For me this life style is as much about protecting my mental health than anything. There has to be more to life than work, and your work should be something that you enjoy. I tried working at a production company and it devastated my mental health. I just can't do it.

It's survival depends on a lot of things, but I agree that it needs PDAF to grow and thrive. The market spoke long ago, and it demands PDAF.

Maybe photographers will buy this camera, but it really seems like it's more video centric. I think they think it'll appeal to the hybrid shooter and video focused user mode than photo. I could be wrong though!

Good to know. The videos I saw would hunt back and forth excessively before getting focus. Maybe I will rent it when I have a gig that doesn't need AF, so if it works poorly I can still use it manually. The 24-105mm though is really appealing. It looks like it could be the one and done lens for my event work. Then for my other work I can get some primes and also use the kit lens. We'll see!

I think because Potato Jet is a working DP he was invited and allowed to film. I'm not sure that they specifically invited him because he's notable YouTuber, but it wouldn't shock me either if he was. It seemed like a gathering with a lot of industry people as opposed to influencers, though. What's fascinating is all the stuff that happens before the debayering process. Is that something new?

From the videos I've watched they unfortunately don't work well in video mode when it comes to AF. They work great for photos, but the results in video reminded me of trying to use AF with a speedbooster on my GH5. I was going to get the Sigma 28-70 but the results I saw were bad; I thought about renting it to see for myself but it feels like it'd be a waste of $90 or whatever dollars. Right now I'm using the kit lens and is quite a gem to be honest. I am looking at the Panny 24-105mm though, as F4 is more than enough for my sports and event work. Related: I really, really like the S5. I can't believe I got a lightly used one with a cage, 2 OEM batteries, and the kit lens for $1400. I highly recommend getting it, especially if you can find a deal. The image is so good.

I think putting the handles and matte box is as far as I'm going to go when it comes to trying to spiffy the camera up for clients. I'll add a monitor for functionality when I need it. To me, I want a compact, simple set up. I see "rig build" videos on YouTube and 90% of them are just way too much for me. 5 years ago I'd of had a totally different opinion, because I'd have been impressed and slightly jealous, but honestly the last thing I wanna do these days is spend more than 5 minutes setting up my camera rig and then have to lug this big thing around for a simple sit down talking head shoot or my friend blowing glass. LUMIX S5 + cage + Panasonic XLR helmet + Azden SGM-250CX + SmallRig HSR2511 right grip with record trigger + NiceyRig left grip with Arri Rosette + Mini Matte Box Lite = enough!

I will never understand why more companies haven't done more power zooms. That lens sounds like a killer, even if it is a little bit on the slow side. Well worth it for a versatile lens that can do all of that. I kind of agree, but also kinda just wish they'd build a fan straight into the camera. I get why they didn't, and I get that for MOST uses it will not be required, but it's just hard to get behind the idea of having to buy an external fan accessory to help with overheating. They are getting SO CLOSE, but I agree. There are just enough quirks still that make it hard to jump into the Fuji system. The big thing for me is they need updated lenses that can handle changes in exposure better. This new lens is definitely incredible, but what they've got out there right now aren't too good in this regard. That's a dealbreaker for me. The IBIS also doesn't look very good at all in video and seems more geared towards stills. My sports work needs good stabilization, because the cameras are so lightweight and small (+1 for the old heavy camcorders of yesteryear not needing stabilization because of how big and heavy they were!) I love those Fuji colors so much though! I look forward to trying it anyway!

I saw this earlier and was a little confused. Does this replace the L-Mount Alliance or is it in addition to it? One thing they absolutely need to do, in addition to the AF (if only so we can stop hearing about it), is open up the mount to more third parties. I'd love to see Tamron make some L-mount lenses, for example. I think that is an underrated part of Sony's strategy. They went from a mount that had very few lenses to one that has the most robust, mature native lens lineup out of anyone. Part of that is obviously because they got a head start, but also because you've got so many companies now making lenses for the mount that work really well with the cameras, from Sigma to even small Chinese companies like Viltrox. Contrast that with the L-Mount Alliance, where it's pointless to even try using autofocus with Sigma lenses on Panasonic bodies.

I've heard similar, though they were very easy to deal with when my OG BMPCC stopped working. They had me send it in, emailed me that they'd fix it for free, a week passed, and a brand new camera complete in shrink wrap arrived instead. But they were a much smaller company back then.

Absolutely! That's what so many people miss! It's not just about the camera, it's about what you're filming and all the pieces that go into it. When you put that much effort and skill into what you're filming it doesn't matter all that much what you're filming with.

Of course a big part of it is user error! I only watched a minute or so, but there's a lot of issues with that video. Frankly even with excellent AF that would've been a mess. If he knew how to use his camera and put in even the minimal amount of effort he very easily could've gotten better results. Shockingly holding a camera with one hand and putting zero effort into his shots produced poor results. I'm glad that there's cameras out there that would've done better at keeping him in focus, but I hate that it encourages such laziness. I wish you could see how hard I rolled my eyes at this. Lol. People flinging themselves through the air while having split seconds to move and frame the shot isn't challenging enough! "Try it with a bigger sensor while filming under f/2" he says, which is a weird thing to be saying while criticizing the GH5. It's okay to concede a point and say "you know, you're right, the autofocus did a good job there." Better to do that than to tell me to film sports with a bigger sensor and under f/2, which is exactly what you'd want to do while filming action sports! 🙄 You wanna know what's funny? I'm one of the few people who actually said these were solid releases from Canon, and somehow you chose me to argue with! 🤣

No, it was a Sennheiser XSW-D wireless lav. Unfortunately it has too hot of a signal for my Panasonic cameras, THOUGH I haven't tried it with my new Lumix S5 which allows me to lower the levels more.

Hyperbole much? I've literally stated for years at this point that Panasonic needs to fix its autofocus because it's what the market demands. Acknowledging its weakness, while expressing how the autofocus performance is overblown by YouTubers that don't spend enough time to get the best out of the camera, isn't being apologetic. It's sharing my experience as someone who uses these cameras for a variety of types of professional work, from sit down interviews to pro-wrestling. Who has a more valid opinion of Panasonic's autofocus? The person that filmed these clips or the people that tested the camera while bopping in and out of frame while it sat on a tripod? Are these shots unusable? Am I wrong to be satisfied with this AF performance? People just parrot what YouTubers say. How are these shots even possible given how AWFUL and UNUSABLE Panasonic's autofocus is?

I've actually won something from him, so I don't think they are fake. That is though why I was really bummed out when I found out about the other stuff. I've seen first hand the damage people selling fake cures can cause, and when I saw that and the lengths he went to create a fake image of himself it soured me.

You absolutely can use manual focus in all of those situations. I do all the time. And no one is arguing that Panasonic AF is behind everyone else. But a camera that overheats and is unusable is a far bigger issue than a camera that lacks PDAF. That's just a fact. One can still be used, while the other cannot. With that said, Panasonic AF is usable once you learn it's weaknesses and how to adapt. Single point AF is pretty reliable in real world use, to the point where I use it while filming pro-wrestling and that's pretty unpredictable. The only time it really struggles is in low light during ring entrances, but I combat that using a LED. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Like I said, I appreciate his camera channel, but he's deep into the pseudo nutrition/health grift. He has no medical background at all and thus shouldn't be giving out medical advice, like how to cure diseases ranging from Erectile dysfunction to brain cancer. If you want to encourage a healthier lifestyle or diet, fine, but his stuff goes well beyond that. It's very hard to find much background information on the guy, as he has invested a lot of money into SEO by having seemingly endless websites for himself. Anything critical of him is buried deep in search results. In addition to articles that criticize his stuff, there are also accounts of him hiring stand-ins to appear while he films material for his promotional videos. It's a bit disingenuous to be promoting yourself as this healer and motivational speaker while using staged footage of you giving speeches to paid stand-ins. The description for this video has a lot more information, too. My guess is RED is probably trying to force them into "license" the technology, presumably like they did with Apple. Is there any benefit to using N-RAW over ProRes RAW?

You can still operate a camera without autofocus. You can't operate a Canon camera if it's overheating. They aren't remotely similar. No one has had the camera long enough to do any real stress tests, re: overheating. Dan Watson said it's about 50 minutes. Virtually every other video has said the same, outside of Gordon Laing who did a test indoors under controlled conditions. Even Canon said it will last about an hour in 4K fine mode. 🤷‍♂️

The only real thing holding Panasonic back is the autofocus. It's what the market demands, whether us Panny users care about it or not. If they had comparable autofocus to Sony or Canon I think they'd have lured a lot of people away. They are superior video cameras in every other way.

I mean, autofocus doesn't really matter if a camera can't be used due to overheating. I think these are decent offerings, but you don't have to be too positive or too negative, it's okay to be neutral and take a wait and see approach.
