  1. The feature I really wish they'd put into this is the instant 100% rebate against it for people who've recently bought one of Sachtler's non-revolutionary sets of legs. <cough> To be honest, while I can see where they're going with this, its not the jaw dropping life changer they were trailing it as. The single biggest pain in the arse about hauling a tripod around for most people is that they're hauling it round at all. The last few seconds of saving that this offers doesn't really change that. As I say, if I'd had the option, I'd have bought these instead for sure but my view is that there IS a revolution out there somewhere for camera support. This isn't it though.
  2. Am I right in thinking that this ML Digic 6 development could make the M5 a bit of a DPAF+RAW pocket rocket?
  3. This is a bit more of a fly on the wall affair! Its looks to me like a dealer has live streamed a Panasonic rep doing a demo to his staff or customers and there is some interesting HFR stuff in there if nothing else. If you can get round the ambient sound which makes it sound like it was shot in a shared space with a cafeteria and/or a bicycle bell demonstration facility.
  4. After watching the programme, it became even more alarming. It could barely detect the motor in the off the shelf bike shown in that preview and even it would fire off so many false positives elsewhere around the frame that without taking the bike apart (which in 2000+ tests of bikes using that gadget by the UCI on pro bikes they've never done even when its been pinging!) they'd still never know. It was when the programme then did it on the $60K 'pro' version of the motor thats hidden in a wheel that the device completely failed to detect it at all. There is a huge amount of suspicion around Froome's performance on Mount Ventoux in the 2013 TDF and to bring this back on topic I was actually shooting at the spot where he made one of the suspicious attacks but all I'd say is that if he was using one of these devices then with my luck shooting that race then he'd have certainly not only crashed into me but also electrocuted me for good measure !
  5. There is an expose on French TV this evening regarding wheels, magnets, batteries and the less than accurate device the UCI use to detect motor doping that might make a few people twitchy.....
  6. Have a browse through these, some of which ('Kingdom Of The Japanese' and 'Oriental Landscapes' for example ) might be in the ballpark for you. https://www.proudmusiclibrary.com/en/tag/taiko
  7. By the way, I meant play them simultaneously. Its not entirely clear in the first post I did! The interaction between the two pieces when you let the first one play and skip around to random places in the second one makes it particularly unsettling!
  8. Let me have another listen and I'll get back to you tomorrow with some ideas.

    Insta360 One

I know 360 video isn't everyone's cup of tea but the potential offered by this particular one (in terms of what it can do rather than the quality it can do it with) is pretty fascinating to me. I have the Theta S and its actually pretty great for holiday pictures and family stuff to be honest and I was intrigued by the new V version of it announced today but linked in the article I was reading was the Insta360 One which is also ready to be released and I hadn't seen it before. Yes, the quality of it is a million miles off where it needs to be but watching this video with Lok, its got amazing potential for vloggers and the ability to "shoot first and point later" as they put it and then use the app to post reframe and track faces etc to make regular video from is very cool. It makes me think that this is a far more interesting use for this technology than what everyone originally intended we should be doing with it which is to strap a pair of goggles on to immerse yourself in what you've shot (though even on a low res device like the Theta this is actually good fun). If this is what can be done for $399, it doesn't take much of a leap to imagine what we could have for $1500 if one of the bigger manufacturers got involved. I hope that the tricks this thing can pull of might attract their attention. By the way, if you watch the official video for it (as Lok's attempt was a bit of a fail) the bullet time using a piece of string thing is crude but genius !
  10. You'd have to test them side by side but I'd be very surprised if there was a justification for anywhere near that multiplier. Tokina's own cine version of it didn't exist at the time the Sony was released (2011) so it and the Duclos where the only way to get it in that format. You'd have to decide which one better suited what you are doing as the Sony weighs twice as much and has a 105mm filter thread versus 82mm on the Tokina, either or both of which may be a factor for you.
  11. I can only go by what I'm reading in that thread that it is a re-housed version of it so if it it is then yes. Tokina do their own PL cine version of it here https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1196837-REG/tokina_tc_116p_cinema_11_16mm_t3_0_with.html And Duclos do a re-housing of it here https://www.ducloslenses.com/products/duclos-11-16mm Both of those versions have more users of them than the Sony so more real life reports will be available to research I suspect. I haven't used any of them (though I do have an absolutely shredded Nikon version of the stills version !) so I wouldn't be able to comment on the pros and cons of the three of them with respect to each other.
  12. The CineAlta PL primes are very, very well thought of and can be had for 'bargain' (its all relative) prices if you keep your eye out as some dealers may have had them as demo stock. With regard to this specific lens, it does seem to be a re-housed Tokina from what I can gather so there are other options out there for a PL version of that lens but if you have seen the Sony version at a steal price then steal it http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?275497-Sony-11-16-or-Duclos-Tokina-11-16 This vimeo channel has some footage from it https://vimeo.com/user895207 And a review from Matthew Allard of it is here
  13. Are you are up for a bit of experimentation to make something unique ? Of course you are! Open two browser windows, both with YouTube on In the first one, put something like this, which is a royalty free suspense type piece And then in the other one, put something like this. If you move the play position of the second one round then you can create some sinister and interesting stuff. When you're happy with two pieces that you find then you can then just do that properly in your NLE by sliding the tracks around to create your own composite. More fun, more creative, more exclusive and generally cheaper as 'Royalty Free' stuff generally does still have an initial licensing charge.
  14. We have definitely had a few on here. There have been three or four 'users' who popped up and offered some seemingly helpful yet clearly cribbed from a script information midway through a thread. They had been triggered by a camera model or term by the looks of it. So, for example, someone might say "Has anyone used the AF-C mode on a Fuji X-T2?" and there would be a reply along the lines of "In continuous-servo AF (AF-C), the camera continues to adjust focus to compensate for changes in the distance to the subject while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. This makes it a good choice for subjects that are in motion." And there would usually be a link for 'further reading' about it. So the replies looked contextually correct but the information in them was always set out in this definition style. A few of them looked like they were triggered by a term from a user guide and then the section of the user guide was posted. One interesting thing is that we seem to have not been invaded by the 'love and spirit guide guru' offerings that we used to get a lot of and I actually think they were triggered by the amount of discussion of the Black Magic cameras as the spambot often referenced black magic banishment in its offerings. Its definitely indicative of the decline in the discussion of the BM cameras for me. Ironically, @jonpais I wonder if what you listed in the pinned thread regarding guidelines for posting on Al Jazeera might make this issue more prevalent over there as having a defined set of rules would make these bots more easily shaped to fit in with what a 'real' poster looks like? With regard to anonymity, it probably can make people more suspicious if you post under a pseudonym and without a real profile picture so I should probably remedy that myself and change my own profile name and picture to actually be me. Best Regards Mr. Pixtech 8500
  15. Absolutely no argument regarding the form factor aspect against the GH5, more about where it sits for potential buyers in the market its priced at and will it have enough for those people to turn their back on the commercial realities of Canon and Sony being a safe bet in the eyes of their clients too. The AF, EVF and internal RAW (and not external at some future point like the EVA) of the C200 are strong arguments even without their strong position in that sector with other products. Canon's protectionist choice of codec for their recent 'update' could easily be reversed if the EVA gained traction and thats what would concern me. To match the RAW and EVF advantages of the C200 will take probably another £2K of external add ons so Canon could make a laughably easy profit by making the codec a paid upgrade and still be cheaper. Of course by having that EF mount on it, Panasonic have not only lost the advantage of being able to offer (and profit from) a huge range of very decent M43 lenses but can now only have the same lenses as Canon but with far, far less effective AF. I'm sort of kind of maybe possibly if I sell some stuff in the market for one of the two of them but its a tricky call so I think I might go to the IBC and have a look at them. And then buy a GH5
  16. I think Ethan is referring to the choice of EF mount over M43 mount Jon. The mount choice makes less and less sense the more I think about it. The single argument for having the EF mount is that it is a more robust option for professional use. Considering how many M43 cameras get used in less than ideal circumstances by everyone from amateurs to hobbyists to professionals with all manner of adapters and all manner and weight of lenses hanging off them, you'd expect there to be a ton of anecdotal evidence of the lack of robustness of the M43 mount wouldn't you? Balanced against that single argument is a world of flexibility (and upgrade path) that Panasonic have closed off. Its not like having the M43 mount would stop people using EF lenses on it. All it achieves is stopping people from using them in a better way.
  17. The SLR Magic 1.33 40 Compact looked like the one to me but the price differential between Europe and the states for it is ridiculous. £699 isn't outlandish really but compared to the $499 it is at B&H then it is an absolute piss take.
  18. I think this is currently how a lot of people are over the GH5. Not by putting an EF mount on it and offering less reasons for your existing customer base to upgrade to it thats for sure. The EVA1 is going to have to rock people's world image wise because for all people talk about it being a different market, they have to remember that the current safe bet in that market is not Panasonic so its going to take something special to bring people from Canon or Sony. They're not doing it with price thats for sure.
  19. Its the comparative aspect of that now more so than anything with the GH5 setting the bar for what one of their own cameras can do for a quarter of the price isn't it? They may have performed an 'Inverse Canon' move here
  20. No camera footage unfortunately but a good report from an attendee at a presentation that Panasonic did in Hamburg. What I find interesting seeing it in this context is that when you actually see it in people's hands, it looks a lot more compact than I was imagining it was. Surprised that if you want wifi control that you need a separate dongle. Its the same with the JVC LS300 but I'm surprised its the same with Panasonic because its integrated into every camera they do. Hopefully like JVC this will be able to use any old £6 dongle rather than something expensive and proprietary. I'm curious about this camera now. On the one hand, it has probably been helped with recent news about Canon's C200 updates which most people have been underwhelmed by but has the recent news about the GH5's updates done it any favours? Odd situation that it now goes to IBC - where it finally shows what it can actually do - having more to prove against one of its own products than its competitor in some respects. Its odd enough that it makes me suspect that its possibly going to be pant wettingly good. Is anyone on here genuinely interested in buying one ?
  21. I bet you Nikon are really chuffed they let him have a go with it, aren't they? I mean, I have to say that based on this test, the D850 is absolutely off my list now if it can't even be used for shooting wide open on an f1.4 non VR short tele whilst waving it round randomly.
  22. Haha.....if I was that smart I would've accepted that my Mr. Bean demeanour wasn't conducive to being out and about in public wielding heavy equipment ! At least I and the newspaper buying public get to have souvenirs of the mishaps though such as (top left to bottom right) - Apologies for the low res but they're just grabs off the agencies preview page. "The road I crashed the motorhome on" "The last shot the camera on the tripod took before the farmer tried to steal the tripod" "The last shot taken with my Samyang 8mm fisheye before I gifted it to a fan" "The shot taken with my remote camera actually in motion, spinning backwards after being kicked by a police motorcyclist" I did a few stages of Lance's ill advised comeback Tour but only started covering it more comprehensively from 2012 onwards as there became a market for it in the UK when all of our curiously asthmatic British riders started to win it. So am I. Unfortunately, its not a very big fan of me
  23. I've just had a breathless email inviting me (and approximately 2 million others I suspect) to the launch of a tripod that will do no less than 'revolutionise the way you work'. And apparently, if I'm thinking its "just a tripod" then I'm being urged to "think again". Does anyone know or like to speculate what it is thats making everyone this giddy? http://www.tripod-revolution.com
  24. My most (very) recent one was shooting an entire goal celebration sequence on the 'grab camera' (basically a backup with a wide on it that we have on the floor in case of crowd/arty/players coming over the ad board shot opportunities) of probably 40 frames of the scorer deliriously celebrating a vital goal right into the lens and then discovering I had no memory card in it. No, really. I've had a few mishaps with long lenses in the heat of battle. One being falling down a grass embankment at the Le Mans 24 hour race while carrying a Sigma 300-800 over my shoulder and tearing my shoulder ligaments. It was hour 1 of the race so I had another 23 of shooting to go in excruciating pain. The residual damage from that is the reason for my pro mirrorless experiments. Another was spinning a Nikon 400mm f2.8 AF-I on a monopod from behind my shoulder (we have them pointing backwards rested into the shoulder for quick access) a little too fast and hitting myself on the side of the head with it. The reason I quote the full name of that lens is that its the heaviest 400 f2.8 that Nikon have ever made (just under 7kg) so it was quite a knock. Being hit with long lenses is quite an occupational hazard though in big games when we are so bunched together but thankfully most people have got the more modern sub 4kg varieties! I could write a good few thousand words recounting my mishaps while shooting the Tour de France, which would include but not be limited to, a head on collision in a motorhome on a mountain, being punched by a police officer, being hit by collapsing metalwork when a team coach crashed into the finish line, having a fight with a farmer who was trying to steal my tripod and the time I was running really late and was waved through a checkpoint by a steward only to see the entire field bearing down on me in my rear view mirror as we hurtled towards the finish line. I have also routinely forgot things. Like batteries, monopods, remote triggers, memory cards. And that I'd taken two lenses up to the very back row of the Nou Camp to do a wide stadium shot, meaning that someone got a very nice gift of a fisheye when they took their seat for the game a few hours later. In my defence for all these mishaps, it is a very frantic and pressured working environment and things like this are inevitable. Especially when you are as incompetent and accident prone as me
  25. There are two users appeared on here called "Evgeny Magata" and "evgenymagata" both of whom have only posted about this project. Are you Evgeny Magata Snr or Junior? Paranoid? Haha, yes that is funny to be fair. Just to clarify, I'm not paranoid as I don't really give enough of a fuck about this to do more than a Roger Moore slight eyebrow raise. I probably would be paranoid if there was someone called "btmpix" posting more or less the same content as me though. All on the same thread. At the same time. But that's just me. I didn't say YOU had been on dpreview so, by your own measure, if me mentioning someone who had gets you all paranoid then that's funny. Just to be on the safe side I'm putting you and lowercase you on ignore as I really can't be arsed debating something with someone with such an obvious agenda.
