Ty Harper got a reaction from Django in Canon EOS R5C
Posting in this thread bcuz I doubt it's been mentioned before and I honestly misjudged the usefulness of this new feature. Canon added the teleconverter feature to the R5C last year and while initial reviews/tests concluded that the feature was really only good to 1.5x mag with anything past that (2x, 2.5x, 3x) being deemed not as good - it has been flagged by several R5C users that those conclusions were not accurate. In fact (and I can confirm with my own tests) that the R5C's TC feature produces very good results across the entire magnification range. What matters is that you are exposing properly but also maaybe giving it a bit more light than usual.
So now my trusty Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 EF-S has new life with a focal range of 27mm - 264mm with the 3x footage being about as great as the widest end.
Anyways, just one more reason this cam continues to be a great hybrid option.

It's definitely improved for very short takes. While I didn't watch the whole thing, the bits I skipped around to see were all very short clips. Anyplace with letters was also a give-away (the wording on the truck). I also wonder how many "takes" they had to do of each clip to get one that looked good and where the physics were mostly realistic. I saw a few clips that seemed in the "weird physics" space - that continues to be a major weakness of AI-generated video.
But the main thing that could still slow down the enshittification of everything through AI is that AI-generated material is still not able to be copyrighted - at least not in the US. How long that lasts before the shitheads in Congress/Senate/Presidency "fix" it? Unknown.

The voiceover was real.
This is the card at the end of the video.
Well, there’s the rub.
Whatever it was trained on was certainly very real.
Looking at this frame, I’m pretty sure if you went through enough of PotatoJet’s YouTube content you’d find the ,shall we say, “inspiration” for it.

Ty Harper reacted to EduPortas in Rising R7 mechanical shutter issues?
Cost-cutting had to come somewhere with Canon MILCs.
It's pretty well-known that Canon DSLRs from the 7D upward are practically indistructable (maybe 6D is the exception but I've never heard a 6D failing in the shutter mechanism).
Ths also brings up a good point: 7D, 5D and of course 1D are heavy cameras. That's because the shutter mechanisms on these models are built tougher than most other cameras, and of course the bodies are mainly magnisium alloy. You can read about it here:
https://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-7d-mark-ii/canon-7d-mark-iiA.HTM
So maybe there are still good reasons to own a 7D or 7DM2 (I re-bought a 7DM2 just a few months ago. Can't subsitute everything with Canon MILCs. At least not with my R8).

I wonder does shutter close when shut down contribute to this issue, I know on Sony people have been recommending not to close shutter when shut down to keep their life longer.
I myself mostly use the R7 for video so it's not like I take photos a lot, even if I do take photos it is mostly electronic shutter anyway.

This is wired I used exactly the same d-tap adapter for 2 years with my R5c and never had this 90 second issue, is just immediate. I use it with FXLION Nano One batteries.
Never the less Canon should do an official dtap dummy batter that mimics the EP-E6P.
I now moved to two R5II but if I would still be having a R5c I would simply move to EP-E6P and for really long stuff use the USB-C.
PS: it is great that Canon made the R5c work with the new battery it really removes the biggest issue I had with the camera.

Haven't seen any tests yet nor have I had time to update to this latest FW myself, but early comments from those who have are suggesting that the updates to the R5C's DIS (#7 below) are really good. If true it would be a fantastic addition to an already amazing cam, imo.
"1. Enables functions to be used without limitation in conjunction with the new Battery Pack LP-E6P. This makes it possible to shoot 59.94P with RAW LT.
2. Enables the display of the digital tele-converter icon on [Main Recording Displays] of [DISP Level 2].
3. Adds the ability to apply Full-Screen display to an external display according to OSD Output setting when using [Peripheral Border Display].
4. Adds function [Tracking by Touch priority] for starting tracking by touching the LCD.
5. Enables the AF Frame and Focus Guide to be moved by dragging.
6. Adds [Protect Images] and [Rating] during FTP Transfer. (Photo Mode)
7. Adds the [Motion Vector For Digital IS] menu option. Default [Disable]*
* [Disable]: Prevents a phenomenon that may cause the image to shake along with the subject when recording a subject (such as a person or an animal) with a large amount movement.
8. Changes the menu option name of [PTP Connection/GP-E2] in [USB Mode] in [System Setup] to [Canon App(s)/GP-E2]. For Android devices, please select [Canon App(s)/GP-E2].
9. Adds support for the RF-Mount Cinema Lens: CN7x17 KAS T/R1

Ty Harper reacted to Andrew Reid in Weighing the pros and cons EOS R5 vs R5 C - I think I am going for basic bitch R5
EOS R5 pros:
Battery takes less of a hammering in video mode Better AF in video mode Choice of pixel binning mode available in 4K (more power and heat economical in this mode vs HQ) Cheaper second hand by about 800 euros Thinner, no fan or vent IBIS More commonly available so easier to find All the same image quality basically as the Cinema EOS version Lots of firmware updates Overheating no longer a big thing (and was partially fake to begin with - thanks Canon!) You can still use digital IS + Optical IS + at same time turn off IBIS to help with warping (I think) EOS R5-C Pros:
Looks sexier 8K goes up to 60p RAW with new battery Digital IS + Optical IS avoids warping effect of IBIS Longer continuous run times in top quality modes for interviews, events, etc. 4K/120p is a bit less noisy (I thought the 4K/120p was oversampled from 8K but appears it is same pixel binned quality as basic bitch R5) Sensor & processor runs cooler Lots of fancy video features that I never use Video menus Wider range of codec options Proper slow & quick modes EOS R5-C however has some cons:
The delay in switching modes, even though it's been reduced Missing IBIS is a downer, especially not good for stills shooting I don't have much need for the extra fancy pro video features like waveform, etc. I prefer to look at what I'm shooting and not have so much crap on the display I don't need 8K/60p The battery doesn't last in video mode on the EOS R5 C, ideally needs external power solution and heavier rig So basic bitch R5 it is?

Ty Harper got a reaction from Davide DB in Canon EOS R5C
These are all pretty fair assessments - and of course we all have different pros/cons based on our shooting needs.
As someone who has been using the R5C for several years now, and now has two of them, I can say that the switching from video to pics is not that big of a deal after a FW update that reduced the switch over time to under 5 seconds. So if that practical difference of maaaybe 2 seconds (compared to an R5 or other hybrid cams) is of absolute critical importance - compared to all the things you gain with the R5C's feature set - and if JPEG isn't enough, then yes, it isn't the cam for you. Also, if I'm not mistaken, you can be in 8K RAW video mode AND still shoot RAW pics. You don't have to extract stills from the video.
As far as image stab goes, I initially bought an R5 bcuz I thought I needed IBIS, and honestly, after about 6 months using both cams together, I didn't feel like the gains of the R5's IBIS were enough for me to keep it - so I sold it and got my second R5C. For my use cases the R5C's DIS in tandem with lens IS is perfect for my needs. And again, losing IBIS was offset by all the cot damn features you get with the R5C.
The only thing I miss with the R5 is the little extra compactness it gives you by not having a fan AND the fact that you cannot adjust the internal mics on the R5C, at all. These factors are why I'm currently considering picking up and R7/5/6 MKII for a passion project I'm shooting overseas next year. Bcuz the R5C's fan + the need to have a small shotgun mic for usable audio, means I'll stick out like a sore thumb way more if I bring it with me, altho that Sennheiser MKE 200 might low pro/compact enough for me to just stick with one of my R5C.
All that to say, the R5C feels to me like a final destination, future proof cam. And while I still need to decide what my C-Cam will be, I won't be surprised if I just make it another R5C and call it day.

Ty Harper got a reaction from ArashM in Canon EOS R5C
Absolutely! Although I see them as serving two slightly different hybrid users: the cinema/photo shooter and the all round video/photo shooter. On another note, if the R5C ends up being a one-off release, it will be Canon's unicorn cam when it comes to the sheer amount of features packed into its mirrorless styled body. Kind of the way the 1DC was a one-off with an image that made it kind of a unicorn amongst DSLRs.

Ty Harper got a reaction from Juank in Canon EOS R5C
With Canon's new C400 shipping with a brand new detachable USB-C based monitor, I've been musing on whether it might be compatible with the R5C with a firmware update, similar to what Canon did to make the C200's LM-V1 monitor compatible with the C300 MKII. As far as the technical side goes, it seems like both the R5C and C400 have the exact same USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port. Also, I did not know this but page 123 of the R5C's video manual seems to confirm that it can output a max 8K 30p resolution via its USB-C port. I also made a call to Canon USA tech support, and while the person could not confirm that the C400's monitor would be made compatible with the R5C, they did not outright deny that is was technically impossible. Now obviously I can't be sure the person I spoke to was a reliable source. I also think there might be a chance that while the R5C and the C400 have the same USB-C port, that the amount of power they can support might be different.
All that said, it seems like there is a chance that at least technically speaking the C400's monitor (along with its coveted touch screen AF features) could be compatible with the R5C, which imo would be a fantastic addition to its feature set. Particularly for gimbal use. I've included a pic of the C400 with its monitor attached to an RS3 Pro to demonstrate what I'm getting at! Anyways, it would be great if the more tech savvy amongsr use could do their own digging to see if this is indeed true. But either way it probably wouldn't hurt to nudge Canon so at the very least they know there is demand for such a firmware update from R5C and maybe even C70 owners (altho I'm not sure if the C70 has the same USB-C port).

Wow, so Matthew Allard over at Newsshooter is reporting that the Shinobi MKII will have a new FW update that allows it to do touch focus AF with the Canon R6 MKII (among other non-Canon cameras).
The R5C is not on the list yet, but this all seems promising.
Here's an excerpt from the original Atomos press release:
"At IBC, Atomos (Hall 11, D25) announces major new functionality for Shinobi II, the amazingly successful Photo | Video Monitor. Users get a world’s first: on-monitor touch auto focus and focus subject tracking, in both photo and video camera modes, and it’s a free update for all existing users. The first camera models to be supported are from Sony (A7 MkIV), Canon (R6 Mark II), Panasonic (S5 II) and Fujifilm (GFX100 II). Nikon is also now supported for photo and video modes, with auto focus and focus subject tracking to follow in future updates."
Sorry if this has already been posted but don't recall seeing it.

Ty Harper reacted to IronFilm in New Tascam FR-AV2 giving Zoom F3 competition?
True, I can think of lots of firmware updates the FR-AV2 could get but not so much the F3 could do.
Yes, as while the FR-AV2 is a nice two channel record, Tascam is totally AWOL in the world of prosumer or professional recorders for anything more than two channels.
Where is the Tascam DR701D mk2?
Where is the Tascam HS-P82 mk2?
Where is the Tascam DR680 mk3?
I hope the FR-AV2 is a hint that there will be a future FR-AV6 / FR-AV12 / etc in the future.

Ty Harper reacted to IronFilm in New Tascam FR-AV2 giving Zoom F3 competition?
I posted about this over a week ago! 🤣 😂 😆 As the specs got leaked a while ago.
But posted not to here, rather to a subreddit specifically for production sound:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ProductionSound/comments/1fl0rn9/new_tascam_frav2_is_coming_a_zoom_f3_killer/
I agree with the first post from @BTM_Pix, the fact that this is able to treat TC normally (rather than the hacked up weird way TC is done with the Zoom F3, although yes, the Zoom F3 is technically "timecode capable") means the Tascam is a better idea than the Zoom F3. (although I suspect the small $100 difference in RRP means that the average buyer who doesn't even know about will end up choosing the F3 instead 😕 However I suspect within 18 months we'll see the Tascam street price getting closer to the F3's RRP)
So true that many "Boom Ops" lack the necessary skills at the indie level. (in a way this is due to the extremely low value placed on the Sound Dept. Where they think the entire department could be done by just one person. And if we do get a 1st AS that it is basically a glorified PA position, not that their skill level has to be at the same level as a 1st AC or Gaffer.
Honestly even getting two people who can each properly boom one person at a time is often a tall ask. That they will get it in close enough, and on axis, and with no shadows, and with no reflections, and do all of this while this one person is moving. On an indie no / low budget shoot I feel lucky if I get even one Boom Op who is competent at all of that. If they can lav people up too, then I've hit gold.
Yup! That's why I just said "If they can lav people up too, then I've hit gold".
And is why in the vast majority of these scenarios I will have to lav them up myself.
But on bigger budget / professional film sets, where you have actually skilled people in your department, then it's the normal process for the AS (usually the 2nd AS) to be doing the lav-ing rather than the Sound Mixer.
For a long time I went hard wired. But eventually I felt the audio quality sacrifice of using Lectrosonics wireless on the boom was worth it due to the practical benefits.
If you've got a person dedicated for being the Mixer, not someone booming at the same time, then I don't think it's that hard for them to grasp basic gain staging.
Ohhhh.... where did you see this?
Wish the Tascam FR-AV2 would also let you record the 3.5mm stereo input as well as both XLR inputs. (currently it can only do one or the other, not all four inputs at once)
If the new Zoom F3 mk2 could do that and does TC sensibly (not only via BT!) and does 24bit 48KHz BWAV, then I think I've found myself my next backup / supplementary / compact recorder.
That's true, due to firmware updates for the OG F8 then it's almost identical to the latest F8n Pro.
