Yes this is my dilemma, would be pretty frustrating spending £4200 and not being able to trust the higher quality modes, don't see the point. If you're only shooting very short sequences fair enough but not for me

right now the camera is useless for most of us, we can not trust to do anything important with it, and price is too high for all its limitations, once the camera is out there, and we get good reviews we could find a way to use it, if we can run all day with an external recorder, well, that's interesting, not ideal, but much better, if we use a small vent in a cage could also work, we really don't know yet, with the current information it is clearly a NO NO, but real world test and DIY solutions could change our initial decision.

I just wish that they would offer this type of sensor in a lower resolution, on a less expensive and more versatile camera body.

totally agree, I hope BM make sense and provide a tool with this new sensor to the indie/solo shooter which is and has been its major customer market.

Same boat as you without the endless posts about the actual release. 🤣🤣

haha, I know is better stay in silence, but really, when you are waiting for a pocket, the rumors say a new pocket, and a brick for medium size companies is released, I have to say something!, it is really frustrating that BM is now trying to compite with RED instead of providing a better tool for the indie/solo shooter who make this company to grow in the camera market.

You've literally been spending the last day capping on it and bashing it, while arguing with people that are interested in it. That's not the behavior of someone that couldn't care less. Move on dude.

all people who is talking and taking are not going to buy it, it is just talk, maybe two o three guys here have the money to afford it.

Which will then push down UMP G1 prices 😉

Which will then push down UM4.6K prices! Yay, finally I can afford one.

So yes, everyone please go buy a UMP 12K ASAP!

an UM4.6K ending in 4 hours on eBay now around $2K, and most probably will end below $2.5K. looks like a good price!

Solid IBIS. No overheating experienced at 4k 24p (shot over an hour). 30 minutes for 4k60p before overheating.

Great, overheating has not so much impact in Canada, let's wait for the review in Miami.

Anyway, probably with some indie ice pack solution will be posible to get better time recordings in hot weather.

The R6 performance looks really good, HD 120fps looks nice, 4k60p and IBIS look fantastic. The R5 that shot the Dpreview video looks really good too.

    Chris

if we find a DIY solution for hot weather the camera will be really good!

Above is a link of @John Brawley talking about how useful IBIS or PDAF are on the E-M1 III, and how HE LOVED working with it.

He said he "got shots with the E-M1 III that he couldn't get with a different style of camera" (cine rig)

It really concerns me how people here is so fascinated with this new camera from Blackmagic which they are never going to buy because of they do not have the money, it is a waste of time, this camera is for a crew, yes, we will have some crazy guy going SOLO with this camera, but the performance will never be close to what a crew could achieve. What jumped Blackmagic to the eyes of the people was the development of cameras which are affordable for the indie/student shooter, medium and big productions will never switch to Blackmagic because of the reliability of their cameras, Blackmagic has an history, their cameras can work well, or bad, you never know, nobody in a big job is ever going to risk a day of shooting using the less reliable camera in the market, that's the reason Alexas dominate the market, and in second place we have RED. The target for this camera clearly is medium size productions, but I do not see it eaten a big portion of the market, since there are already other very good options out there. So guys, really, don't waste your time, you are not going to buy this camera, never, you will wait for the new pocket 8K or whatever come next.

I had the first Ursa Mini 4.6k and though it was a really good image. Blackmagic reliability was super poor. First one had the magenta issue, then they sent me new one after a friend got me chance to directly talk to Grant Petty at Cine Gear Los Angeles and they sent me a new one. Got the new one and less than year completely died on a shoot and was barely used. Sent me a third one and to deal with the IR, Moire and aliasing issues that plagued it had to buy a special third party sensor filter. By that time I gave up and saved up enough for a RED Dragon X then upgraded it to a Gemini and has been a solid work horse. I also passed over the pocket 4ks for the GH5s for smaller projects because they are not plagued with reliability issues. As much as I loved the first Ursa look and use Da Vinci resolve constantly I just can't ever go back after being burned on the Ursa Mini.

So the 12k is impressive tech and hope one day they can be reliable cameras because I did love the image coming from them Blackmagic. I wouldn't not mind paying more for there cameras if there quality control was reliable. I want them to be hire end solid cameras.

But I fear from their history the 12k will be pushed out way to fast and be another few years of issues by then the next thing will be announced and the business model continues.

Also lets not forget they promised global shutter on the Ursa Mini 4.6k and took preorders and then when they arrived the Global shutter mode was a lie and was taken away, HDMI out was taken away, and also accelerometers for VFX was no where to be seen.  I bet what they announced today some of the feature will disappear. Like 12k 60p and 8K 110 fps.  Or even 12k. They might be 12k sensor sampled to 8k or 6k.

Waw, real life experience is gold before any buying decision, a Komodo if it is reliable like the other RED's, with a decent autofocus, in a small package for run and gun unnoticed on the streets looks much much better to me.

Yes for the regular black, but the stormtrooper is 7 then cfast cards (certified approved) and then the tax. Also people are going to buy other parts to build a proper rig, which the average comes to over a G.

While the BM comes with their “award winning” shoulder style design and camcorder body ideal for hand held work.

With the order I’m doing for the Komodo it comes out to the same price as the BM12K with taxes.

well, tax also apply for Blackmagic (so higher price, higher tax) and if you are in the US just order it from B&H and tax is cero. Usually people will have a rig where to mount the Komodo, or can get a second hand on eBay for cheap, a dedicated cage looks fine but I doubt will be needed, and I am sure a lot of people will use it as their A cam, if the autofocus is near DPAF will be my A cam, the mount is RF, so we will have ND filters with the adapter to EF, it really does looks good in paper, let's see how it is in reality, could be another disaster like the new canons with the limitation to be used in the arctic, but certainly you can built it for a lot less than $10K, and most probably there will be cheaper Cfast that will work on it ether, also the Komodo will be perfect to shoot on the stress unnoticed, something imposible with a C200, C300 and this Blackmagic, that's the main reason I have not get a C200 yet. Still many things to be seeing in real life for the Komodo, but if RED do it right, I don't see where Blackmagic can eat their market, even in commercials, if the customer is paying a big check he is expecting to see an Arri or a RED on set, not a Blackmagic.

I’m a prospective StormTrooper buyer and to say  that this announcement doesn’t throw a kink or doesn’t spill over into RED’s Komodo market is probably a mistake. Yes I agree with the Komodo being a perfect B/C cam and a entryway into RED, but with  $2k more you have a future proof (5-6 years) of high quality A cam capability! I’m quite sure there are plenty Komodo line standers thinking about investing into this ecosystem.

my understanding is that Komodo will be around $6K, which is a lot less than the new Blackmagic, where did you get that the final price is $8K?

  11. 1 hour ago, Video Hummus said:

$10K for this? The Red Komodo is not looking so tasty anymore for the people in that market.

I honestly doubt the new Blackmagic is going to damage Red Komodo market, the new RED has the most compressed codec in the market, so less store needed meaning less money in disks, also will have autofocus (if it is close to DPAF it is a winner), and in a smaller package, so I can use it in gimbals, drones, etc, it is going to be the perfect B or C camera for big productions, and many people also would use it to jump into RED train.

After canon R's overheating disaster I am now waiting for the Komodo presentation, and the new Sony of course, anyway, the niche for this Blackmagic camera is going to be very specific, and clearly 99% of the people in this forum is not going to invest on it.

  12. certainly Blackmagic is now interested in other segment of the market, we were all expecting a new FF pocket, and we got this white elephant, strange, very strange indeed.

He left Canon. Fired for the overheating situation.

why the new canons doesn't look so bad after this morning?, a trick of the mind maybe.

I said it in the other thread which is now getting a bit fractious but I think they're going for RED's market

I read you comment and most probably you are right, but RED's cameras have an incredible codec that use so less physical space that is hard to believe anyone will migrate from RED to Blackmagic, also soon we will have the new 6K RED, with autofocus, in a small package, and for less money, I think Blackmagic will not be able to catch that market.

Last comment, I’m not mad I just want to make a point:

Criticizing fellow creatives is rude, no matter what. I don’t care what you do for a living, it puts food on your table and provides for you and those you care about.

Weddings? Great, pay them bills. It’s better than most 9 to 5s and requires a lot of skill.

YouTube shill? Fine, pay them bills. It’s on us, the consumer, to do our own research and make the right buying decisions.

What I don’t like is when someone mocks someone else for the work they do. It shows a lack of big picture awareness. Especially in 2020 man, everyone is scrambling.

fair enough, I am sorry I said what I said, I was just reacting and I should have reacted better, there is no job that is not a good job, specially in today's market, and in the mess we will have after covid19, anyway, a direct offense is also not good man.

You must understand that this forum is to discuss cameras, you should not take it personally, your attacks are on people, not on arguments.

I was talking about the camera, then I was offended with the clown word two times, and I reacted and said the same word, if you read the comments you will see I didn't say anything to this guy until he call me clown.

    STOCK FOOTAGE SHOOTERS!!!

Ring any bells? You offended before I responded to you...clowny. Don't mock what you don't understand.

I said that about the camera, that is the perfect camera for that purpose, was not directed to you, you then call me clown, that was a direct offense. You did it first.

The objective of the forum is to contribute opinions, knowledge, for a healthy discussion, however, hijodeibn, it is dragging it to the disqualifications. I think we should ignore it and continue with the appreciations regarding the 12k camera.

this guy call me clown two times before, if you read previous comments you will see it.

Okay now we know you're trolling. Enough.

I am not trolling, this guy call me Clown before, just read the previous comments, do not expect I will not react if somebody call me clown two times before.

and I just answered him with the same offense, I did not scale it.
