  1. DPing a cyc wall music video this weekend and will not have excess time to play with the 4.6k before then. We have two 256gb cards and will be able to dump footage while shooting on the other. That being said I'm trying to figure out the proper codec for the day without having to stop while we dump. We're planning on a 12 hour shoot with lunch. I'm pretty sure that throws RAW out the window but I haven't been able to find much info breaking down the differences in prores flavors. Can anyone break down the different record times for each prores flavor on a card that size?

    Thanks!

    Love the look of this!

I'd love to grade something like this, but unfortunately it never snows where I live! Great work!

Thanks man! When I get a little time I'd be happy to send over the footage if you want to play with it.

  3. I think you're right it will most likely sit at that price for awhile. Easily one of the best 1080 images out there! In act I had a potential client reach out recently who couldn't believe what he saw was shot on D750. And he owns an Alexa.

I love the colors coming off that d750 ! Well done sir

Thanks man! Nikon colors plus Film Convert make it shine.

It looks great. Good job. I have been so tempted to hit buy on a D750, but I just want to wait and see what gets released at CES first.

I think that's a smart move. Either way you're in a good position because even if nothing comes out you can there then D750 at it's current price is a great deal.

To all those using Nikon..whos using a flat/nikon flat profile or are you guys just using standard/vivid profiles? I tend to shoot on Standard but sometimes I'll mess around with Vivid or Portrait which I find in combination with various fluorescent light WB settings can help when filming in mixed light to get a good out of camera picture. I do mess around with Flaat 11 and Cineflat but TBH unless I'm shooting outdoors or with plenty of light I don't mess around too much with Flat profiles. I shoot on a d5300 which did away with the fpn from the sensor (D5200 big issue) but doesn't have the nikon flat profile.

For me I always shoot flat on the D750 but it's a different camera. Wether I'm doing something narrative or shooting a wedding The DR and gradeability on that camera with the flat profile works well with my work workflow so haven't paid much attention to the other profiles. I'd love to see what you're getting out of that guy.

  5. For now day for night is going to be out of the question because we have some long shoots and if we move them to the day were going to be getting some sweaty talent with the hot summer weather. LEDs seems to be the best option but I may need to pick up a Pixapro Mk II and or some other affordable LED optinons to go with the aputure.

  6. I have a night shoot that is located in a corn field maze and just found out Northern California has a law against generators in this area. Any thoughts on how to get by with my Arri 1ks?

I have the Aputure Amarans H672s set. But that wont be enough for a wide shot with about 8 subjects in frame. Any ideas on how to get around that. Would like to avoid buying more lights at the moment or pick up some Light Storms.

    thank you @August McCue !

+15 mbl , -4 saturation, -3 contrast (NEVER drop the contrast lower than the saturation), -10 sharpness (slightly sharpened in post) and 0-255 luma range.

lens used was the Contax Zeiss 50mm f1.4 AEJ

Are you still using film convert for the grade or are you keeping the grade more minimal since changing to normal gamma?

Have you tried using a C100ii with an external recorder? I imagine that Prores HQ and that camera sensor would create fantastic images.

Yeah man, I was really loving the the dailies that I was seeing. Can't wait to get into grading them. I wish the mark ii was cheaper but having a NX1 for slow mo I think I could be fine with a C100.

  10. If you're fine without 4k and RAW the c100 is a great camera. Shot my first feature film on the mark ii and l freaking loved it. I think it's one of the only cameras that can cross over between the 2 different kind of shooting you do in that range. Still getting a professional camera that can output good color externally. I'm in the same boat man thats what I'v been leaning toward myself recently.

A Panasonic rep at the recent Cinegear insisted to me that the G7 HDMI output was 8 bit, 4:2:0.  However, the Ninja Assassin probably records that signal at 10 bit, 4:2:2 Prores.

So it's not true 10 bit, 4:2:2 Right? Or am I missing something? I'v read that what you out put is all you can get so nothing will be enhanced by a recorder. I would LOVE to be wrong here btw.

C100 Mark II and forget all of the other lower cost photo cameras.......

It's a professional known tool where Canon has done all of the marketing for you. Sure an NX1 and GH4 (similar) can put out a nice image for the price, but realistically especially when forming a business you should definitely be as good or better than the current industry in gear, production, cost, total package, etc.

Also owning a C100 will allow you to do other more professional jobs by marketing to an entire different set of clientele. Commercials, Documentaries and of course like you mentioned Weddings.

I think at that price I'd be leaning toward a URSA 4.6k since the Mark II but I get what you're saying!

Here's my question. Do you think owning a camera like that will really open you up to getting more clients? I love the thought of that and it makes some sense but I live in LA and most people I know get brought on and just rent what they need. I'm building to that point myself but I know of a cinematographer who seems to be working a ton and he said he's done buying cameras and just renting whatever he needs per shoot. So my question is are there commercial shoots that are looking for a DP with a camera? And would that spark more work?

I mean I LOVE the idea of buying the camera I want and that also benefiting my business it's win win. But also I don't want to blow money when it's not going to spark much business.

I think the Personal-View links let you buy cameras that specifically have their record limits removed.

The GX85 also lacks the 30-minute limit.

I'v never heard of Personal View. This is Interesting! Do they use a hack like magic lantern?

  13. Yeah man, I agree. Sounds exactly like what I'v been doing just got some new lights and grip gear myself. I really didn't want to spend money on the camera thats why I posted this to try and find a decent option for those kinda gigs but nothing more and the GH3 maybe a 4 sounds like a great option for what I need. I am at the point where I just want to rent out for projects that I need better cameras for. That is until I can save up for a Ursa 4.6k!

  14. Great suggestions, thanks!

Yeah I was thinking if I spend the extra money on a C100 I could use it for film work but I'm not sure yet if I like the image more than my NX1. Besides it's dynamic range and low light. That Sony is interesting but it hurts me to spend that kinda money on something that I wouldnt really use for narrative work which is my real passion.
