    Nikon Zr is coming

The h.265 itself is not the problem. Its that you can't turn off the NR with h.265, and in low light its too much. Nikon didn't change this even after all firmware updates they did for Z9/Z8/Z6III, so its safe to say its not going to happen with Expeed 7. Probably because power consumption will be noticeably higher if the encoder has to compress noisy image.
  5. I noticed that in Cinema Tools comparison between Nikon Z6 III and Sony FX3 in the first section both cameras use x265 codecs. Watched it on big OLED TV and didn't notice any visible differences in color. IMHO Nikon x265 is perfectly usable option if maximum compression and smaller files are needed. If still in doubt about x265 quality, ProRes 10 bit 4:2:2 at 4K is good alternative. Here are the compression ratios of all Nikon codecs in Z8. We can easily extrapolate them to Z6 III / Zr https://zxi.mytechroad.com/blog/photography/nikon-z8-prores-prores-raw-bitrate-and-compression-ratio/ NRAW / RED RAW normal has a compression ratio of 7.5 which is comparable to BRAW 8:1. NRAW / RED RAW high quality - 4.5 compression ratio comparable to BRAW 5:1. Those are very good compression ratios. ProRes HQ 422 10Bit - 5.2 ProRes RAW - 2. We have several RAW or non RAW codecs and compression options. Last Z6 III firmware version 2.0 brings shutter angle. Z6 III has wave form too. The few options that are missing are open gate, anamorphic desqueez and LUTs. I don't need the first two and can have the last one with external monitor. Overall Nikon Zr / Z6 III are great cameras and quite affordable compared to the image quality in video they give.
  6. After all the fuss about the ZR h265, with some youtubers including Gerald Undone, high claim that the ZR h265 was unusable. I was very worried, but also perplexed because, even with my D750 24mbit 1080p footage, the h264 and nowadays Nikon H265 had been very robust and good. But until now, very few actual footage in h265 to make an opinion. Until I saw this test. Guess what, all those BShitters were exaggerating as always dunking on Nikon. In this Chinese test, from about 15.30, you have nearly every footage in h265 and the quality is good, even the 4k 120 fps in apsc. I can see every hair of those girls dancing even with YouTube compression on my 65 inch TV. I don't think you need much more for your Bride or CEO shots.
  7. I still have problem with Gerald Undone, and this is exemplified with Canon C50 vs Nikon ZR review. I don't question his numbers, but how he interpreted them for his bias. Man pissed on the ZR t every corner, but excused the worst or the worst for Canon. The simple example is the ZR micro hdmi vs Canon C50 lack of IBIS. Yes it is an inconvenience the ZR doesn't have a full size hdmi, but it can be remedied with a 100 USD cage plus lock. But what about the lack of IBIS, you would need a full set of big supporting gear. Either a tripod, shoulder mount or gimbal. But hey, his excuse is that he talked with some first AC, and they told him that they prefer the sensor to be locked, as if the C50 principal use will be on movie sets!!!!! He is revolting, how dare Nikon put cinema on the ZR, but does he think that the ZR/C50/Fx3 will be primarily use on cinema sets!!! Is he crazy, 99.9% of their use will be in events, corporate videos, weddings, reportage, social media content creation etc. At the top you will find them used on small to average advertising production, short films, small to no budget films. And in rare case as specialist camera like crash cam, in higher end production. But again in those 99.9% cases, stabilization is a big big plus for those production. But hey, Nikon dared to put Cinema on the ZR. I mean a camera that has better image than 90% of digital camera just 5 years ago.
  8. Yep, looks more like it. It is good if they supply this as you can get a 2TB for about same price as a 512 GB CFexpress card. But you are still left with gigantic files if you want to achieve your work. Perhaps the best solution would be in Nraw normal, then rename them to RED. Or use the Nikon RED luts.
  9. Proxies were an established part of our workflow for a long time, really the only way to get complex edits done. These days though using M1 laptops and desktops we haven't had much of a need for proxies, Davinci cuts 10bit 4k no problem.
  10. You got a point there. Nevertheless, it's a purchase I'd like to get - for a novice videographer.

  12. You said you used auto exposure, so the lack of noise, in the "underexposed" image, is probably due to auto shutter and/or "native/base" iso.

    Nikon Zr is coming

Among all the firmware requests by YouTubers and RED shooters, this one was almost out of the radar. Which tells me is an indirect response to whining about raw file sizes. Which means an internal lower bitrate R3D NE became even less likely.

  15. You’d think so wouldn’t you? But this is a small theme park in regional Australia. I must be doing something right they keeP coming back to me 🙂 but yeah I’d love to find a way to get more keepers. I’ll look into hire
  16. Not in video though: 13mm, 24mm, 48mm, 100mm, 200mm and I suppose macro too? As far as reported here, it seems the Detail app can record multicam, but... ...from any of those different cameras, i.e., distinct focal lengths, we wish??! How many can it record simultaneously? Only two of them, just the front and rear, I guess? Here's an informative overview: The other point is: Is the external SSD usable for direct recording, or just for backup with Detail app? And what about editing also allowed by this app?

  18. Are there any good 7” monitors besides the Atomos Shinobi 7 that support Nikon’s N-log? I know SmallHDs don’t but not sure about Portkeys BM7 or others. Thanks!
  19. A weight tolerance of ±3% for drones classified as C0 is specified in the European standard prEN 4709-001:2021, developed by ASD-STAN. This standard defines the technical requirements and verification methods for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) intended for operation in the open category within the European Union, in accordance with Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945. Compliance with this standard ensures conformity with the safety and operational rules established under the EU UAS regulatory framework. Therefore, the operation of the DJI Mini 5 Pro is compliant across EU countries. The ±3% tolerance also permits the use of a ND filter (~1,12 g). And even an anamorphic adapter, who knows? ; ) Freewell for previous models is ~ 3 g... So, all is fine for DJI Mini 5 Pro operators within the EU. To complete the picture, more details can be obtained from these sources: https://dronexl.co/2025/09/23/easa-dji-mini-5-pro-c0-status-weight https://www.slashcam.com/news/single/DJI-Mini-5-Pro-weighs-over-250g---but-still-remain-19559.html Also covering the situation in other regions, namely the main Western countries: https://www.techradar.com/cameras/drones/dji-mini-5-pro-drone-laws Specifically UK: https://www.caa.co.uk/drones/getting-started-with-drones-and-model-aircraft/drone-code/drone-code-overview/
  20. I've been using a "Portkenstein" - a mix of Portkeys LEYE II and Zacuto eyepiece - for some time. It's the best cheap solution but requires 3d printing the adapter and manually assembling the whole thing. Not a big deal, but requires some patience and some time. It's also a bit heavy once you add a Canon LP battery, not ideal for a lightweight rig on long days of solo filming - I make documentaries and tv reportages. So I bought this new viewfinder (hdmi+ usb version) on Alixpress for 200€ after taxes and duties and it looks fairly good for now. On my Lumix s5IIx (50hz) the HDMI power is not enough so I put a super lightweight, lipstick shaped power bank on my rig to give it usb power. After some time I can unplug the USB cable and the viewfinder keeps working, strange but true. If I turn the camera on and off again, I need to plug in the Usb cable again. I think I will just keep it connected all the time. It's super small and light, the image is fair if you don't care about perfect color accuracy. The image is also a little too big so you have to slightly adjust the eye position to see it all. I will do some real world test this week but so far it looks like a decent compromise for lightweight work. One good upgrade, as another forum member suggested, would be to replace the bulky HDMI cable with a female adapter glued to the viewfinder body.
  21. Do you know if anyone has posted raw files to download? I would like to get an idea between the C50 and the ZR.

  23. sounds to me like you’re doing a shoot that’s meant to be done by multiple crew members as a 1 man band. i already think you’re setting yourself up to fail. Depending on what you’re invoicing and whatever budget you’re going with, you might even skew expectations further for clients and other workers in the field.
  24. What about overheating, guys? Aluminium looks like a win-win bet: (in Portuguese language)
  25. Nothing against the man (never had, and my previous posts speak for themselves, so I cannot be under any suspicion — quite the contrary : P). But Stephen, for someone who claims to be just a simple tech reviewer making a living out of it, while simultaneously having nothing to do with filmmaking, and then someone else sees Philip Bloom promoting GU LUTs (!) — as with the most recent DJI bird (Mini 5 Pro)... well, that really makes me laugh! : ) And yet, to still be frank, never has a PB video looked so bad :- )

If you gain something in SN ratio, sure you lose something in details. Its almost impossible to extract "true" 4k bayer from 6k bayer.
