  4. On a phone the purpose of RAW video for me ideally would not to actually capture to storage in RAW but use the RAW10 uncompressed output of the sensor without Apple's processing, as a way to bypass the stock look and bake that uncompressed "Digital Bolex" look into an H.265 recording with the raw data just a temporary thing held in a buffer for the LUT and H.265 to work it's magic on in realtime. Sure LOG and ProRes RAW is great if you enjoy spending hours in Resolve and want the ultimate in flexibility but then the question is why choose a smartphone at all for that purpose when so many better options exist. What I want from a phone is the RAW look without the storage and grading hassle, and it's needed more on a phone than on any other type of camera because the stock Android and Apple looks are consumer-looking dialed-up HDR TV soap opera hell. I am working on a few iPhone apps at the moment and actually one way to bypass the stock video look is to apply a LUT to the rec.709 in realtime that adds back the tonality and character... a little like EOSHD Pro Color for Panasonic back in the day. Raw would be more ideal for this as the high digital sharpness isn't baked in.
  5. curious, on the S1Rii are you shooting anything in 50/60p or all 24/25P My S1Rii's overheat in 60P! Looking forward to your thoughts on the 28-105/2.8, oddly I keep trying to decide between it and the 24-45/1.8
  6. Sure, I found this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ60DbFDk9I DIGILOG implements the Study of film texture: Grain, Halation and Rendition of Details thesis by Clément Montmea which is also used in the Arri Film Lab plugin for DaVinci. Seems like the math is readily available in the PDF. Perhaps it's of use to you.
  7. Mid season update… Well it’s more towards the end of the season actually with my 4th to last job happening this weekend… Never did swap one of the S1Rii’s for an S1ii in the end and had a rearrangement instead which has proved to be nigh on perfect for my needs. My pair of S1Rii’s I put back into workhorse hybrid unit roles and that is where they excel with superb photo & video results matched with primes or zooms. Not quite Sony levels of AF, but otherwise I cannot find fault with them other than perhaps battery life could be a little better, but they are hardly trash in this regard and battery swaps every now and again are hardly a big deal. I have a battery grip arriving for one of them to try with a new lens, the Sigma 28-105 f2.8. I’m not 100% sure whether I will use this lens next year on one of these bodies or on the S5ii replacing the 70-200 f4 which is broken (dropped it and knocked out the OIS so it doesn’t work in any capacity anymore and need something longer than the 28-70 it’s currently stuck with). Otherwise it’s: S5ii for longer static stuff. It just works and does not have hissy fit meltdowns when it gets a bit hot and as we have had multiple heatwaves this Summer… S9 for shorter static stuff that requires a quicker set up. Capable of some pretty long takes as long as it’s not too hot. It did about 30 minutes though on sticks in direct sunlight, 35 Celcius the other day so hats off to it. Unlike the L10 that had a meltdown after less than 10 minutes…but is proving to be great as a dedicated gimbal camera and outside of work, is a great EDC/travel camera. So 4 jobs left this year with 4 slightly different set ups coming, but feel this set up is now very mature. I still look at some of the Sony lenses with envy, but I can’t see any system change at this time being anything but a sideways move, ie, maybe gain in one area but would lose in another and as above, this set up just works for my needs so anything I do now is more tweaking for the sake of tweaking than any actual need.

  9. For anyone considering the R6V, Looks like this fairly new 'Subject Tracking IS' feature addresses the longstanding wobble issues Canon has had with its IBIS system. I think more testing needs to be done - but just caught this vid from YouTuber Q Maldonado talking about it via this Canon R6V FB group. Personally, I sold my R50V and picked an R6V up to be my new casual/travel/C-cam. If you barebones it with a wrist strap it isn't that much bigger than an R50V with a Smallrig cage. Haven't really had time to do much testing but so far the biggest issue for me has been using the LCD screen in broad daylight. My workaround will be to rebuy a Zacuto Z-Finder and slap a Z-Frame adhesive on the LCD screen. Sure it makes it impossible to put the LCD in the protective closed position but that is obvi not a new concern + if you slap on a screen protector below the adhesive you should be fine + because the Z-Frame adhesive has some thickness to it, it also acts as another layer of protection. Anyways, just an fyi!
  10. MotionCam Pro is apparently coming to iOS. I think they already offer private beta via TestFlight.
  11. Second Charmera arrived, and I got the other naturally coloured one, so that's a win! I got the second one so that I don't feel like I need to be careful with the first one, so it's the sort of redundancy that will let me push for getting shots even if it's raining or I'm in a crowd or whatever. I found a second microSD card for it, but it had issues, and it turns out that if you format the card in the camera it stops being functional - either for the camera or for reading it on a computer! This ended up being a win though, because I discovered that if I format the SD card to the oldest format FAT32 IIRC then it works better than the previous format (ExFAT) which had random stutters in the footage. So after some confusion and a bit of trial and error that's a big win! It still duplicates every third frame though, so it didn't change that behaviour.
  12. My attempts of modding a phone. I also went for the D mount on another phone with a smaller sensor.

  14. Happy Thursday Everyone, I've just created and uploaded a new track to share with the community: "BUILDING THINGS IN FARAWAY PLACES" You can freely download it here: https://soundimage.org/puzzle-music-8/ As always, it's 100% free to use in your projects with attribution...just like my thousands of other music tracks and sounds. THE MUSIC PACK THAT GROWS WITH YOU More people downloaded my Game Music Mega Pack this week...I'm so glad it's helpful! Personally, I think the coolest thing about it is that users get email alerts each week as I add new tracks to the pack so they can download those tracks as well. In this way, you'll always have my full library as it grows. Here's a link: https://soundimage.org/ogg-game-music-mega-pack/ Lastly, some of my tracks live on the Open Game Art website and can be downloaded from it. If you happen to use the site, all of the looping versions of my tracks are now available to download in higher-quality Ogg format, just like on my website. Enjoy! 🙂
  15. Do a ‘spec’ job for a non-profit that has board members with deep pockets and active businesses. Do something simple and over deliver. Make a great first impression. It’s just networking and word of mouth.
  16. Hi guys, So I finally quit my job and decided to start my own video agency. After 10+ years of experience in video (allthough the last 6 years or so after having children the pacing was lower then before but I’m taking the leap and going all in. There’s just one small problem: I currently have 0 clients. I’ve got the experience, the gear, a maybe dated portfolio and I know how to produce videos from start to finish. But now I need to turn that into an actual business, and preferably make it work pretty quickly. So I’m curious: What actually works in 2026 to get your first clients? Cold outreach? Networking? LinkedIn? Instagram? Agencies? Referrals? Something completely different? I’d especially love to hear from people who recently started a creative business or agency and managed to get clients without already having a massive network. Thanks a lot!

    Sony FX5

A short from Filippo Chiesa Thanks to Sony Italy, I had the opportunity to put the new FX5 through its paces on a real project I’m currently working on. I shot everything in X-OCN LT 5K open gate, using spherical lenses. The FX5’s sensor is truly wonderful, and I believe its performance sets a new benchmark for cameras of this type—and beyond.
  19. Hey guys, excellent thread so far. Saw this a few months back and decided to check the used market. Damn, cratered hard over the last few years. Given this, I was finally able to pick myself up an Isco Ultrastar f=80mm (without taking out a second mortgage) after pining for the results Media Division showed off in that their Scope series all those years ago. I've worked primarily with Takumar prime lenses, in combo with the Blazar Nero adapter - However, as I'm trying to build out a run and gun setup I'm curious to see if anyone has any recommendations for zoom taking lenses? I shoot pretty much exclusively on s35 sensors, so we can probably go pretty wide. Let me know!
  20. I’m waiting for Google Play Store verification — they require an ID check before I can publish the demo version for beta testers.
  21. DIGILOG doesn't record a true raw unprocessed look to H.265. Motioncam Pro I have enjoyed a lot but it is Android not iOS.
  22. Yeah, a big screen is nicer. No doubt about it. It just wouldn't be, for me, the main selling point of one camera vs another. That said, you are already in L mount and I've heard that the recently-released autofocus on the BMCC is quite good...

    Nikon Zr is coming

I dream of having a tool of this magnitude. Being serious, as someone who really does not want to rig out his cameras as after all, I am a hybrid shooter, the larger, clearer and brighter the rear LCD is, the better because I shoot exclusively with the things. It’s also why I prefer a tilt over a flip out. Fully articulated works better for me for the stills side, but tilt for video. Hopefully all cameras in the future will increasingly work on having these physical features which probably benefit more folks than massive pixel counts or bloated codecs. Less grading is financial boon to the small business as time saved is time that can be put to use elsewhere, or increase profitability. That is what draws me to the Red codec, but as things stand, that storage costs defeats any savings for me, but the grading time is a draw…
  24. Quick update: I tested the Motorola Edge 50 Pro hardware encoders and could not find a working HEVC 4K60p path for the full RAW-derived frame size. c2.qti.hevc.encoder accepts configurations like 2160×2880 @ 60 fps and 2880×2160 @ 60 fps, but fails after the first frame with UNKNOWN_ERROR. Rotation does not help. The same size works at 30 fps, and 1080p60 works, so this looks like a real Qualcomm encoder limit/driver issue, not an AAC or RAW/DNG problem. So the current plan is: RAW/RAWC master: full resolution, 60 fps H.265 quality proxy: full resolution, 30 fps H.265/H.264 smooth proxy: lower resolution, 60 fps if supported PC export: final 4K60p from RAW/RAWC/DNG A more interesting idea is to use the extra RAW60 frames for HDR30: alternating short/long exposures, then merging pairs of frames into a 30 fps HDR output.

    Nikon Zr is coming

Having detachable EVF as good as Z6iii has would be even better than having only the ZR display. Still the 4” display is joy to use, and regular 3” or 3.2” LCD’s feel quite tiny after using ZR. The main problem is still the lack of saving trimmed R3D NE files as R3D NE. If you shoot from sticks and put the camera far away you end up getting a lot of unwanted data you can’t get rid of. Unless you save the R3D NE trims to H.265. Shame on Nikon and RED as NRaw works fine. Luckily you can use Parallax monitor app to control the ZR, Z6iii, Z8 and it has pretty good exposure tools too, false color, red traffic lights, scopes, zebras, and even focus peaking with LUT, frame guides, desqueeze, just to name a few of the features. ZR could be so much better if saving R3D NE trim was fixed. The file size itself is not that big of an issue itself. After shooting almost two hundred days with ZR the R3D NE looks a bit better and needs less grading than NRaw, especially in low light.
  26. I understand that the grip of the Z6 III holds the battery. Judging by pictures, it also holds the memory cards - which includes a UHS-2 full-size SD card instead of a UHS-1 micro-SD card like the ZR has. Oh, and you can also change the cards while the camera is on a tripod or gimbal. I had no idea that mirrorless cameras couldn't be used without a gimbal. That's quite a limitation. Without being aware of it, I've been using mine mostly without a gimbal for a while now. You know the microphone is supposed to point toward the front of the camera and not the back, right? That should reduce the risk of poking out your eye with it when holding up the EVF. 😉 Anyway, the Z6 III has a screen that is still pretty decent-sized at 3.2". From your description, it sounds like your needs could be better met by using a Black Magic Cinema Camera 6K instead of a Nikon ZR. The BMCC has a bigger rear screen at 5". The EVF is optional so you won't need to use it if you don't want to. While L mount isn't quite as versatile as Z mount, it's still quite good. The BMCC6K also has 2 mini-XLR mic inputs which can be used along with the internal mics for 4-channel audio. If you want smaller files, you can increase the compression ratio for BM raw. Even at the maximum compression on the UC12K (12:1, I think?), it still looks very good. I usually use the Ursa at 8:1 except for VFX shots where I go up to 5:1. The main limitation against the ZR is that the BMCC is a bit bigger and heavier. But as a person who wants "the best back LCD I can have," the BMCC blows the ZR and its puny 4" screen out of the water. You'll also get a full-size HDMI port and not a garbage micro-HDMI port in case you want to connect to an even bigger 7" screen.
  27. The difference might seem small in specs but it's a 25% increase in area and 50% increase in display pixels. If making the display still larger, the camera would need to increase in size, and the balancing of the current size on a gimbal is easier than a taller camera such as the Z8 or Z9. Rigs get bigger, gimbals get bigger, total weight of the working setup goes up. I think it's a very good compromise in this aspect.
