    Mini Slider

Put it on the floor while with an RX100 on it to record a couple of quick clips for you today so you could see it in action ! This was on smooth-ish flooring but a small strip of lino to run it on would make a difference. Its not going to give the makers of real motorised sliders any sleepless nights but with a bit of post stabilisation (which these clips obviously don't have) its not bad at all. And its very stealth. I'm going to experiment with pimping the wheels with some chunkier tyres. C0018.mov C0017.mov
  3. Its the side mounting holes that can make the difference and can give you the extra point of contact with a pistol grip. If you are using something small like a GX80 then shaping the MOVO into a chest or belt configuration and putting the grip on the side as above you can grip the camera with your left hand, hold the pistol grip with your right and your third point of contact is the chest or your belt area. Its not as sophisticated as the Edelkrone was (which you would expect for the price) as you have to manually tighten and loosen the arms but, for me at least, the mounting holes give it more potential all round utility.
  4. I remember back in the Epic days they came up with the M version which people could jump the queue ahead of the X version if they stumped up the money so its not without precedent for them. Not sure whats gone on here as it seems a confused picture as to why they seemingly couldn't deliver until 2018 and now they are available from stock at Apple. I thought there might be some reaction on Reduser to it if they had bypassed a bunch of backorders to favour Apple but there doesn't seem to be. Mind you, Jannard could go on there and tell them all to fuck off and the reaction would pretty much be this
  5. How well it works for that specific movement will vary from person to person I suppose. My own physiology isn't conducive to decent walking shots anymore because of the amount of damage I've done to my shoulder over the years but the MOVO does improve it over handheld. What is interesting about it though is that it can be shaped in so many different ways so I've done some experiments with turning the last piece up instead of down so it hooks under the shoulder which with my physiology is actually a bit better. So the answer I suppose is that it depends ! But there is a ton of flexibility to it that you can find a way that suits you personally better. I've just done this quick illustration for you of what else you could do if you put it into a more basic inverted L shape. Because of the mounting points on all of the arms you could side mount two cheap pistol grips (I only have one so you'll have to use your imagination but basically it would go directly on the other side!) to do something with a different take on the Fig approach where it would be gripped like handlebars. I've put the other picture from the other thread of the grip being used in a more conventional way for anyone who is only looking at this thread and hasn't seen it. A couple of these grips (which are inexpensive and way hardly anything) can do offer a lot of scope with the MOVO without breaking the bank or your back. Grips are here https://www.amazon.co.uk/Neewer-Handheld-Stabilizer-Panasonic-Samsung/dp/B018LQEFL4/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1501604216&sr=1-1&keywords=Neewer+Camera+Handle+Pistol+Grip
  6. That answers what was going to be my next question about what I've just seen out of my hotel window then. Thats as reasonable an explanation as I've been able to come up with. I had pondered whether they seem taller because the bikes are taller though as well. No, seriously.
  7. Its interesting to read @cantsin and @Cinegain view on the deteriorating situation in Holland as I'd come back to this thread to say that the place I've found to be bucking the trend while I've been on this assignment here for the past three weeks was, erm, Holland! In smaller places like Tilburg and Breda that I've been working, I was surprised to find that both had two very well stocked stores as well as MediaMarkts with decent selections. The camera stores also had a good selection of accessories like sliders and cages and lens adaptors too. The point being I suppose is that it if this is Holland in a decline then it puts into perspective just how bad its become in the UK because these stores had as broad a range of product on display as you'd find in central London. A couple of things about Holland that puzzle me though if you can help me guys, is 1) What is the deal with the number of Tesla S cars? Are they heavily subsidised or something because they are absolutely everywhere. I thought I was seeing things when I saw they were used as taxis! 2) How can one quick squirt of sauce on the top layer of a cone of frites penetrate the rest of them? If I did that with an English cone of chips it would only cover the exposed ones yet your places manage to make it coat every one of them in the cone. It seems to be the reverse of what you are able to do with reclaiming the land from the sea.
  8. On the other hand, it could just be the cult thing and they're about to purchase a South Pacific island and start hollowing out a volcano.
  9. FCPX gets an exclusivity period on the plugin to edit content for the Hydrogen maybe? The maturity of Resolve into a full blown editor and its ability to run on cheaper hardware using different OS might be concerning them ever so slightly. How long will it be before buying a big spec Mac and FCPX for editing versus a Linux or Windows machine with a monster graphics card and free Resolve looks a bit reckless financially, if its not there already? People are already looking at the cost and performance of newer Macs and not seeing enough difference to buy an upgrade. Supplementing what you've got Mac wise with a dedicated Resolve machine using gaming components seems a better spend to me right now and I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that. Taking some degree of control of the content creation for 'the next big thing' if that's what the Hydrogen is to become is a way of stopping that drain.
  10. Its a bit mind boggling to consider the sort of fanboy cult an alliance between RED and Apple could potentially produce. Its going to be like the moonies merging with the scientologists. Via USB-C
  11. The next month or so should reveal more information apparently. The problem I have is that the go to source for info about it should be the reduser site but I can't last more than a few more minutes on there because of the sycophancy. I went over there earlier to see what it was all about regarding RED selling the cameras through the Apple store and pretty much did this.
  12. Depending on the lens, there are usually between 250-300 individual points that Panasonic cameras can drive the lens to from closest focus to infinity when in manual mode so there is enough precision there but the ballistics of it are a bit quirky. From an external control point of view there are only two speeds - the slow one which moves it in the individual increments and the fast one which moves it by a multiple of ten of those (so 25-30 coarse points from end to end). Trying to move the focus point with a combination of only those two types of increments causes the weird acceleration behaviour because its trying to anticipate where you are going to end up. If you want to do A/B focus transitions then this is where an external controller can potentially make things much better as it knows the ultimate distance and can calculate a smoother ride using the two speeds. It will always have some lumps in it as only being able to move one or ten steps is never going to be ideal but at least the overall issue can be masked with a slower acceleration and deceleration. I've made some progress with this and it won't be long now before people will be able to try it themselves.

I have a wide variety of overpriced cases and bags that I haul stuff round in. Its the abuse the gear gets when its taken out of them that causes the problems for me.

Yes I have one and only one piece has fallen off it so far in its travels in my stupidly filled bag in the past three months. In that same period of work I have broken the memory card slot on a Fuji X-T20, chipped the rear optic on a Nikon 1.4TC, killed a Panasonic battery charger with rain and totally destroyed the rear screen of my beloved Nikon Df. And we still have another week of this current trip to go. So, in relative terms, its doing quite well !

On a complete tangent..... Go motorised for under $50 (including some strips of lino which you'll need outdoors!). Fits in your pocket and honestly with a small camera it is far better than it has a right to be for the price.
  17. I've been asked via PM regarding is it possible to use a pistol grip with the MOVO foldable rig so thought it better to share the answer here in case anyone else needs it. The answer is yes, you can use one such as this cheapie from Amazon and screw it into the mounting plate either fore or aft of the camera. As the MOVO also has mounting points on all of its arms you could side mount it with any number of adapters if you'd prefer it on either side of the camera. Once its on you can then do the usual shaping stuff with the MOVO to use it as a shoulder mount or top handle as shown in the inset pic. Handle I'm using is this one here https://www.amazon.co.uk/Neewer-Handheld-Stabilizer-Panasonic-Samsung/dp/B018LQEFL4/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1501604216&sr=1-1&keywords=Neewer+Camera+Handle+Pistol+Grip
  18. Same as M43, you can get adapters to Fuji X from virtually any mount so from CY to Nikon to PL and all points in between. The Nikon lens turbos are cheap and give some great options with the X-T2 or X-T20 My love affair with the X-T20 hit the rocks on last night's job when the spring went in the memory card slot. Had to fish the card out like getting ketchup out of a bottle with a knife.
  19. You could do with some sort of hardware controller that let's you adjust the exposure compensation on the fly using dedicated buttons....
  20. Just for a bit of balance regarding service turnarounds, Nikon had a D4 of mine for so long I thought I was going to have to put a picture of it on milk cartons. They then had to have it back to remedy the botched fix for another period of time where their radio silence had me on the verge of demanding a picture of it with a daily newspaper as proof of life. And if you ever have a Hasselblad that shows a calibration error prepare to tearfully wave it off on its journey by rowing boat to Denmark. A slow rowing boat. With a paddle missing. Fortunately, this gives you enough time to save up for the bill. So whilst I'll still maintain the Leica EVF thing is ridiculous from a testing perspective, things are not always sweetness and light when it comes to premium products from other manufacturers either.
  21. It was a throwaway about irrational gear lust so my purse was never in serious danger of leaving my handbag.
  22. Been doing some extensive research myself overnight. Its called Terre d'Hermès apparently and according to the manufacturer its "a symbolic narrative revolving around a raw material and its metamorphosis. A novel that expresses the alchemical power of the elements. A water somewhere between the earth and the sky. A journey imbued with strength and poetry. Woody, vegetal, mineral." I'll be dousing myself in this and inviting Sofia over for what I believe the youngsters call "Netflix and chill". Or "Netflix from an approved list of 4K capable originating cameras and chill" as its known on here.
