  1. The G7 body seems eligible for cash back at WEX now, £267 after £200 cash back!! http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-panasonic-lumix-dmc-g7-digital-camera-body/p1573036 How bad must sales be for them to be offering this kind of discount across their entire range??
  2. Yeah think it is a long interview, only seems to be broken up into smaller chunks on YouTube so will check out Netflix! I think whenever the Japanese photographic giants do try to innovate the product doesn't sell because they don't back it up with the right software or marketing. Apple were quite good at those!! Sony are a bit like Samsung... spec spec spec. Ironic thing is the NX1's 'soul' and handling is much nicer than the A7R II!!
  3. Just shoot Ultra HD, there's no real resolution gain using the DCI mode on the NX1. You may as well crop and stretch the Ultra HD to DCI in post if you want the 1.9:1 aspect ratio.
  4. So in other words the 8bit LOG is broken, kaput. It shouldn't be. No need for it to be. Canon LOG is 8bit on their cameras. Works fine. GH4 V-LOG is 8bit internally. Works fine.
  5. Partner with Blackmagic for the processor. ProRes a-go-go. Partner with Magic Lantern for the firmware updates. They didn't seem to have a problem giving us one for raw video did they?! +1 for full size HDMI. I think just with those 3 relatively simple changes it would sell to pros for $3000.
  6. I have always wondered what is responsible for the degradation of noise grain texture (it's so blotchy over uncompressed HDMI) compared to the raw sensor data, it can't be compression.
  7. Indeed it did https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/readme/260ef9743c584b5ea4af28af63945cfa
  8. It's more about the codec actually. H.265 effectively doubles your bitrate due to 2x greater efficiancy. 70 = 140Mbit/s The NX1's codec is able to hold onto more detail, where H.264 on the a7R II goes a bit muddy due to compression. The RX10 II's codec is muddier still, probably due to a cheaper processor. So in short... definitely more 'real' detail on the NX1 compared to the A7R II and A7S II.
  9. Depends on the subject but say if you've got a big blue sky in the shot, all modes have banding. It is just that in S-LOG3 you have a LOT more than in S-LOG 2. The 'normal' picture profiles have a BIT less than S-LOG 2 but it isn't really worth sacrificing your dynamic range for. AF is still terrible with Canon lenses on the A7S II w/ adapters A7R II is much better (at least in good light). You will want to keep your 5D purely for AF, it is that bad on the A7S II. The Sony lenses are better but still not to the standard set by the A7R II or other mirrorless cameras, i.e. GH4, E-M1, NX1. Don't know! You're welcome!
  10. Don't know about the Ninja but it does do a clean 1080p HDMI output. Here it is on my Odyssey 7Q+ The clean 4K works as well. This is NX1 firmware v1.4 First you need a card in the slot. For some strange reason. Then you need to set HDMI to 1080p in the menu. Then you need to press the disp. key to get rid of the icons.
  11. Here's Dan over at Newsshooter, confirming what I saw with the LOG profile. http://www.newsshooter.com/2015/11/15/the-curious-case-of-the-leica-sl-going-hands-on-with-the-camera-confirms-issues-with-log-gamma/ We both saw the problem in less than 20 mins with the camera in a store. Question is how did Leica miss the problem in over 24 months of engineering?
  12. As a monitor, either. As a recorder you need clean HDMI otherwise camera icons will be dotted along the side of your images.
  13. I have a great idea. Why don't we used the English definition of the word indistinguishable. It will really help readers out. OK we get it. You prefer the A7R II. Moving on! Next question!
  14. Indistinguishable is a term I wouldn't use personally speaking. Download the original file. The aliasing is a concern for me. They are the same price so if you want FF 4K why cripple yourself? Forgetting the fantastic 42MP stills for a moment, bearing in mind both for video are roughly the same price, A7S II even a bit cheaper and with the bonus of 1080p 120fps), you'd have to really want that reduced rolling shutter (which you can fix trivially in post anyway) to put up with the aliasing.
  15. I think I have a different point of view. The A7R II is really a Super 35mm camera. The A7S II is really full frame. The 4K in full frame on the A7R II is very poor in low light, can't even do ISO 3200 nicely and the moire & aliasing will always bite you when you least expect it. So Super 35mm vs full frame, very different look. Speed Booster Ultra is a good solution for the A7R II but I still think it looks pretty different. Looking deeply into it at the moment with some real world shooting.
  16. No I repeat... that is via the 4K SDI input only. It does not accept a 4K signal via HDMI. I've tried on multiple cameras including GH4 and A7S II.
  17. Yeah it's a personal thing. Personally I never use peaking or zebras. Hell, I rarely even look at the histogram. Just give me a good monitor that is sharp as hell and accurate.
  18. Blade is only a 720p screen and it doesn't do 1080/60p recording either. Also it only takes SSDs. Doesn't record to your existing camera SDXC cards. So factor a few of them into the price.
  19. Very nice! These will be collectors items one day for sure
  20. Bonus! It has a very nice playback mode with touch screen scrub controls. Yep D5500 same as D5300 for HDMI. A shame they have not fixed this yet. The PIX looks nice but it is $1200!! What if you don't need the 4K recording but still want 1080p ProRes and a great screen to monitor off? Video Assist it is.
  21. Actually the NX1 nicely downscales the 4K internally to 1080p for the HDMI output. I've tried recording that with the Video Assist and it is pretty decent quality. Better than the internal 1080p! So get the Video Assist if you need better quality 1080p from your NX1 and can't be bothered with 4K or H.265. Also the 1D C's 4K downscaled in-camera to feed the clean HDMI output is rather lovely. 1.3x crop of sensor like the 4K, but without the massive file sizes or MJPEG to contend with Video Assist good for capturing that. It is VERY sharp and clean with very little weirdness going on. Gradients are very smooth too. Looks like 10bit luma. I also have a Nikon D5500 at the moment but not sure about that, it may have to go back because the HDMI seems stuck at 29.97p or needs pulldown from interlaced signal. Can't get native 24p or 25p out of it. Review of the D5500 is in the works by the way, aside from that issue it is rather nice for a cheap 1080p camera. Very small and light for a DSLR.
  22. No, that's only via SDI not HDMI. It's $495. There's your excuse. Or were you expecting the Odyssey 7Q+!
  23. Out of the blue Blackmagic sent me the new Video Assist, which isn't quite yet shipping at B&H (pre-orders are available) or CVP but will be soon. Here is an early look at the device and what it can do. Read the full article
