Tested the eos r vs the 1dx ii off my deck at night. No surprise, the 30mp didn't do as well, but it did better than I thought, except for one area which I found odd. (exact same settings, profile, lens etc) I wouldn't use the eos r past 8,000 iso for anything, the 1dx ii I wouldn't use past 16,000. 8k on the r looked slightly worse than the 1dx ii at 16k, but they looked fairly close. I noticed some x axis noise banding on the eos r between iso 1000 and 4000 which I thought was odd. There is a tiny bit on the 1dx in that range, but about 20% of what I saw on the R. I only saw it against a more uniform surface so it probably won't be a big deal. It's funny, I haven't seen any banding in the test photos I did, even when pushed to the unrealistic 5 stops (slight bit of color induction). The RAW seem'd to hold more contrast and have more pleasing noise in lifted shadows than the CR3. I hadn't used it before, just read that people think its the same quality, I think they are pretty close though. There was an interesting pattern when you lifted the shadows a lot in the CR3 & zoomed in to 100%. I have my mf'r button set to switch between c1,c2,c3 right now, i will look to see if i can get a button to adjust after single click. I set one earlier to left & right side in the custom button to be iso, but it only worked if I held the button and turned the dial idk. Oh Yeah: I have noticed sometimes in video & photo mode, the AF box freezes. You can't move it for up to 8 seconds randomly; I have no idea what that is about. I will have to use it more and try to see what is going on. I feel like it is a processor/ram issue, hopefully they know about it and fix it with firmware.

They needed to at least add an iso button, touchbar is worthless and you have to hold down a reassigned button, then change the top dial at the same time. The camera literally is a hand cramp machine. They need the wheel dial and iso button back. I'm either going to throw this thing in the toilet or give it to my wife, haven't decided yet.

Yeah, the 1D cameras fit my hand perfectly. I just was hoping this one would be close to a 5D so I didnt need a grip. Doesnt it weigh the same as a 5D when you and a grip? Somewhat defeats the lighter weight benefit of mirrorless lol. I dont care too much, I always carry the 1d around one handed, no strap & that weighs about 5.5lbs with a lens

I just got one today. I might be the only one who doesn't like the ergos. I'm 6'4" and I can only get about half of my hand on the camera if I am using it with one hand. I guess im screwed for the mirrorless age. Shutter button feels junky vs 1dx/5d, it can also stick if you don't press right in the middle perfectly. Again on ergos; you're thumb is going to rest on that touch bar nonsense. EF-RF adapter is long enough it makes your lenses feel much heavier if you hold the camera with 1 hand. Feels much better on a DSLR with the EF lenses, actually feels lighter vs the negative leverage on the adapted lenses. Haven't powered the thing on yet, waiting on batteries to charge.

I just got the Tamron 23-70 2.8 G2 for a stabilized lens when i'm in NY and don't want to take a gimbal. I noticed that even if I hold it really steady in once place, the footage shows a constant micro jump on the x axis. If I pan, it kind of sticks very subtly, then catches up every 10 degrees of rotation. The few reviews I saw, said that it was extremely stable, and did well with panning. I expected the panning to not be perfect, but is it supposed to do these weird micro jumps every 1 second on the x axis while holding steady?

I usually like some of this guys videos, but his was a hack job imo. He tweaked the HD footage and 4k footage to try and make them look as similar as possible. Never seen the 4k that soft from anything i've shot with Canon 4k. People do anything to justify their purchases, or get views.

I dont think it would stop the average buyer on this camera. They probably wouldnt even know what rolling shutter is if the reviewer mentioned it.

I heard that some older lenses do not work so great with the video AF. What fast lenses can I get that will perform well? On full frame, I like (f/1.4-2) 25mm and 35mm with some 85mm

I think some copies of the camera are worse than others. I tested raws from a few different places and the camera dpreview had didn't seem to be too bad. There are some big threads on their forums where people are posting before & after of just a 2 stop push and there seems to be quite a bit of color banding. I don't think it's anything people will see on their output to IG or whatever they post it to, but I wouldn't make a large print. Look at the example on the bottom of page 8 only a few stops recovery, crazy.. hopefully they can fix it in an update, but idk. https://***URL removed***/forums/thread/4329433?page=8 That will be interesting to see, thanks for checking. Also, have you tested the crop mode 1080p? It looks to be very nice 1080, supposedly supersampled.

Good article that is relevant to us, unlike all the "tech reviewers & photographers". The only thing I dont know if I agree on, is saying it's really close to a c200 crop wise. C200 is 1.5x & eos r is nearly 1.8x? For photos; it also has some nasty banding/coloring that can start to become visible at 3 stops & up. If you shoot a landscape in sunrise or sunset towards the light source (sun), I have found you generally need 2-4 stops of shadow recovery. It should be fine photo wise for most people though, you can always bracket.

I ordered this camera (canceled) to use mostly for photos and some b cam stuff, but I just really want a smaller, more descreite 1dx ii lol. I might just get an xt3 for some travel stuff until canon makes a pro rf camera. The lenses are very amazing and they have shown huge improvements in what they are releasing for video features. The next RF camera should be a total beast. I would still like to see this camera put next to a c100 ii in cropped mode and the 4k vs the c200.

Saw a video on vimeo where the guy said that the eos r actually super sampled its 1080p when in the 1080p cropped mode (apsc mode or whatever idk). I noticed on mattis video that when he switches from full frame 1080p to the cropped 1080p, it is extremely detailed on the guys face. That looks more like c100 ii footage to me lol. Its at 13:25 in the video.

This camera only needs 60 MB/s on the 4k, so a 95 MB/s UHS-1 SD should work fine? I know it depends on the minimum/average speed. I have CFAST cards, but don't feel like spending a bunch on UHS-2 cards to try it out if I get curious.

I like how everyone lost their mind when the 5d iv/1dx ii had 500 mbps on 4k 24p, this camera has mp4 at 480 mbps 4k 24p and no one complains about the size lol
