In Arri's case they offer (1) Alexa 35 with all features included in the purchase price, (2) Alexa 35 base model with the most commonly used features enabled, and (2a) subscription to optional features that you may need for a specific project, (2b) permanent licensing of those features that you want to keep, so the subscription is just one option and permanent licenses to those features are available if you want them.

I don't understand what the issue is. Having more options in how the payment is made is good and means more people/companies will be able to afford the stuff. No one is complaining that leasing or renting cars (or getting a taxi ride) are available in addition to the option of purchasing and owning a car. Public transport tickets are available on a single trip, load value, or pay for use for a period of time basis. Again no one is complaining about the existence of these options. Why then is subscription software or firmware as an option a problem?

I think people are complaing about these things because they don't understand that software development costs money and if you want to continue developing a particular piece software in the future you probably need to keep those same people who developed it continuously employed so that you can do it efficiently in the future. If you have to let the people who developed something go, to add features, the cost is multiplied because no one new initially understands the existing code. The subscription model works best for software because it enables continued employment so the knowledge of how the software works internally is not lost.

Today since operating systems are continuously changed, the applications software also needs frequent maintenance. So for Adobe the subscription model works best. They are able to maintain broad hardware support and have a huge library of cameras and lenses that are supported in terms of raw processing and lens corrections. The subscription cost is really low for the (still) photography software kit (LR + PS) and while the other stuff is kind of expensive, it was always expensive even in the then-thought-permanent license era. And as there are free or inexpensive options available for the tasks which Adobe prices expensively (Davinci Resolve instead of Premiere Pro), there is something for everyone available in the market.

What would be much worse is that people rely on a particular product and have a lot of material made with it and suddenly those files could not be opened or edited as a result of the company making the software ending their operations or support of the product.

I only made it about 5 minutes through the video before I got bored with it so maybe he addresses some of this after that.
But I'm not sure why it's news that Arri give people an option to buy the full camera or a base model that disables some features until they're enabled.  That's been a thing for a long time.  When one buys the base model, there are options to pay to  enable those features on a temporary or permanent basis.  It's one of the reasons that when you see used Arris for sale, they'll frequently say things like "includes high-speed license" or "includes raw license."
Speaking for myself, I kind of hate subscriptions in general for this kind of thing, but that is very much mitigated by having the option for a permanent license.  I still don't like it a lot since (in most cases), it's not really reducing the camera price.  In the case of things like the GH4/5, it's not like Panasonic would have needed to charge more for the camera if they just threw in vlog-l.
In Arri's case, I suspect that the decision was pushed by big rental houses - if I'm a rental house, a reduced cost base model lets me buy more cameras.  Add a license to enable certain features and I can just tack that onto the price of the rental.  Renting for a week?  X dollars.  You want raw on that rental?  Add Y dollars.  Camera reaches end of service life, the buyer can turn on any feature they want on a permanent basis.
I don't love it, but it's not terrible.

The most annoying thing about Justin talking about anything is his tendency to express a point with 8 different senstences. I can easily summarize his ten minutes video into 30 seconds video.

Yeah, exactly.  That's what I'm saying.  Their banter is still good/fun, but there doesn't seem to be even the slightest spark in the reviews anymore.  That's probably also a symptom of PetaPixel demanding a higher volume of reviews and with a number of them being for things that are inherently uninteresting.
And I get it - to some extent, how much is there to say about a 21mm lens?  And in that review in particular, they didn't even seem to be doing any basic research before the videos - talking about Thypoch coming out with one (the Simera-C has had a 21/1.4 lens for months already, though with a different design) - and 21mm has been a Leica staple for many years with the 21/1.4 Summilux having been released in like 2008 (which makes sense since Thypoch, to some extent, is emulating Leica with the Simera series).  But yet, Chris acted like a 21mm lens was something he'd not heard of before...  presumably because he just doesn't care about what he's reviewing anymore.  It's a job.  Lens comes in, take some photos around Calgary, do some LoCa tests, shoot a test chart or two, lens go out.  Ready for the next lens to come in...
But they've also become a channel that won't publish a negative review at all.  I had high hopes for the new person - Sarah?  But then she did a review of some shitty wearable camera that seemed way more like an advertisement and any criticism mixed in with tons of praise, despite that the footage looked like pure garbage.  Then the next week in the Podcast, they acted like people were crazy for suggesting it, given that some small criticism had been slipped in to a 14 minute mostly positive review where the footage is described as "good enough" and since the gross oversaturated colors are "so vibrant there's not much you have to do to them."  To me the footage (the link should go right to the sample clips) could be much better described as "a gross, shaky jello-filled nightmare."  Later, in the conclusion, the presenter concludes that the camera is definitely worth the $200 price tag, despite that it's redundant with a smartphone and records with quality much worse than a smartphone.
If that shit is sponsored, it's not disclosed and they actively denied it - so that's gross.  If it's not sponsored, then PetaPixel's standards on cameras are incredibly different from mine.  It was already a thin ice - and posting videos heaping glowing praise on AI slop and deleting critical comments is just the last push that I needed.

Yeah, as a Lumix user I am biased towards them and I strongly believe that they are a better tool than what Sony and Canon are offering, but if this newfound praise is because of marketing then that's a real disappointment. I want authenticity when watching, reading, and conversing with people about these cameras, not marketing hidden as opinion.
It's one thing when you go into something knowing it's marketing, and we should all probably assume that everyone is just trying to sell us something at this point, but it sucks that we have it. It'd be really nice to have some authenticity.
Like even Justin is clearly enjoying this attention. I suppose he's at least honest about it, but I really just wanna geek out about cameras and equipment, even if this is kinda entertaining watching them fight.

Virtually any camera released in the last 10 years, if used with care and consideration, will look good. And ten years from now the GH5 will still be able to generate lovely images, assuming there are some still out there that work! The pace in which people upgrade cameras is crazy to me, it just seems pointless and wasteful.

I forgot to add, the Craterr video information makes me think that it might be related to several "creators" switching to Lumix recently. Armando and Cam are two of them who've switched and become VERY PRO Lumix, so it certainly makes me go "hmm." As much as I love Lumix and believe they are absolute powerhouses, it was and is very suspicious how many people were suddenly making the switch.

I'm not sure about the start, but those two videos seem to be a response to this pissing match on another one of Justin's videos.
It is really funny to see Cam spazzing and claiming he wasn't paid for videos when he got thousands of dollars in free gear as well as the views/revenue that come from day 1 launch as well as the associated affiliate marketing revenue.
I also hadn't heard of Craterr before. Sounds like a real 💩 of a platform, designed to make YouTube reviews even more insufferable.

Not sure what the situation is with Sigma and the Z mount.
They do three of their fast compact APS-C primes in Z mount but not the zooms or full frame.
They do more in RF mount but, again, no full frame.
You could speculate that pressure from both their L mount partners and their sensor supplier keeps them out of supplying the big two with full frame lenses.
In the case of Nikon it’s a bit moot as with the Megadap you can just buy the e-mount versions anyway and have them as near as dammit native anyway.

I think you might need to seek professional help before you go shoot up a pizza restaurant (which doesn't even have a basement).
The AltCine people took their camera out and saw a neat-looking building and filmed it.  To demonstrate detail, they zoomed in on a thing that has diagonal and curved lines that show aliasing.

They could got a flood of new customers just bringing the camera that all non-professional customers are looking now: a compact stylish camera. Basically, a FF GX9.

They launched it, but without EVF, hotshoe, mechanical shutter and proper controls. And the worst kit lens ever made. I know, they want to get in the video creator bandwagon, but was a niche product.

Visited Jikjisa Temple yesterday, which was founded in the year 418, and looks straight out of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.  Everywhere you turn there are compositions that make you gasp.

The main challenge with full sun like this is the high contrast scenes, and then grading them so they don't look faded and also don't have half the image almost while or half of it pitch black.
This one has slightly more contrast than I'm happy with, but it gives you a sense of the look things start to drift into.

When I'm grading them for real, I think I'll likely use large power-windows and pull things down or up using those.
As a reference, here's the kind of shot I'm talking about where the contrast ratios are just overwhelming.  The information is all in the files, so I'm capturing it all, I just have to pull it out.

I'm not sure of the warranty, but I've bought two things from them on Black Friday (last year and the year before, they had coupons for a big discount on their already pretty-low used prices - I think like 20% or 25%).  One was a C70 and the other was a Ronin-4D 6K (which I pretty quickly upgraded to the 8K).  Both were great deals and showed up in exactly the condition I expected from the website description.

I'm hoping that isn't a huge issue as pulling the clay is not crazy fast, and I try not to make those mistakes that often :).
Yeah I am not sure I need 10 bit log tbh. Don't think intra frame compression matters either if the wheel is just rotating in place. How is the color SOOC with minimal editing for the Panasonic vs Nikon?
Somehow the Fuji XT-3 is around $850 in the US due to all the Fuji hype from YT :(. It was my first thought too
Hmm Anamorphic seems interesting to play around but in the far, far, future
I think main problem with S1 is size (would like to be able to take the camera to galleries or on the street) and +$250 in price. Is manual focus such a huge issue with focus peaking and a static subject? I plan to tape where the tripod sits and mostly never move it.
Eventually I would like to film some interviews/short studio tours with artists when I go to Asia to visit family this summer but I am not so sure I need AF for that.
Also thank you everyone for the suggestions. I think I am going to pick up the S5 from B&H this weekend unless there is a huge difference to the Z6 in terms of color science.

Yep I already am doing that with my iPhone 13 Pro and planning to use that as my A/B cam to start (most likely to get hte wide angle shot). Altho I need to get a new tripod and phone mount because the one I bought in Japan for $15 disintegrating. I just loathe the lack of manual adjustability on the phone. Pottery (vlogging) on social media these days is also kind of saturated. I am not looking to become a vlogger but I am hoping filming with more careful framing, lighting, and depth of field.

Thanks for the advice. I think a time lapse feature would be useful for hand building but for throwing its a bit too slow to match the movement. I will definitely try to post a video here once I get up and running.
That guys seems to be right up my alley with the janky alternatives lol. Hmm definitely leaning towards the S5 then if record limit is not going to be an issue. How are the colors SOOC? Like I said to start I tend to overthink things so hoping to get a few videos out there with minimal editing/setup and learn the more advanced stuff as I go.

I get it, but you can get fine audio from almost any mic, as long as it's close enough to the source. Add some tweaking in post if needed and 99% of those watching aren't gonna notice the difference between a $100 mic and $500+ mic. As long as it's not peaking, there's no hum or other noise, it will be sufficient for YouTube.
I mean, heck, going back to my buddy that uses a cheap Movo wireless mic going into a T3i that has terrible audio preamps! That gets used on the local nightly news on the NBC affiliate!
I quite like Lumix colors, and the natural profile on the S5 is what I usually go with when I don't need to do heavy grading. As long as your white balance and exposure is set correctly you'll get very good results, and 8-bit is good enough to do some tweaks as long as you don't try to push the colors too much.
Markus is great in that he thinks of some creative ideas, especially outside the box ones. I quite like his video/photo content, though when I read up more about him I cringed quite a bit when it comes to his health/motivational speaking stuff. Aside from disagreeing with most of it, he is accused of hiring people to attend tapings so that it looks like he's giving these motivational speeches in front of large crowds that uses for promotional videos when they are just paid actors. So I just stick to the video/photo channel, haha!

I've never had an issue with using manual focus on the Lumix S5, and I usually use the screen instead of the EVF (I know, I know!) You can also buy a cheap 5 or 7 inch monitor if you have trouble nailing focus, but I've never had that problem personally.
Also auto focus really isn't that bad on the S5, especially if you are there to monitor it. I definitely understand why people who are used to PDAF complain, but I've used it for year and really don't have a ton of complaints about the auto focus, especially once you get used to its quirks. I know @MrSMW, who also used the S5 a lot, has similar views. Having PDAF on my S5II X is nice, but I still use AF on my two S5 bodies and it's "fine."
It's weather and dust proof! Haha! I am not trying to be a shill, but it really does blow my mind that this camera is so readily available for under $1000 on the used market. I just don't think you can beat it when it comes to video features, especially when it comes to full frame. It is very easy to overlook the EVF and auto focus when you take into consideration how powerful it is in every other way. And it's a camera that will still stand up 5 years from now, in terms of image quality and usability.
I've had it for a couple years now and I still haven't used all the features, like anamorphic and external RAW. So it's literally a camera that technically I could still grow into using if I decided I wanted to use those features down the road.
The only thing that I would warn about those is they can overheat when filming for long times and the X-T3 has recording limits in all modes, from what I remember. I really looked hard at Fuji a few years back; if not for the bad IBIS and the recording limits/overheating it was the system that I honestly thought would have been the perfect, as I really like Fuji colors.
It's still over $1,000 here in the States. I've been keeping my eye on the used prices because I increasingly want one haha!

I agree, and a decent U3/V30 rated SDXC card can handle 200 Mbit/s (25 Mbyte/s) no problem, which is very high bitrate for long-GOP HEVC and should be pretty much transparent video quality.
I've been using relatively cheap 128GB or 256GB Sandisk Extreme or Samsung Pro Plus UHS-1 U3/V30 cards for years (both rated for over 100 Mbyte/s write speeds by their manufacturers).
