I wish the story was as compelling as the visuals.
  2. The usefulness of resolution depends how close you will sit to any given screen. A BMPCC with a better body definitely would have been nice to have.
  3. The S1H and S1 seem to have more noise reduction going on in the 6K 420 H265 modes, looks less organic. I don't understand. On the S1 you can't oversample when shooting in S35 as there is only 4k to work with. You need additional resolution to oversample. Same situation with the C70, if its using a 2k crop in S16 mode there is nothing to oversample from. It could oversample 4k to 2k if it was 2k S35. It should have the same issue unless there is something that is really flying over my head.
  4. There is no lineskipping or bixel binning on the S1. It is a full frame 6k sensor. The S35 mode simply uses the 4k portion of the sensor which works out to S35. There isn't more noise, the noise is just bigger. If you have an image with noise present and you crop in post, the noise will be more apparent as it will be larger. There isn't more noise, it's just larger. It's like looking at an image from far away or on a small screen it might be unnoticeable. But if you blow the image up you start to see everything better. Hopefully that makes sense. Same with the Alexa LF vs S35. The LF appears to have less noise but in reality its just smaller, both cameras generate the same amount of noise at any given exposure. It's why Roger Deacons was comfortable shooting the LF at 1600 iso where as he wasn't on previous cameras.
  5. Yeah the A7S3 is nice but nothing crazy. Its definitely not 13 stops if the Alexa has 14. I really think it depends on the scene. I can get a really nice shot on my iphone if the dynamic range of the scene is small. There are definitely times where my Alexa and any other given camera are hard to tell apart, but when you get super strong highlights it's game over. Even something like the BMPCC with lower dynamic range just looks better in high dynamic range scenes as the texture is so much better. Pulling shadows out of compressed H264 never looks great. RAW just looks better usually. My S1 has better dynamic range than the old RED Scarlet. But the Scarlet's shadows just look better. Over all the current full frame cameras are pretty crazy good for most people's needs.
  6. It definitely will IMO. Full frame vs S35 on say the Panasonic S1 is dramatically different if you are struggling for light. You are essentially blowing up the noise. If you expose correctly its no issue of course.
  7. Yeah when it comes to making money whatever is quickest easiest option is probably best. 99.9% of people won't pay more for Log footage or even know what it is to begin with. A majority of situations won't even require the extra dynamic range you get with log. Auto focus is cool but if you are used to Panasonic shooting it can be confusing and you'll probably actually miss shots at first.
  8. Yeah I never had an issue with Fuji files but I did find when cropping in at insane amounts the Panasonic seemed to hold more detail. I really never crop in on photos much so its not really a problem.
  9. The GH5 did not have an OLPF and had zero Moire. I think you might be surprised by the S1. The tilting screen on it is awesome and the weight increase is marginal IMO. I think for the GH6 its partly a question if the dual gain sensor applies to stills. One of the downsides of an M43 camera in general is the lack of dynamic range and color depth. That might solve it. I noticed a difference in detail when it comes to Fuji vs Panasonic but I think its the weird X-trans filter thing more than sensor size. I have found there is so much detail in the 24mp S1 Raw files that I can't imagine ever needing more than that for any application. I have cropped in on an eye from a portrait shot and found there to be enough detail for the image to be usable. The most I'd ever crop in for something is like 50% and its got that covered easily.
  10. I agree though if you are happy with the S5 image but want a high quality tilting LCD, the S1 is kind of the answer. I do wish it had an OLPF, though I haven't run into moire yet.
  11. How about the S1? S1H with tilt screen and slightly smaller body.
  12. I believe I got a Fuji XT3 after getting rid of my GH5. Definitely a step up in terms of color and dynamic range. Having 4k 60p in 10 bit and a nice HD 120p was cool. I still think the XT3 is an amazing price at $900 used right now. Its an awesome stills camera to boot. Only downside is the 30 minute record limit. I think I got an S1 after that and ended up getting rid of the Fuji. I like Fuji color more but the S1 image is a step up in every other way and color with full VLOG is fine. Its hard to argue the image on the S1. It's up there with the RED komodo if you are shooting RAW.

The cinematography and visuals were absolutely astounding. I enjoyed the production design and casting as well. The story, pacing and editing left some to be desired though. I was getting sleepy in the third act both times I watched it at the cinema.

@kye They all look nice, taken at different dates though. The GH6 looks quite natural. @Django Yeah I think the Komodo is the most compelling option right now. I'd be all over it if it wasn't made by RED.

It seems to retain color much better underexposed than the GH5, GH5S or Pocket 4k. I don't mind noise that much, ARRI gets noisy underexposed but the color doesn't look wack.

I don't know I am often needing dynamic range indoors when dealing with windows and often shoot at 4000 iso on my S1 indoors. Dynamic range in lower light situations is helpful, especially in the shadows which is where the DGO sensors seem to shine. Yeah it would be nice if the GH6 had more dynamic range but its honestly very respectable and maintaining color accuracy throughout the dynamic range is more important than the dynamic range itself. The S1H released with terrible NR baked in but it was later fixed. The S1 released without that issue and looks incredibly organic. The GH5 had the same NR issue upon release but was later fixed. The GH5 always did have a sharpened look, but the S1/S1H doesn't have that. BRAW has sort of a softer look, not sure why but its some sort of processing going on. If you shoot CDNG on BM cameras you'll see the difference in texture. It's a pretty subtle thing, probably doesn't really matter. Would be more apparent on the big screen like anything else.

They have similar highlight latitude but when underexposed the P4K doesn't do as well, especially with color. Now the P6K is pretty excellent in that regard, however I have heard issues of fixed noise patterns when the sensor gets hot. The P6K also has no so great rolling shutter. Panasonic has also been known to have a less processed image with more texture.
  18. Sony color may have been accurate under proper single source lighting in a studio but the real test is under poor lighting conditions. That is where Canon, RED and ARRI are doing their things.

Imma buy this as soon as I can lol. If it had internal prores RAW that would be icing on the cake, but we can thank RED for that not happening. Even with the M1 chip mac H264 and H265 still suck for editing. Its a huge hassle to transcode to Prores. It makes me not want to shoot on the S1. External recorders are annoying as well. There is a question of why not just get a Pocket 4k but I think the GH6 has many advantages including an inherently better DGO sensor. Of course you don't get BRAW, but I really don't need RAW. I am also a loyal Panasonic guy.

ISO 12,800 gives you the opportunity to shoot at higher f-stops in lowlight, which was traditionally impossible without a lot of artificial light. But anyways the GH6 looks like a solid low light performer and just a good all around performer.

6 stops under is dramatic but this issue shows up at 2 stops under. I have noticed in RAW its not there, even at 6 stops under its not there.
  22. Yeah I usually never use Neat Video or things of that nature. Its not bad by any means but I have definitely noticed it not holding up as much as regular 24p when underexposed.
  23. The dynamic range in the highlights on the S1H/S1/S5 is better however it quickly falls apart in the shadows. They all display vertical banding when underexposed. This is something overlooked in dynamic range tests. I also think the 4k 60p on the GH6 looks a lot better than the cropped 4k 60p on the S1 series. I see what you mean the the S5 is pretty damn good and is full frame, so the want to switch won't be for everyone.

From CVP's over under testing the GH6 clearly does better then the GH5 and GH5S. The S1 and S1H also quickly get really bad horizontal banding when underexposed. To me those dynamic range numbers are kind of meaningless.

CineD botched the dynamic range testing on the GH6. They measured the GH6 in non boost mode at 800 iso when the native is 250 iso. The GH6 even in non boost DR mode has more dynamic range than both the GH5S and the GH5. Cined really needs to get their act together. They are currently claiming the dynamic range in non boost mode is the worst of any modern M43 camera. Kind of a turn off for people who want to use 4k 120p. WTF The GH6 looks better then the competition in the shadows. The S1 takes the cake for highlights. I love highlight retention I just like having an even balance of highlight to shadow detail. Also when talking highlight detail the RED Komodo, which is seeing a ton of use on all levels of production, actually only has a little over 4 stops. So the GH6 isn't doing bad at all.
