RIP David Lynch
eatstoomuchjam and 2 others reacted to Clark Nikolai for a topic
I read about him meditating and how that helped him organize his thoughts better as well as get him in touch with his inner self and inner ideas. He also would trust his dreams and intuition. There's a story told (on YouTube) by the musician who did the theme for Twin Peaks, Angelo Badalamenti. Lynch described the mood and Badalamenti did some initial improv. Lynch said, great, record that. Badalementi wanted to work on it more, that this was just a start but Lynch said it's perfect. He was into the first thing. Much like beat poetry, stream of consciousness ideas I guess. I'm impressed by him being able to do that because some times when I'd worked intuitively it turned out to be a social faux pas so I tried to avoid that after that. I remember seeing Eraserhead at a repertory theatre. Someone who had seen in Vancouver told us that all the vampire punks (later called goths) go to it so we had to dress like vampires to watch it. So we did. Later we went for doughnuts so there was a table of vampires having doughnuts. A young woman came to ask us if there was some event going on or something. We played dumb and said that, "no, nothing was going on." The movie just created a mood that was depressing, stressful and entertaining at the same time. The line "Strangest darn things, but they're new!" I repeated for years. (The old guy says that about the mini chicken.)3 points -
They will indeed say nothing about Panasonic. But we all know the SL3S is just going to be a rebadged Lumix camera. That it's relatively easy to reverse engineer the logic to conclude we'll probably see the Panasonic version of the SL3 released six-ish months later.2 points

Leica SL3 / SL3-S
Ninpo33 and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
All confirms what I have been saying about Panasonic soft-quit of high-end camera market! Leica are charging $5300 for essentially same sensor as a 2018 Sony a7 iii (the 'basic model' at the time, and 7 years old now). Panasonic have been unwilling or unable to find a replacement better spec / faster 24 megapixel sensor in all of those 7 years since the original S1 which again has the same fundamental sensor as the a7 iii, with phase-detect AF turned off via licensing agreement. The SL3-S is another me-too full frame mirrorless camera which cannot stand apart from the competition in any meaningful way. If Panasonic could design a proper camera body, they'd do an SL3-S with lighter materials and a bit smaller, like Sony do, but for half the price. Then it would be fine. As it is, whole thing is a mess and I don't think it's going to sell. Also on the SL3, the 60mp Sigma Fp-L and Sony a7 IV sensor is from a similar era, 2018-19. So unless Panasonic is reserving the latest sensor technology for their cameras and Leica in the region of $5-7k gets the old shit, which doesn't seem to make much sense, I don't think we'll be seeing any high-end cameras from Panasonic this year or potentially ever.2 points -
Well, my little black X-M5 finally arrived from Japan and wow, it’s tiny. Had some fun rigging it up as a tiny little micro cinema cam today LOL. USB C dummy battery arrives tomorrow and a couple little accessories to mount the Ninja V+ in a way that doesn’t look too ridiculous. Only complaint so far is the smallrig cage for it is a little overpriced and doesn’t come in all black. Just the strange steampunk looking retro vibes.2 points

RIP David Lynch

The great David Lynch passed away. Here's a trailer of one of my favorite films he made: More recently, he made his weather reports... I'm thinking of a long, long joke, but I'm sure it gave him a good reason to make something (wish I could do that sometimes). He will be missed.1 point -

David Lynch, what an artist! Like David Bowie, he leaves so much behind in regards of body and spirit of work. Now their deep beautiful souls are having a fxxing fantastic coffee together and we are listening to their conversation. The two ingenious artists and humanbeings will keep inspiring and touching hearts, minds and souls. If you haven't watched "Elephant Man" or "Straight Story" yet, a must watch. I started Twin Peaks two days ago. What a marvel. I didn't expect the news a day later.1 point -
That's absolutely beautiful, thank you. Talk about raw talent from Badalamenti. Now Lynch and Badalementi in the same production? That's really special. It's not an exaggeration to say that the music of Twin Peaks is another character of the series, equally as important as every other character.1 point

Leica SL3 / SL3-S
eatstoomuchjam reacted to MrSMW for a topic
The S1R has better build quality over the S5II, better EVF, better rear LCD, MUCH better shutter mech and the 47mp sensor was...and still is great. Where it's not so great is 'average to good' AF for stills, but very limited AF for video. Has a great 5k SOOC Natural profile, but no log. Body design of the S1H was much better, albeit slightly beefier. I personally would be 100% happy to have the the 61mp sensor from the SL3/A7RV in the S1H body and would buy instantly. Ditto, the S5II/SL3-S sensor in the S1H body. My issue with LUMIX has always been as above, - the right sensors in the wrong bodies! I'd buy one of each instantly...but maybe I'd be their only sales, I dunno 🤪1 point -
An S5II-R then? IMO, the body, shutter mech, rear LCD and EVF would need to be upgraded because none of these elements are 'flagship' worthy.1 point

Even though I couldn't say I loved (or even liked a lot) a majority of his stuff after (and somewhat including) Lost Highway, I loved that Lynch was out there doing stuff. Blue Velvet is easily one of my favorite films of all time and I still can't see anything that says Heineken without briefly thinking in my head (or saying out loud) "Fuck that shit. Pabst! Blue! Ribbon!"1 point -

Both Lynch and Blue Velvet were one of the staples of my film studies days at uni back in 90-92. RIP old fella.1 point -

I just watched the PetaPixel preview for it which was, ironically, fairly photo-focused and didn't include the Jordan section. But my jaw dropped a bit when Chris mentioned that the ES readout time is 25ms. 25ms! On a 6K $5,000+ video-focused body released in 2025! Also, the H.26whatever 6K that it records internally is only 4:2:0! What's a guy gotta' do to get some chroma subsampling around here? (Shoot ProRes, I guess, I think that's also internal). Since the Z6 III has come up a few times in this discussion already, its rolling shutter is <10ms. And sure, rolling shutter isn't the most important or only spec for a camera, but... heck, the R5 II has something like 13ms in 8K! Even knowing that Leica's luxury brand pricing is detached from reality, it seems just brazen to release a camera with specs that were pretty good 3 years ago (when the S5 II was released) at this price point! Guess they need to get some YouTubers to release a video that looks just like all their other videos and then insist that there's some special magic to the Leica image. Someone call Pooter McCubbins or Cam Mackackackacky STAT!1 point -
I think you misunderstood my post. I was saying that whatever the SL3-S ends up being at this weeks announcement could give us a clue of what to possibly expect out of the S1H2. Of course Leica isn’t going to mention LUMIX. Ever.. But the normal flow of product releases has been all messed up between the two companies so at this point, who knows…1 point

I think it will need to be a hell of a camera simply to exist…which may explain why we have heard next to nothing about it. If one will ever exist… I’m still not sure about the latter but think it more likely than not and if one ever does appear, probably last chance saloon for them at that level? The ‘S2R’ seems far more likely doesn’t it and ‘should’ be a re-bodied SL3. I have my fingers crossed for that for mid-Spring latest or it won’t work for me this year. Or possibly ever. (Pure business perspective). For video I have needs and they are covered. For photo I have both needs and wants and those are technically also already covered, but I want to have everything within one system ideally.1 point

What is Lumix thinking?!
IronFilm reacted to eatstoomuchjam for a topic
Sorry if I wasn't clear! I meant that since there are rumors about Leica releasing an SL3-S (which would almost certainly have Panasonic guts, just as the SL3 does) and because there are rumors that Panasonic will be releasing two bodies soon (one of which will likely be the S1R II which puts SL3 guts in a Panasonic body), it's not out of the question that whatever is in the SL3-S will be in Panasonic's S1H II. I'd say that Panasonic sales don't meaningfully compete with Leica sales - both are niche companies and Leica is much more the "luxury" brand. However, if Panasonic release an S1H II, it will be competing with their own S5 II which is already really good (not to mention the original S1H which is also really good). The S1H, when released, was like $4k. At almost 2.5x the price of an S5 II and still more than 2x the price of the S5 IIx, an S1H II is going to have to be a hell of a camera to ship more than a few units (assuming the price stays similar).1 point -
Do you mean a potential S1HII vs a S5II or SL3-S vs SL2-S? Both are pretty niche aren't they as in 'we' may love the S1H but in terms of global sales next to the likes of the equivalent Sony & Canon options, it's not exactly been a massive seller. Leica is just niche full stop and that is part of their thing, ie, being small (as a company), desirable and expensive whereas LUMIX can't play in that arena. Same as Hassie. They can both play that heritage card even if one of them is owned by DJI. Leica could get away with simply having the SL3 body and the tilt screen over the old SL2 body in order to create an SL3-S. If LUMIX were simply to stick the internals of the S5II in the S1H body, they would be slaughtered. Personally I think that would be a great camera and I'd have one over the S5II but the Armchair YouTube Authorities would destroy it. Other than a handful of LUMIX diehards. Any S1H mk II HAS to be more. What the 'more' is, is the big question...1 point
