I agree. I would add that "constant quality" (variable bitrate) works best for me.
Here’s what has surprised me over the past two years with mirrorless video:
I shoot 4K 60p in-camera at 200Mbps H265 10bit.  When I re-compress this to H265 10bit In Handbrake (at many times slower than real time) at the RF 19 setting with “constant quality”, I get near identical image quality at only 10Mbps to 60Mbps depending on the subject matter.
The scenes at higher bit rates (50-60Mbps) are outdoor shots with a lot of complicated textures from trees, grass, etc. But indoors shots with solid color walls and less busy backgrounds can come out as low as 10-20Mbps.
I compared test files like this:
Open the test movies in Quicktime player windows.
In one of them go to the menu “Window / merge all windows”.
This puts them all in one window with tabs along the top for each video.
Find the same frame In all the movies, and set all at the same magnification.
Do an instant back & forth comparison by clicking on the tabs.
Comparisons at high magnification shows a tiny bit of softening in the Handbrake image compared
to the original, not visible at normal magnification, at a fraction of the of the original camera bitrate.
It seems to me that the speed of compression processing affects the IQ as much as the bitrate.
In other words, letting Handbrake run a compression slowly at 5 frames a second (resulting in a 20Mbps variable bitrate “constant quality” file) can give the same IQ as the original camera file did in real time at 60 frames per second (at 200Mbps “constant bitrate”.)
More time/frame makes sense when you look at what happens in the algorithm settings Handbrake uses for compression as you change the slider under encoder options from fast to slow.
For example, h264 10bit, slider at “medium” shows the following settings:
    x264 Unparse: level=4.0:vbv-bufsize=75000:vbv-maxrate=60000
compared to slider at “very slow”:
    x264 Unparse: level=4.0:ref=5:bframes=8:b-adapt=2:direct=auto:analyse=all:me=umh:merange=24:subme=10:trellis=2:vbv-bufsize=75000:vbv-maxrate=60000:rc-lookahead=60
Going from 200Mbps to 20 or 30Mbps for comparable IQ was a surprise.
This is probably common knowledge for Handbrake users, but I haven’t seen it discussed (or I missed it).
Happily this means I can archive an excellent master at a fraction of the original 200Mbps.
And fit everything on a flash drive for the TV’s USB slot.
To get back on topic, I usually go at least five years between cameras, which means I might still have
three more to go with the X-T3. I have oversampled 4K60 DCI 10bit, Fuji fixed the auto ISO stepping, I got the lenses and accessories I need so I’m fixed indefinitely.
Now if Sony 4K projectors would come down in price…

There's two ways to look at bitrate.
The first is constant bitrate per pixel, which is how Prores works, for example, so that 4X the pixels should be 4X the bitrate in order to maintain the same quality of each pixel.
The second is constant bitrate for the overall image.  When they released 4K TVs they weren't twice as wide and twice as tall as 1080p TVs.  On top of this, my experiments have revealed that a lower resolution looks worse than a higher resolution at an identical bitrate, so there's an argument to be made that keeping the same bitrate is actually not required.
Another factor is that image quality goes up with improvements in codec, so h264 isn't as good as h265 (by a factor of about 2), and h266 is about 2 times as efficient as h265.
Yet another factor is that displays are getting larger over time, and video quality expectations are also increasing over time.
I take all of this and go somewhere in the middle, where I expect a higher bitrate for a higher resolution, but I don't expect to maintain the same bitrate per pixel.  I also try to be pragmatic and don't get fussed as long as the bitrate is 'enough'.  Obviously that differs between applications and situations, so that's up to everyone to determine for themselves.

That's 80Mbps, which is nothing.  At 80Mbps the extra detail in 8K footage from 4K or even 2K would probably be more than half just noise and compression artefacts.  Potatojet did some good videos comparing 8K smartphone video with normal resolution video and the 8K image out of these things would still look like complete sh*t even if it was downscaled to 2K.  Watch the YT at 1080 or 720p and you can still tell the difference.
TLDR; don't bother.  It's like a 65MP jpeg image compressed to 24Kb, lots of pixels but they're all crap.
I did some tests yesterday on the GH5 modes and got pleasant surprise.  Obviously one of the great features of the GH5 is that the image is downsampled from the 5.2K sensor, but I confirmed that the 2X digital crop is also downsampled, the 1080p 60p mode is nicely downsampled, and the 1080p 60p 2X digital crop mode is also downsampled!  No Canon Cripple Hammer going on there!
Also, the better I get at grading the more that I find that the limitation of the camera is me, and so when people criticise, they're just criticising their own limitations and trying to buy their way out.  This was a quick test shot for highlight rolloff - graded in under 2 minutes so not perfect, but every time I look at the footage I forget about newer cameras..

It's precisely what the Tories have created. Their so-called best and brightest Eton boys club with Gove, Cummings, Raab, etc.
For me it has to be an informed democracy.
And by the way, why throw musicians under the bus?

    They are owed an explanation.
Behind closed doors all sorts of things have been decided on our behalf. The devil is in the detail. It's not democratic. How many times was it mentioned in the lead up to the referendum that things like these would be part of the rules afterwards. The time to vote in an informed way would be round about now.
You have to have an informed democracy, people have to know what they are voting for or against. Simple as that really mate!

Chxfgb reacted to Video Hummus in Is H.265 being replaced by AV1 or VP9 on Windows and new TV models?
Simple answer: too early to tell. AV1 has a long way to go before it is well supported. A good sign is that both major graphic card companies have AV1 support in new or upcoming products. AV1 will require hardware acceleration for it to be useable for anything, especially encoding. Another key player is Apple, which I'm sure would like to not pay licensing fees for its multi-billion dollar iphone devices. I expect they will be the first to promote and push AV1 in their Apple Silicon line of products (if it isn't already built-in?). YouTube (ie google) is a key developer as well but they won't move on it until there is widespread hardware acceleration for it. They, perhaps more than any company, will benefit from AV1's increased quality at very low bitrates. Amazon (twitch) as well. At higher bitrates AV1 is similar to HEVC in regards to its efficiency.
With all of that said. I would postulate that AV1 will be pushed heavily because of its royalty free nature. All the companies developing it are out to rid themselves of the patent licensing pool nightmare that is HEVC and MPEG-Part 2.
It also seems most of the major camera companies refuse to license ProPres or BRAW or any other edit friendly codec for video capture, except in their higher-end cinema product lines. So we will probably be stuck capturing in compressed delivery codecs for awhile. Which, with proper hardware acceleration, doesn't bother me too much. Saves on my storage requirements and with 8K and beyond it will require some kind of compressed codec to be practical. If only we could have compressed RAW!

Is there No Limit to our suffering.
Locked in a race as to who can kill the arts first, we bear witness to a gargantuan dick swinging contest fought between haphazard bureaucrats in government and a deadly bat pathogen. The fight is escalating with no end in sight, but one thing is for sure – corporate America will profit endlessly.

I was also waiting for the Viltrox trio on Fuji, but the first two get mixed reviews and all seem to suffer from CA, which is annoying for video and JPG shooting for me. Realised that the Fuji 27mm and 50mm are much better (and lighter) and f1.4 isn't essential.
Currently travelling, so want to stay lightweight. May just get an L39 mount Canon 50mm f1.4 or f1.5 or Jupiter 50mm f1.5.
The improved lens on the Fuji X100V and 4K video and other new features makes it very very tempting. Not sure about the overheating issue though.

@Chxfgb I think the 'secret to life' these days is not to read the comments section. Anywhere. Ever.
I sometimes look at places such as DP Review for kit reviews and news etc, but avoid the comments section like it starts with a C and has a 19 in it.

Chxfgb reacted to heart0less in A tiny 25/1.8 CCTV lens vs speedboosted Nikkor 35/1.8.
    Hiya!
Another extensive post coming from me - brace yourselves!
Long story short: I tried to minimize my 35mm eqv. setup and see what potential drawbacks would this bring.

Left side: newly acquired Newyi 25/1.8 CCTV C-mount lens bought for astonishing 23$.
Right side: Zhongyi Lens Turbo II + Nikkor 35/1.8 G (officialy it's a DX lens [meant for Nikon APS-C cameras], but it happens to cover FF quite nicely).

    Goliath vs David:

Operation-wise, it's difficult to pick a clear winner.
Newyi, being a CCTV lens, is so tiny that it's rather tricky to wield, even with my  small fingers. Aperture ring is stepless and smooth, whereas focus ring is a bit stiff near infinity.
Can't say a bad word about focus throw or focus zones overlaying one another - those are all good and allow to precisely nail the focus.
Nikkor, on the other hand, isn't the most intuitive lens and is rather quirky to operate manually. There are no focus marks and the focus ring has little steps that can be felt while fine tuning.
There is no aperture ring and the only way I can affect the aperture is via an AI - EOS adapter with built-in aperture lever.
Having said that, Nikkor simply feels better in my hands. It may be bigger, heavier and not meant for manual use, but it is what it is.

Newyi is advertised as a f/1.8 lens, yet it doesn't gather as much light as it really should.
The same scene, shot in the same conditions, required a shutter speed of 1/60 when I used Newyi wide open, compared to a shutter speed of 1/105 when I used Nikkor (via dumb adapter, not a speedbooster).
Speedboosted Nikkor gave me a reading of 1/160.

That's a 2/3 EV of difference, which makes Newyi rather a T/2.2 (if not less) lens, not a T/1.8 one.
Speedboosted Nikkor is almost a T/1.4 beast.

Field of view between those two is almost identical.
Nikkor has some serious barrel distortion, but it's due to it being a DX lens.

    Sharpness and contrast:
Wide open Newyi is not only tack sharp in the center, beating the Nikkor easily, but also free of any noticeable aberrations/fringing.
Unfortunately, it's less contrasty and introduces some ugly beige/red tint to the shadows.
    Some 100% crops.

Those are my thoughts after owning the Newyi for 3 hours.
I really wanted it to replace its bigger competitor, but to me contrast, color rendering and ability to gather more light is more important than sharpness and portability.

Nonetheless, the fairy tale has a happy ending and Newyi managed to find a new host - Sony NEX-5.
I hope my sister enjoys it, lol.

Here is a photo taken with it on a NEX-5:

    And a 100% crop:

I'm a long standing member and actually it's a very friendly place and no silly tiffs that ever get out of hand.
Disagreements at times yes, but it's very well moderated.
It is not an especially 'technical' place other than for Fuji and yes it does have a dedicated video section but that is basically even more dead than the dodo.
In short, it's more a fun, Fuji user hang out than anything. Which is fine.
The complete opposite of Fuji Rumors however where the comments section is utterly toxic combined with a lot of general muppetry. Anyone with anything useful to say is shouted down by the trolls in their mothers basement, very quickly.
DP Review is bad enough at times and I try and stay away from all the negative places as what's the point?
