Canon reveal 4K movie camera at NY Expo

Canon have revealed a prototype / concept camera which shoots 4K video at 60p on a 2/3″ sensor.

One of the first to spot the new camera was Philip Bloom who has been invited to a VIP opening day at Canon Expo 2010 in New York.

Surely they have developed a RAW codec for that? I think we could see the codec announced with the 1DS Mark IV in the next few days, whilst there are also the rumoured PL mount lenses and a slim possibility of an earlier than expected 5D Mark III appearance.

Canon also revealed a new ‘high band’ DSLR with a 50 Megapixel CMOS sensor.

Along with Canon’s other engineering strides on display at the Expo such as the ultra-large-scale CMOS sensor, their technology has now moved ahead of the human eye in terms of resolving detail in low light and resolving colour.

The lens attached to the 4K movie camera is an F1.8-3.8 L lens (7-140mm) which equates to approx. 24-480mm in 35mm terms. The camera also features a 4K resolution LCD monitor.

The camera is similar in terms of specification to RED’s 2/3″ Scarlet. I’d prefer to see a bigger sensor but it shows that Canon are taking the whole digital cinema thing seriously, and planning for the future.

    Story is developing… stay tuned.
