EXACTLY! 4k on Youtube looks very close the the original footage before youtube compression. So 1080 uploaded in 4k is a huge benefit. For instance. If you watch my film above in 1080 the film grain/noise looks like blocky moving pixels and ruins the film look and feel, but in 4k mode it looks like fine grain and doesn't distract.

from 0:00 to 1:34 is the T3i, and 1:40 to 13:59 is the Pocket, then it goes back to the t3i from 14:00 until 17:30.
I graded all the pocket cinema camera footage with Neumann luts "The Halfling profile"
As a final render I upscaled everything to 4k and uploaded to youtube. So for best viewing results 4k is your best bet as it does benefit quite a bit with youtube compression.

There's been many films shot on an 8 bit 420 codec that ended up looking fantastic on the big screen! Take Act Of Valor, or Like Crazy for example! Both features shot on canon dslr. Not to mention a lot of scenes in whiplash, and the avengers were shot on dslrs. I honestly think 8bit 420 is perfectly fine if you don't plan on grading too much.

I've used both a c100 and an nx1. I'll just say that to me personally the dynamic rand is definitely close! I honestly didn't see that much of a difference at all in Dr on the nx1. I'll also add that the nx1 is a great camera that'd I'd personally choose to shoot on over a c100 or c300 at this point.

Nx1's highlights are much much better! Only because of the nice pleasing roll off When actually optimizing it for maximum DR.

Micah Mahaffey reacted to Glenn Thomas in How to cure banding in DSLR footage (and GH4 4K holds the key...)
Yeah, I've been doing this for years. Probably as far back as 2006 for videos I was using a program called Photozoom to upres DV videos to 1080P. It works. Although I normally don't need to do it. Editing 32bit in Sony Vegas usually takes care of any banding. Otherwise I use Neat Video noise reduction followed by either film grain or the Add Noise plugin in Sony Vegas set to 0.025.

A chroma blur plugin can sometimes help too.

I also noticed the mention of Premiere CC in this article. I installed that last night for some videos I have to edit with a client's CC license. OMG, Premiere has to be the most frustratingly awkward, fiddly and annoying software out there! Having struggled with it nearly all day today, I honestly don't understand how anyone would have the patience to do any kind of professional work with that program. Compared to Sony Vegas, Premiere CC is a total nightmare to edit with. I gave up after one video edit which took me all day, and then did the following one in Vegas in less than an hour. I'd figured how to use Premiere, but the user interface and extreme lack of functionality drove me nuts. If my client wants me to edit any more videos in Premiere, it's not gonna happen. Apologies for the rant...

There's barely any aliasing or moire at all. Just convert the clips to 1080p or 720p to match your display then judge the amount of aliasing or moire. From my experience there's is none!

NX1! Definitely NX1! If you don't care about transcododing the h.265 (which doesn't take that long) then there is basically no con to getting the NX1! I'm shocked with how pleasing/amazing the image quality is. The image to me feels like a Canon C500 in 4k Or a Red Epic! It's incredible!

Micah Mahaffey got a reaction from Marco Tecno in Samsung NX1 - $1500 4K Cinema Camera! Test!
I honestly think DSLRS are great for films. Look at the season 6 finale of House! It was shot on a 5d and looks incredible!! Same with Act Of Valor!! That was a bug budget Hollywood movie shot 90% on 5d's. If a Canon 7D can be used to make features like "Like Crazy" then an NX1 should be perfectly usable at 4k! Hollywood movies use expensive cameras because they are better in different ways. It's going to be much easier to make an arri Alexa look like a movie than it will for a NX1 so Hollywood of course will use the best there is. But if you know what you're doing the NX1 can be used as a story telling tool just as much as a red can. It'll take more work but for the price I wouldn't mind working a bit harder.

I would just like to add that this camera is absolutely amazing!
I filmed this whole video on the Rokinon 24mm f1.4 Canon mount with the Fotasy EF to NX adapter.
I graded the clips with Magic Bullet looks within Sony Vegas Pro 13.

I would like to note all the color banding your seeing in this test is caused by turning the in camera noise reduction all the way up and then compressing it in conversion. So this is a worste case scenario.

You should suggest samsung adds a 2.5k mode with the options of 60fps, 30fps, and 24 fps to the NX1 and also a 1:1 crop mode like on the nx500. Both those options would help with rolling shutter and having more detailed 60fps would come in handy as well!

I'd just get the NX1. It ultimately comes down to what you need and if what you need is good color/skin tones then the NX1 is the camera you'll want. If you need extreme low light the the A7s is for you. So if you can pass on the low light then the NX1 is definitely a great replacement. Plus you get internal 4k!
