Ok I bought the C500 mkII. Can't wait to create the first project with it. First tests the AF is so much smoother then my S5II, maybe not faster, but it feels more natural. As does the image. The dynamic range is not crazy better over an S5 or S5II it seems. The highlight rolloff seems smoother though. The internal Nd's are fun too.

Panasonic Lumix G7 vs. S5II, used as camcorders
EduPortas replied to John Matthews's topic in Cameras
That looks really good. The G7 has much nicer and warmer colors. For a doc-style scenario it could be a great option. Other than the obvious jello effect of the tortutre test it could stand up to any modern day camera. As we've said in this forum quite a lot: from about 2010-2018 Panny was a true disrupter in the videocamera world. -
It’s just ‘advanced juggling’… 3 balls to 4, to 5, to 6, to 7, to 8, to 9, to tea cups and saucers, to live chainsaws. Which are on fire. Welcome to Cirque du Soleil Weddings!

I admire your ability to manage so much gear at a wedding!

Panasonic Lumix G7 vs. S5II, used as camcorders
TrueIndigo replied to John Matthews's topic in Cameras
Thanks for the kind words, John. I remember an old friend of mine, who is a very experienced DP, once said - with regard to "unmotivated camera movement" - that you "shouldn't move without a reason". For the purpose of the camera test I just enjoyed finding the CinemaScope compositions and letting the action (a very busy location) move within the frame instead. I now have a GH5 and a S5, but my use of IBIS is still very modest - it's more useful to me to simply iron out the micro jitters in my hands than to try to emulate a gimble. -
Depending on price, I might have been interested when I was shopping for my S9 the second time round (first time black, current red) but I wouldn't trade now purely for looks as I bet the financials would work out close to €1000 not in my favour. I do wish however that more companies would launch cameras with more options than just black! For one thing, it soaks up sunlight and therefore heat in the sun/Summer, whereas something metallic like silver or titanium reflect it. The Zf has some nice colour options, particularly the stone grey and their red is much better than Lumix's S9 options which are a bit too bright.

All music at soundimage.org is now free for commercial use
Eric Matyas replied to Eric Matyas's topic in Cameras
BIG NEWS! I've created a brand new preview video that contains a sampling of my music tracks that you'll find in my Ogg Music Mega Pack. You can check it out here: https://youtu.be/W7yQVscjqUM?si=wD1XqAOJ6_Lswgqw PACKS THAT GROW WITH YOU I think the coolest thing about the music packs isn't just that they keep growing as I add new tracks to them, but that Gumroad allows me to notify users so they can download the newest additions as they come out. I really like the idea of music packs that grow along with the people who are using them. 🙂 https://soundimage.org/ogg-game-music-mega-pack/ Mp3s ARE ALWAYS FREE That said, this week's new Mp3 music tracks are on my Action 2 page: "Fantasy Racing Game Menu_LoFi" "Mech Street Fighters_LoFi" "Wild West Coast Racing_LoFi" https://soundimage.org/action-2/ As always, my Mp3 tracks are 100% free to use with attribution. Enjoy! -
Panasonic is obviously trying to appeal to the more retro/classic/stylish area of the market, like it has in the past with silver/grey and black versions of some M43 cameras. Certainly looks more stylish than the plain black version (my S9 is a black and red version, which is more at the 'fun' end of the market).

Panasonic Lumix G7 vs. S5II, used as camcorders
ac6000cw replied to John Matthews's topic in Cameras
I don't know the 'industry definition' of it, but I would think a 'locked down' or 'locked off' shot is just that - the camera can't/doesn't move at all. If you pan a camera, it's a 'panning' shot (tilting is just panning it vertically instead of horizontally, so I guess comes under the same name). -
This one is probably not discounted, but oh boy looks good. https://www.l-rumors.com/panasonic-japan-announced-the-new-titanium-lumix-s9-edition/

pardon my ignorance, is it still a locked down shot if you pan or tilt while on a tripod or is it called a different type of shot ? -
Now thats, what you call vintage glass.

John Matthews replied to John Matthews's topic in Cameras
Very nice. Your video exemplifies something interesting about the G7. I especially take note that you locked down every shot. I'm fairly certain that someone doing this today would have left the tripod at home and everything would be with IBIS. It looks great the way you did it. As I demonstrated earlier, you can easily use stabilization in post on a wide lens and get decent results. However, the standard should be the locked-down shot. - Yesterday

I just wish they had kept Raw, Jpeg only is a bit limiting.

It started with the YT AI slop science channels. It has progressed to AI generated "Let's Play" slop content for children. They WILL start using it to make commercials... ...then move on to making kids shows for your kids iPads so you can go to work and forget about parenting... ...then endless Netflix AI slop TV shows for the parents... ...parents that went in to debt to go to college but didn't learn anything because they used chatGPT to write their papers and get their grades... ...who then go into critical jobs without knowing jack shit... ...which they will then lean heavily on chatGPT to do their jobs (because that's what they learned in college). The lucky ones will die in the next drone war powered by Anduril.

Camera prices – Have the Japanese taken leave of their senses?
EduPortas replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Photography has always been an expensive hobby. Since the SLR days there has been a clear mark of status associated with the best gear from the best brands. Wanting the best implied paying a lot more. Camera companies have clearly segmented and re-segmented the "intent" you mentioned. Want the best hybrid video-cam with RF lens? Better pony-up for the R1, R3, R5M2 or R5c. Want the speed demon? There's your R7. Want a slow full-framer but with some limitations for video, as in no IBIS? Here you go with the R8. A considerably better camera and videocamera but no as expensive as the R1 and upper tier? Ahh, we've got your R6M2. Every company out there does the exact same thing. So even if you are NOT looking for status, it's implied by your choice of gear. The only way to eschew the game is by going full retro. And I mean really retro for gear NOBODY wants to use and can't even be used with modern computers easily. I'm looking at you MiniDV, Hi8, and such. -

I still have my G7 -- I got rid of my GH1, nice though it was back in the day, but kept this little camera; the simplicity of using it remains an attraction. This was my first camera test with it: -
presumably @Andrew Reid will jump all over it, if it takes you off site.

I clicked, ended there:

If you hover over the link it shows up as two colours. the front part looks legit, the middle will probably take you off site if you click on it, the end appear legit. It does look a bit sus from what little i know of such things.
-
Why fake? I don't get... Sounds legit question. FX30 all way round exactly for the reasons pointed out above. Used less than 24 hours ago. Practically in a daily basis BTW. The options for lenses are a must. Handling new & affordable anamorphic AF glass these days. Combo works like a charm! :- ) Sirui 20mm T/1.8 shot on FX30 (from native 4K50p 10-bit 4:2:2 SOOC with AI removal*) May 25, 2025

AFAIK, up to at least 60p, the GH5/GH5ii/GH5s/G9/GH6/GH7/G9ii read out the whole sensor width and sufficient height to allow high-quality re-sampling/processing down to (e.g.) FHD and UHD, which probably helps with moire suppression. And yes, the high pixel density versus lens resolution also helps (plus diffraction softening at smaller apertures). I like reasonably chunky grips too - it's a major reason why I've never bought an E-M5 iii or OM-5 (and bought used E-M1 ii and iii instead, despite the larger size and weight). I've got a Sirui grip for the S9 (which is deeper than the SmallRig version), but if I've got the 20-60mm kit lens on it I don't add the grip as there's enough lens barrel to sit nicely in my left hand. The grip is useful with the 18-40mm lens though.
