I'm thinking of going electric like Dylan and buying native E-Mount lenses for my a6300. Since I've been working for a commercial production house, I figure stabilization and AF could be very useful in commercial work, and my own narrative work, since I don't have the benefit of an AC, like ever. I'm thinking of the Sigma 19mm 2.8 DN and Sony 50mm 1.8. I like the look I've seen from these lenses. Anyone have any thoughts/advice? I'm used to using manual lenses, so I don't have any experience with this. I won't be shooting anything fast moving, just glidecam and slider shots.

You might be giving your age away with that Dylan statement! :grimace:

  2. I know this has well not a lot to do with Video, but this is the damn-est web page I have ever seen for super large ships, and beautiful cities around the world. Some of us have been lucky to have seen a few of them, I have, I can guess a few on here who have also. But if you have Never been out of the state you live in, country you live in, continent you live in you NEED to travel more LoL.

There is some just drop dead gorgeous places in the world, and some amazing people that live in them.. Go see the damn things and video, photo shoot them before you fall over dead.. There are probably people that live in one of these cites on this web site here.  :glasses: Hell go make a movie in one of them. You only live once.

I just want them to reduce the price of this damn BMPCC. Still the same price as when it came out, plus used market is still quite expensive in comparison to the retail price :s

Yes and you have to take into account that X amount of people Only paid 500 bucks for one for awhile.

The image quality doesn't even come close. GH5 with the promised 10bit 4.2.2 300mbs firmware update -  maybe?

Oh I still doubt it is going to look as good as the Raw on a BMPCC. But they are not very practical without a rig. And by the time you rig one out really nice you are not too far form a GH5 price. I just don't know if they are worth the hassle anymore. And that Look is only needed for people like us, on here, compared to thousands of people that want the digital look, buying them for the 4k..

And with the GH5 heck you don't even need a tripod for a lot of stuff. And a really good monopod might be a great thing to invest in for a lot of the rest, the ones with the feet or foot on them...

Its like a Sony F3, I have always wanted one, but you need to buy the one with the true 444 upgrade in them, and they are over 2000 bucks. Are they still worth it? That is GH5, Canon C100 territory, damn near a original Mini Ursa price! I am not sure on that move either. A F3 is old just like my Af100, does that make them useless no, but now I think maybe better stuff is out there for nearly the same money. Hard decisions when you don't have a lot of cash. And it is not just the body you are buying, it is the System you are getting into. That is where it gets damn expensive. :astonished:  But hopefully you can use parts of it on another camera.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about 5D3 ML Raw is that it is difficult to shoot with, but in reality, once everything is set up, it is the simplest camera to operate. And even though there are a few extra post steps, color work is pretty simple and straightforward as well.

Well I guess you ought to know, you seem to be getting some damn good footage out of one.

I took some quick shots today with a GH5 and 5D and hope to upload RAW DNGs and VLog TIFFs for comparison. For now here's a teaser:

    jv8PtUc.jpg

    M59tcSU.jpg

    GH5: f5.6 - 1/800s - ISO400 - C4K - VLog - 10bit - ETTR - no noise reduction - no sharpening

    5D: f5.6 - 1/400s - ISO100 - 3520 x 1320 - 12 bit lossless - ETTR - upscaled to 4096 x 1540 - no noise reduction - no sharpening

    But which is which? :tounge:

I would almost bet a professional Colorist could make the GH5 look just like the 5D mkIII or vice versa. Sharpness, well Raw probably wins there on the 5D a bit. So it comes down mostly to DR, low light ability. With a SP I think that takes care of the low light, DR well, I give a 5D 3 a clear 1 stop advantage eh, but no more.

This makes a not so easy choice! Well for overall all ease of use, the GH5 kills it, for OOC ML a pain in the ass, but probably worth it if output is the ultimate goal here.

And hyalinejim thanks for taking and showing us these comparisons. Good stuff.

Oh heaps of things they could gimp on it to differentiate it from the Varicam LT. Such as: no raw, no interchangeable mount, no 4K 60fps, no genlock, or no 2K 240fps. They might even do something really stupid like have no built in ND filters, or no timecode.

No way this thing is doing Raw for 6500 bucks. You are probably right on that point.

And really, the difference between some of these premium lenses and their less expensive counterparts is like comparing an Audi to a Honda Civic. Nevertheless, I've seen vloggers who've just posted their first clips with lenses as good as the Leica Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 or the DG Summilux 12mm f/1.4 that look no better than those shot with a kit zoom, so some viewers may be fooled into believing it's just a matter of aperture fastness and nothing else. Which may be one reason why I've posted so many videos shot with the Leicas. Then there's build quality - it wasn't until I'd actually held a Voigtlander Nokton in my own hands that I realized what a pleasure it is to handle glass made the old world way. And for many, I imagine the Leica 12-60mm may be the first MFT lens they own that doesn't feel cheap. Yet, I believe it was F Stoppers, when unboxing their GH5s and assorted lenses, that they remarked how plastic-y the G Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 felt, as if it were made of tin - the first time in the four years since purchasing mine that a reviewer corraborated my own impressions. Panasonic somehow manages the magic trick of making camera bodies and lenses that don't necessarily inspire confidence in the same way as say, Fuji, but somehow their products just perform great and seldom fail.

I would argue that Panasonic makes some of the nicest Kit Lenses of any company, probably not build wise, but they are pretty cheap to buy. But a lot probably has to do with all the electronic mumbo jumbo they do to correct deficiencies in the lenses they manufacture also helps!

Some of their descriptions kill me!

re: the Leica Nocticron - It may cost a fair few pennies, but it will be money well spent, especially as the price isn't obnoxious in any way. ($1,397.00 USD) ?

re: the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO -  Image quality is excellent, the lens handles well and it's not badly priced either. ($1,499.00 USD) ?

Yes, I noticed that. Well maybe they they are, well they Are making a heck of a lot more money than we are to say those statements...

But my daughter lives in California, and heck if you don't make 75 to 100 grand a year, or more, you are considered nearly below the Poverty level there LoL. So they could Afford those lenses.

Where I live in Ohio a Ford Focus, or a Honda Civic is common, when I go to California a BMW, or a Audi is the common car there. So go figure.

Good thing Leica doesn't make video cameras. Imagine what a 5x Cine zoom lens would cost from them on a s35 PL mount! Make a Cooke lens look like a bargain. :grimace:

  9. Well I guess a lot depends on if you plan on using any long, heavier lenses now, or in the future. the 1D series is way better for that purpose. The 5D mkIV works for shorter lenses, but I doubt the weight difference is that much of a saving over the 1D.

I don't have much of a love for either one. I agree with IronFilm, they both are just too overpriced for video use for what you get. Canon in reality just doesn't give a shit about video for anything they make, unless it starts with a C---. And even the C series seems gimped as hell at times. I have no clue what they think about in a Boardroom meeting about video??  I think maybe They are clueless at times. They sure as heck are not market leaders in Video. Sony has that honor by miles.

But I think everyone needs to pick up the pace that is behind in video. I am sure even Still Digital cameras will be using Video in a sense, just lke the 6k Photo mode mode is in the GH5. People will just take bursts of video and pick out the best for Photos.

    That's actually a good idea.
I don't know much about canon lenses though. Do you have any suggestions for some lenses that would work well with both systems (for video mostly). Preferably lenses that aren't too big/heavy.

Canon 24-105mm f4 lens is pretty much the video standard on even top end video cameras.

  11. Well I have to agree. Reason I have a AF100. Gets the job done. Great learning tool also. And hell it looks impressive as hell on a tripod LoL. I live in a college town, you can't believe how many "girls, well women" want to give a old turd like me their Phone Number LoL. They all, "boys, well men" also, mostly drunk by the way, not as many, want to be in the "Movie"  Crazy ass stuff LoL.

I got two GH5's 'kuz of a film I'm doing, but also to serve a client's demands for 60p video in 4K.

Thats kind of the only reason. If I didn't have that job I would have went with Olympus --as my film is 24p.

Ironically, most people here are trying to run away from the "video" look, but that's what my paying job demands!

On the other hand, my film will be on the other side of the IQ spectrum-aesthetic.  Best of both worlds, eh?

Regardless, it's a nice camera so far and It'll fit my needs just fine.

Olympus, like in the EM1 mkII Olympus?? Really? Why so? Heck of a lot of ? marks here!

  13. And I don't have a clue if A1ex at ML will ever do it, but whats not to stop someone from hacking a C100 to shoot 2k, 2.5k, heck even 4k, It has a 4k, or maybe more sensor in it? Same sensor as the original C300, C500 as far as I know.

I've probably gotten more skilled in the last two months than I have in the last two years, so I know how it feels to use a camera and compare it to other operator's videos and question what I was doing wrong.

Luckily I am too thick headed to quit, but for some beginners they may become overwhelmed and give up... which kinda sucks too.

If a person who had $2000 to spend on a camera came up to me and asked me to recommend a good beginners camera to them, I don't think I would necessarily recommend the GH5, hell I'd probably recommend an 80D or a D5500 or a G85 if they like that Panasonic look.

For $2000.00 I think I would buy a used Canon C100 with the DPAF in it to be honest. I don't really think we need 4k for the stuff the average person does on here. It's nice to have I guess, but it does not lead to any film look as far as I can see. Maybe down sampled to 1080p does, 4k eh, not so much..

And the C100 already down samples from 4k to 1080p automatically. So less work to do in post with it.

Maybe I'll even wait for their announcement on Cinegear. The GH5 seems like a nogo for film. But at least they seem to have the knowhow, lol.

Oh they Have the know how, The Varicam 35 is proof of that!!

    2 minutes ago, mercer said:

Obviously with SLog2 you need to but if you didn't there would be too much noise in the shadows, which is probably why Panny has left noise reduction in the pipeline. Even with all the features, the GH5 is still a high end consumer camera created to give enthusiasts a reason to buy a 4K TV.

And hopefully a Panasonic 4k TV!

It's fine when shooting RAW, but LOG shouldn't be overexposed. ;)

Panasonic could be exactly there, the GH5 does a wonderful job debayering and downscaling to 4k, it's almost perfect. But then they apply this ugly sharpening at the end...
Why can't they just give us a choice? :(

Well I think Panasonic logically knows that the GH series cameras are more for Amateur, Hobbyist users, so I think they Bake it in on purpose to make it look a bit better than it really is. Sort of what Olympus does with their photo colors, and even with their video now on the EM1 mkII.

Both the GH4 and as it seems the GH5 as well have a serious yellow saturation problem (and red clipping), so be careful while ETTR.

Yeah Yellow is not a happy thing on Panasonic cameras. There is way too much of it on average.
