  1. Yeah hanging that lens onto the end of the Canon 40mm pancake seems like a bad idea :)

Great work as always from this company though, always glad to see a company focus on anamorphics that don't kill the budget. Actually sad to hear the lens works better with modern glass, prefer old metal lenses for use with the anamorphot.

  2. I have used the nikonhacker bitrate hacks on my D800 and they have been very stable for me. I think you should be safe in installing the hack and using that for video recording for the camera.

I shot this with the hacked D800.

As for the Nikon cameras you should use. I have used both the D7000 and D800.. The best option from what I have seen is the D5200 & D5300, great image quality in those cams and better framerate and compression compared to older nikons.

  3. I think you can shoot fully manual on the D3100. Set it to M-mode on the Top dial, turn your lens to Manual focusing, flick the live view trigger around the record button and you should be good to go. Only thing I don't know is if it has any limitations in terms of aperture changes and ISO adjustment during recording.

  4. Great footage as usual Brother! Her hair just pops out of the screen and that waterfall shot is spectacular.

I, like you, have just fallen in love with this camera. The look of the image that it produces and the way it handles just plain works for me.

  5. Honestly, Super 35. Full Frame is great, but only if I see the lens stopped down a little. I don't like the long lens shallow depth of field look unless done for a specific purpose. 35 and 40mm Anamorphics.

Loved your example shot with the MOVI, great camera work using it in creative ways. Enjoy the effect of it seeming like a tripod shot and then suddenly having movement.

  6. Impressive detail. You gave quite a lot of depth through grading. Which settings did you apply? Anyway it's nice to see what can be done with a video that's 'just' 8bit.

Gorilla Grain + Speedgrade Fuji ETERNIA LUT+ very slight magenta and white balance adjustment.

  7. Personal Settings:

Gamma DR, Contrast -6, Sat +1, Sharpness -8, Gamma +11. Also for shooting I think it's best if you slightly underexpose the image, but that is personal taste.

Also don't discount the 1080p mode if you need to cover fast action, it's plenty sharp and the RS is amazing in that mode.

  8. Great suggestions from everyone!

I would very much like to see them remove the crazy "hiss" sound (some sort of auto gain control feature?) when recording to internal and external microphone.

Agree with this, the audio gain issue needs to be fixed. It's a significant problem with the camera for interview/doc work.

Another great to have feature. 2K Mode (2048x1080)

  9. As far as I know (and hopefully I'm wrong!), you can only shoot in 4K when using an external recorder.

I don't think using a Shogun with a NX1 makes a lot of sense since it records 4K internally, so all you gain is a really good monitor and you can skip the transcoding process, but I doubt it actually improves image quality. It would be nice to see an improved 1080p mode (less banding, no macroblocking etc) with a way faster workflow when using something like the Atomos Ninja Star though. That'd be a huge improvement. Andrew, would you mind hooking up your Nina Star (or any other 1080p recorder) to your NX1 and let us know if you can actually record 1080p externally?

Unfortunately I tried this, the camera does not do clean 1080p out, I'm hoping they fix this in a firmware update.

  10. After moving from m43 to the a7s I am still struggling to find a proper equivalent for my Voigtländer 25mm f0.95.

I dont care (yet) whether it is APS-C or Fullframe, so I am looking either for a 35mm or 50mm with at least f2, better f1.4. Minimum focus distance should be around 30cm and I prefer "real" focus instead of focus by wire (although i am open to it, if it works good). Pure awesomeness would be either setting the f-stops on the lens , compactness and/or IS, but this is optional. It would be also fine for me if it is a bit wider than 35 respectively 50mm, so sth like 28mm or 45mm would be also within my range.

    Candidates I already found:

    • Canon 35mm f2.0 IS
    • Olympus Pen F 38mm 1.9

Candidates i removed from my list:

    • Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f2 (minimum focus distance is only 45cm)
    • Summicron 35mm / 50mm f2 (minimum focus distance is only 70cm)

Any suggestions from you guys? What should i go for within the 50mm range, if i stick to fullframe?

Porst 55mm f1.2 can be adapted.

  11. Andrew, is it possible to rename this topic? Or create a separate topic about NX1 feedback?

    - proper manual focus mode on native Samsung lenses (they're fly-by-wire so they're not going to feel as good as lenses with a proper mechanical focus, but it must be possible to offer a linear focusing mode with a 90° or 180° focus throw!? As long as it allows for repeated focus pulls it's fine in my opinion and I know a lot of people who are hesitant to invest in Sony / Panasonic / Samsung lenses for video simply because of the non-repeatable focusing!)

Wow, THIS. Have a MF setting in the menu : AUTO [current implementation], 90, 180, 270, 360 settings. You could change the focus throw to suite your taste. I would not hesitate to buy samsung lenses for video if this was a feature.

  12. Okay Then:

    Hopefully possible

    - Clean 8-Bit 4:2:2 1080p output- Currently it only exports clean 4K, so we cannot use an external recorder with the excellent 1080p mode on the camera.

-Digital Punch in while filming/Adjustable in frame

-120 fps mode under the 1080 24p setting.

    - Exposure Compensation in Manual Mode - Exposure compensation that just adjusts the ISO, controlled on rear control dial, for heavily backlit scenes when shooting weddings/docs. Just have it adjust nothing if its not set to Auto-ISO

    - Ability to map Audio level to the control dials

-Digital Telephoto - Similar to ETC Mode on GH series, center crop of the sensor in 1080p.

-Ability to manually enter focal length so old lenses work with flashes

    Long Shots

    LOG

4K Anamorphic Mode - Center of Frame for 2X Anamorphics, would also hopefully help with rolling Shutter because it would not be downscaled.

6.5K Bursts at 24p (however long until the buffer maxes out)

240 fps 1080p Burst  (however long until the buffer maxes out)

Also if you can get a word in have them talk with Adobe about getting H265 working in Premiere Pro, they already bundle the camera with Lightroom, so they should have a dialog between them already.

  13. I have a contact, will collect this feedback on the thread and send it.

Hey Andrew, would love a Center Crop 4K mode on this camera.

Main problem for video at the moment for professionals is the Rolling Shutter in 4K mode (1080p is AMAZING). I'm assuming this is because of the way the image is being generated, 6.5K being down scaled in real time to 4K.

I think it would be great if we could have a mode that takes the center 4K off the sensor, avoiding the downscale and thus improving rolling shutter at the expense of a cropped image.

You'll still be able to have the current 4K video modes and their amazing image quality, but it would be great to have a mode like this when filming documentaries or fast action.
