Canon 5D Mark III raw video crop mode performance

5dguide1

Crop mode is covered in my 106 page EOSHD 5D Mark III Raw Shooter’s Guide on 5D Mark III raw video here

Above – EOSHD “raw rig” above is comprised of the Lanparte BMCC cage with 5D Mark III and LanParte follow focus / carbon matte box from HDVideoShop

Slashcam and I set out to test the 5D Mark III’s crop mode as precisely as possible using a chart – it is possible thanks to 100% accurate framing in crop mode with the black & white Magic Lantern live-view preview mode. Further optimisations to the buffer handling by Alex at Magic Lantern aims to make higher resolutions such as 2560 x 960 at 98MB/s sustainable for longer or even continuous.

5D Mark III vs GH2 vs NEX 7

Get the 1080p frame grabs here

There’s a large difference in the image from these 3 cameras. See how they compare in this test video.

Later in the video there is also a test of the Contax Zeiss 300mm F4 in Ex-Tele crop mode (1:1 1080p from the centre of the sensor) on the GH2. In this mode you can see into people’s windows from 2 miles away sat on a hillside. It is insane!!

$3000 Nikon D800 thrashes flagship $6000 Nikon D4 for video

Nikon D800

Freelance BBC shooter Johnnie Behiri has had his hands all over the new Nikon DSLRs recently and has been keeping me informed about their pros and cons. The big news here is just how good the Nikon D800’s video with cutting edge Sony sensor is relative to its big brother the D4.

Pentax 6mm F1.2 – the perfect lens for GH2 crop mode

For full samples by Seb Farges taken on the GH2 click here

The Pentax 6mm F1.2 c-mount lens is the cheapest fast wide lens for DSLR filmmaking currently available. To use it you will need to have a Panasonic GH2, and to enable 1080p Ex-Tele mode (commonly known as 1:1 crop mode). It gives a feel similar to 8mm or 16mm film on the GH2.

Panasonic GH2 1:1 crop mode changes everything again

UPDATE 2: This will give you a visual idea of the extent of the crop – [url]http://www.twitvid.com/GHWFB

UPDATE 1: Vimeo does not display AVCHD .mts files in full resolution, reducing it to a very compressed 720p format. If you are a plus user, download the original file at Vimeo here (right click this link, save as). The image above is not representative of the resolution that is being delivered by the GH2’s crop mode. That is an actually 1:1 crop to 820px wide of a frame from the AVCHD but it is heavily compressed by my site’s content management system. So watching the AVCHD video file is HIGHLY recommended.

I am seriously excited about this feature. Here are the bare facts sans sugar:

• True 1080p resolution for first time on a DSLR
• No moire
• No aliasing
• No scaling
• No binning
• No line skipping

With that, we introduce the GH2’s secret weapon – 1:1 crop mode…
