  1. Yes that is correct. I have a Ninja Blade and it will not work at all with the NX1 because there is no clean 1080p out of the camera. I really hope they add support for this in a future update, as 1080p is surprising great on the camera.

  2. Use Rocky Mountain Movie Converter! Set resolution to "same as source", select "h.264", set quality to "20", and select "fast convert". Your files will look great, be just as small as the h.265 clip, and run super nice in any editing software. You just aren't going to be able to push the grade like you can if you used prores. But it's a nice option I think. Pretty much on par with canon dslr compression.

I'm sorry but this is not true. They may be as small, but they will not hold up to any level of grading whatsoever.

  3. I curious about this as well. I had heard that the ninja star downconverts 4K automatically, but have seen no tests to confirm this feature. Hopefully someone can chime in and answer, because it would be a very useful feature to have. Though I also hope they offer clean 1080p out on the NX1 as well at some point.

  4. The blackmagic has a horrid screen (need to buy an EVF/Moniter), horrific audio inputs (external recorders), poor ergonomics (Shoulder rig needed for handheld)

He said his budget is $1500, you are not going to get a BMCC with the gear needed to use it in common situations for under $1500. GH2/3 is plenty of camera to start shooting on.

  5. I have posted these to other threads, but here is some testing I have done with the NX1.

Some Notes after filming for a bit and using it on productions.

ISO Limits: Each Resolution and framerate seems to have a limit that when you hit it the video quality skydives, these are what I have found so far.

    1080p

120 fps Mode is fantastic until you hit ISO 500, then it gets murky, then unusable past ISO 800

60p goes bad at ISO 800

30p & 24p are perfect till ISO 800, usable in 1250, 2000 only suitable for some documentary situations.

    DCI 4K

1250 is your limit, 2000 if your downscaling to 2K

    UHD

1600 is the peak, 3200 if your downscaling to 1080p

Want to do a technical test with steadily ramping the ISO values. Will post it here when it is complete.

  6. what a shame !

and don't tell me you have the same sad news for the 4K HDMI output
of such an hi-tech sensor (and camera).

Um, like the above said the cheapest 4K 10-Bit 4:4:4 Camera is the Chinese KineMINI that will run you ~$4500 for that ability (4K upgrade). Other than that your talking 15 grand or more.

On the topic at hand: really enjoy using PotPlayer to review my footage, plays back absolutely fine. VLC still hangs for me.

  7. What is the quality level of the RAW images you can extract back from their HEVC x265 compression?

10 bit depth and 4:4:4 chroma sampling would be perfect but I guess I have to be ready for
    a less desirable answer...

Yeah your gonna have to be, 8-bit 4:2:0. We are talking about a $1500 camera here not a RED.

    Gold :)

As to the gear thing, acquiring new gear give me less and less excuses to create bad content. I also just love tech. We are at the point every camera is so good you cannot blame the camera anymore. Right now I made a rule for myself that I cannot buy a new camera until I have a proper lighting kit, I hope I can hold myself to that.

It should be a rule for every camera owner, no buying the next camera until you at least earn the cost of your current camera back.

  9. The viewing screen not being a reflex groundglass anymore, there is no technical reason to keep it over the taking lens axis,

on the contrary it would be more ergonomic to move it to the left side (the Leica M side) also adopted by the Lumix compact mirrorless cameras.

Having used the sony A6000 with a setup like this I strongly disagree, it makes it awkward supporting and focusing large adapted glass because your left hand has to reach further to the right. Its the perfect setup for using light samsung lenses in AF mode, but filming with this setup is an inconvenience.

  10. Yeah I wish mirrorless cameras would support offering a linear focus mode for their fly by wire lenses.  I don't see why they don't, it encourages filmmakers to purchase their native lenses instead of adapting 3rd party glass.

  11. You want to have 180 shutter for the final framerate of your project.

For example footatge recorded at 50p 1/50 will look fine when converted to 25fps, but create a blurry unnatural motion effect at 50 fps. Inversely recording at 1/100 while shooting 50p, if you convert that to 25p it will look overly sharp and jittery. Recording 50p for a 25p project also halves your effective bitrate.

I know it's nice to have options in post, but in this case the trade offs are most likely not worth it for you.

  12. Ok let me chime in.  This is what I would like to see in the updates to come.

    1) I think banding is an issue. When pushed a little in post, banding shows its ugly face. I stopped shooting too flat so I don't have to push contrast so much in post.

    2) Jello is an issue. Perhaps a 2k mode could help.

    3) Moire and aliasing often visible. Especially when 4K is downscaled to HD

    4) The recorded sound is really bad due to the auto gain. We need to be able to turn auto gain off. This is important. As for now the sound is hardly usable.

    5) I would like to be able to stay in video standby mode at all times.

    6) When playing back a clip, the camera "forgets" your latest settings (goes back to the saved settings). This is annoying.

Besides these issues I really love this camera :)

    1) Agree, I think to further prevent this the simplest solution is to up the bitrate. Maybe a double 150mb/s mode (Ultra Pro) that has a warning when you turn it on that if you don't have a fast enough card you will get dropped frames.

    2) yup

    3) This is the fault of the software your using, not the camera. The 4K image is flawless in terms in detail.

    4) Significantly agree. I've been using the camera for doc work and recording audio externally instead of in the camera.

    5) I agree, when you stop recording it should stay in movie standby mode.

    6) I have not encountered this issue. Is it repeatable in your camera? What settings does it reset?
