Sony F3 has 4 times light gathering ability of 5D Mark II

The Sony F3 will have a dedicated Super 35 video sensor with huge pixels – can DSLRs compete?

With news from Sony that the F3 has a built anew Exmor Super 35 2k sensor unrelated to DSLRs comes an interesting dilemma for DSLR users. I’ve been doing some research into the pixel sizes (and light gathering ability) of the leading video DSLRs.

Century Optics anamorphic viewfinder hood for DSLRs

Buy on eBay from London based Cinematographer, big version (ex-BBC stock)

A few months back I said to Steve Weiss in an email, come up with an anamorphic version of the Z-Finder so we could have a true 2.35:1 screen in our eye while shooting.

Well it turns out there is already such a product and it was made by Century for the BBC. Zacuto and others are not yet in on the act but if anamorphic shooting really takes off in the next few years they may want to look at coming up with a similar thing.

Where is the 35mm full frame 2 megapixel DSLR?

Canon have a trick up their sleeve, but so far we have no sign of it coming out. If released, this video DSLR would have 6x the low light performance of even the Nikon D3S and twice as much resolution as the 5D Mark II in video mode. Read on to find out how this is possible…

The first generation of full HD capable DSLRs – Canon 5D Mark II, 7D, 550D, Panasonic GH1 all feature large sensors designed for high resolution stills.

Lots of rumours are hitting the net ahead of the expected ‘2 waves’ of announcements from Canon next month and in August. One of the cameras constantly mooted is a 60D.

But I see a problem with this and something profound has been missed.

Watch the Robert Rodriguez EOS 7D music video

Back a few months ago Sin City director and Predators producer Robert Rodriguez was spotted with a Zacuto rig and 2 7Ds on location at Zillker Park in Austin, Texas.

It’s a pleasure to now be able to see it. The music video has premiered on IFC.com (the Independent Film Channel) complete with an interview with the man himself.

The death of full frame in video land?

As the Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D3S show, full frame may be winning now – but do we really need it?

Rise of the compact High Sensitivity sensors

Recently I was comparing sample photos from the Canon G11 to the Panasonic GF1, I found that at ISO 3200 the G11 was almost matching the GF1 for resolution, detail, colour and noise simply through virtue of having a very sensitive imager and very intelligent noise control… from a sensor the size of a baby’s pinky finger.

Back in video land I rested easy… but then yesterday came episode 2 of the Great Zacuto Shootout (spoilers ahead)
