would be.
