Sony A7S III wish list – eND, 8K, 4K/120fps, ProRes, RAW, revolutionary design, Venice colour and even new menus

Does Sony plan to be stone dead last for video specs much longer? Yes, stone dead last. The Canon EOS R5, Nikon Z6, Panasonic S1H, Fuji X-T3, Leica SL2 and of course Fuji GFX 100 all ace the ageing Sony A7S II and flagship A7R IV for video features and image quality. The only companies that don’t are struggling Olympus and stills-orientated Pentax.

Legend has it there is a camera called the A7S III. They say it’s going to “exceed expectations” and put Sony back on top for video. But will it? It’s 2020 and hell has frozen over. A certain Canon EOS R5 has cutting edge video specs nobody saw coming. This means only one thing – the A7S III has no choice but to be very special indeed and may even have to go back to the drawing board.

Sony A7S III Sensor Specs Leak – 4K/60p and Quad Bayer 15 megapixel (with possible 61MP mode)

The sensor for the A7S III has leaked on the EOSHD Forum, with 4K/60p and an HDR mode in 4K and at 15 megapixels thanks to a Quad Bayer pattern. If you care to take a look at the specs here – you’ll notice a few interesting things. There is only a small megapixel boost from the old 12 megapixel sensor (which rules out 8K) but a completely different architecture with 60 million photosites in a Quad Bayer arrangement, so in this respect the sensor represents a big step up in resolution and colour capture data from a standard bayer sensor.

Will the Sony A7S III have a 48 / 12 megapixel Quad Bayer Exmor RS sensor?

I am convinced Sony will go in the direction of Quad Bayer stacked CMOS sensors for the A7S series and it’s a major reason we’ve waited so long for it. I also think the FS5’s electronically variable ND filter will be in the camera too.

Quad Bayer answers the conundrum of balancing low light performance and megapixel count. It is the best of both worlds and allows a 48 megapixel 8000 x 6000 image and 8K video – at the same time as 4000 x 3000 and 4K video with better low light performance.

The proof of concept is sitting in my hands right now. Step forward the mighty Xiaomi Mi 9 smartphone with 48 megapixel Sony Quad Bayer sensor and 960fps slow-mo.
