    Nice! No oversharpening artifacts visible!
What were your settings in camera and did you add slight blur afterwards (filmconvert)?

Thanks! Standard profile with contrast -2, Sharpness -4 and Noise Reduction -3. No blur but added Impulz film grain which softens the image a bit.

There are obviously countless distinct paid gigs. Where AF can be much more useful than only MF, focus pulling and so on. Not even less PRO-like because of that. A wedding shooter, as for instance, is as much professional as a feature film focus puller. Well, if both paid ; )

The point is the fact GH5 has no bad AF.

Imagine a pretty woman with a difficult temper. My best second half, for example. Speaking literally : )

I won't dismiss her because the situation requires much much harder work from me... ;-)

I bet handling the GH5 AF system will be easier, after all :-D

Agree to disagree about the GH5 autofocus then :) But in the end, what do i know? I take others words for it since i don't use it myself. Panasonic released a statement saying they're working on improving the autofocus so i might give it a go in the future.

Anyways, my car can be unable to beat a Ferrari, but if it takes me to wherever the Ferrari or any other takes me, I can still drive it without much further complaints.

No GH5 here yet, but seems pretty enough this AF performance or tap to focus workaround (without mention the focus pulling feature!):

And please don't tell me touchscreen focus is not a valid solution because it is perhaps the best AF way to ever select... AF.

In any camera for any setup. Our brain is surely brighter to handle the job than a machine. Period.

Here's another example that I am not alone on this one:

"tap to focus workaround" and "focus pulling feature" is not the same as reliable CAF. I'm not saying touchscreen autofocus is a bad thing, but for every shot every time? Come on man... What about gimbal and steadicam shots, are you going to press the screen a few times every second?

We have different views on what would be acceptable performance on a paid gig, that's all.

Have you double checked that LUT monitoring is actually selected in the menu? It sounds like you're not getting the effect of the LUT and looking at pure V-Log

Menu > Creative Video > V-LogL View Assist > Lut Monitor Display > ON

Yes, the LUT monitoring is definitely on. Pure V-Log looks very flat as it should. Panasonics built in LUT looks a bit washed out, my custom lut looks a bit more contrasty but no where near what i get when i apply the same custom LUT to V-Log footage in premiere/resolve.

That's what i'm having trouble grasping, why my LUT doesn't give the same look on the GH5 display/evf as it does in Premiere/Resolve. On the exact same footage.

This last paragraph recalls this video here (and that meaningful statement pronounced on minute 1:27):

What about to take that thing of settings seriously?

I doubt he may find the same outcome going with sharpness dialed at the lowest end of the range, as for instance.

Actually, taking appearances seriously instead (see minute 1:22 for example and those ugly shadows in the wall as merely from bad lighting) can be an illusive bitch to the eyes BTW...

There should surely be sweet spots for AF usage, as well.

The signs are out there: it is just the way to follow them. Straight out of the box? Hard to find their miracles.

There's only so much fiddling with settings can achieve if the tech isn't quite there in the first place. There's a ton of videos and posts where people explore the autofucus settings of the GH5 and everyone pretty much comes to the same conclusion. Sure, there's a sweetspot for AF usage but at that sweetspot the autofocus is still no way near the competition.

I really like the GH5 but if i ever needed good reliable AF on a paid job where retakes might not be possible i would leave the GH5 at home.

I believe what you're looking at is simply the greater dynamic range of the vlog compressed onto the visible range of the led monitor. Instead of the blacks being crushed and the highlights being blown out, they are fully visible. This, counterintuitively, reduces the subjective contrast. The EVF doesn't have this effect as much I think.

There's something else going on rather than better dynamic range. One would think that a lut would give the same results on the monitor as it gives in premire/resolve. Tried the EVF and same issue there.

Will investigate this further and update the thread with my findings.

So, now that the GH5 has been out for over a month, what is the verdict from the early adopters? I have heard so many mixed reviews and have seen a lot of videos from people saying they are returning their GH5, I am curious to know from the EOS HD community. BH has even had a half dozen used GH5s for sale and they are still selling it for preorder? It's actually rather strange that one of the biggest camera stores in the world hasn't gotten any GH5s in stock, but that's neither here nor there.

Part of me wants to buy one and the other part says... meh ML Raw looks way better. If the GH5 was selling for $1500 or $1600, I probably would buy one, but at $2000... I'm not so sure, even though I have an upcoming short that it would be perfect for.

People had way to high expectations about this camera, not only because the hype Panasonic started but because of rumor sites and potential buyers upping the hype.

10bit 422 is great but it's not some magical feature that will make everything you shoot look like Alexa footage. Messing up on 10 bit will hurt almost as much as messing up on 8 bit. Future 400 Mbps update not considered.

Judging the camera for what it is, my first impressions are great. Im sure it's going to be a real workhorse just like the GH4 is.

Edit. Forgot to mention something about the autofocus. Personally I don't use it but sure, it would have been nice to have. If you need world class leading autofocus during video recording then look elsewhere. Panasonic might fix it with firmware, or not.

Maybe check out page 238 of the manual - settings to change brightness and contrast of LCD and/or viewfinder.

Thank you for the suggestion but i have no problem with the contrast of the LCD. If i'm taking photos or using other profiles than V-LOG with LUT monitoring the contrast and brightness of the LCD is great.

  9. So first impressions of the GH5 are great but there's one thing that bugs me about V-LOG L shooting and it's the LUT monitoring. All the LUTs I've tried gives me this washed out image on the GH5 screen, even the one that's built in. I've even tried making my own and while they work great when applied to the footage in premiere, they give me that washed out look on the GH5 screen.

I've talked about this with a friend that's experiencing the exact same problem.

Or am i getting this totally wrong? Isn't a Log to 709 LUT supposed to give me a the same look on the GH5 monitor as it would give me applying it in Premiere?

What I'm really concerned about is, that nothing I've seen from the GH5 looks nearly as organic as what I'm able to achieve with internal 8 Bit recorded V-Log using the GH4.

I mean, it almost looks like a downgrade, really cleanic, oversharpened, processed. Is it really that hard to produce cinematic pictures using the GH5?

Hasn't this been the case of every camera release?

People get their hopes up when it's announced -> people get disappointed when they see pre production samples by a tiny group of people -> People get excited once again when the masses get the hold of the camera.

I'm sure you can get your GH4 footage to look non organic, over sharpened and over processed.

  11. Thanks to all of you for some great suggestions!

Should have mentioned this in the beginning but there's a project coming up where nothing else than image really matters, hence the ignore rest comment. Controlled environment, good lighting, everything is stationary except those in front of  the camera. 1-3 minute shoot, edit, send to client, repeat.

  12. Will probably end up buying the GH5 but still, would be nice to know your thoughts on this.

If we ignore size, audio, release date, ergonomics, mount, sensor size and everything except the image coming out of the camera. What, ready to shoot minus lens, camera for around $3000 (new or used) will give the best image according to you?
